Discussion: Shivan Lore
My characters at Virtueverse
Faces of the City
There's no lore here.
This is a description of one NPC's encounter with the new Shivans, with some fine details not supported by the game engine. The only nod to actual lore is the acknowledgment that these are different - somehow - from the Shivans we've been fighting and sometimes using as debuffers since CoV went live, six years and fifteen issues ago. Notably absent, both from this description and the in-game models, is any indication that the new Shivans incorporate human remains. |
Really looking forward to learning what makes these new Shivans tick--and who or what is driving them. With their seemingly new-found ability to absorb much heavier materials, I'm guessing this event--and other events going on around Paragon City--could make for a "perfect storm" on Paragon City and Primal Earth.
A great prelude to the events in Galaxy City, Beastyle. Reading this makes me want to add a natural origin PPD officer/hero to my roster. This story made me think of that new billboard under the monorail in Atlas Park, "Not all heroes wear capes."

Then this would (IMO) be the place to tell us that, rather than barely hinting at it while following a PPD Detective around the tutorial.

As for the "old" lore, it still fits - the only issue is the 1950's date, which I think is a straight up mistake. The idea of a planet devouring menace hitting the Arcosians (or whoever it was) hundreds of years ago, then moving on, fits with what's going on now. Maybe the initial Shiva was just a scouting meteor. Maybe it was broken up, but only some of the pieces fell into Bloody, and the rest were delayed until now.
The biggest issue for me is how one agent in SERAPH could have made the entire Paragon astronomical community miss the meteors. Surely there would have been amateur skygazers, or other companies/organizations watching the skies?
it has gone from unconscionable to downright appalling that we have no way of measuring our characters' wetness.

Let me say thank you for something that, honestly, I don't know if anybody but me cares: thank you for showing that non-powered heroes still matter in the City of Heroes and still make a difference.
Thank you also, by the way, for not filling it with standard disaster-porn: looters, rioters, etc. Disaster sociologists have known, ever since William James accidentally invented the field with his surprising first-hand scientific reporting from the scene, back during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake: human beings are better people than we give ourselves credit for. Major disasters have an odd way of turning everybody into heroes.
The monsters were upon him in a groaning mass of alien violence. He was surprised to find his punches actually seemed to be doing them some damage; but he could do little to fend off their raging blows. They surrounded him and after a last depserate punch, Ghaly closed his eyes and waited for the killing blow.
And then he opened them again. He was kneeling like that guy in Platoon (he'd secretly decided this was the way he'd go when the time came at an early age), yelling out his defiance, and the alien beasties were still pounding on him and dribbling unearthly drool over his trilby, but for some reason he wasn't dead. In fact, he realised as his death-roar petered out, he felt pretty damn good. He gingerly stood up. A gigantic blubbery alien standing right at his left elbow smashed a gelatinous arm at his; the girder embedded in it powered straight into Ghaly's face, and he winced in anticipation of a right pasting, but it just bounced off.
'Hm...this is weird', Ghaly thought as another of the monsters smashed a huge foot into his ghoolies to no apparent avail. Ghaly scratched his chin as another tried to bite his head off. He was perplexed. This was a turn up for the books, and no mistake! This was the first time an alien invasion had come to Paragon with 'invincibility for the puny humans' as a strategy.
A few educational minutes later, Ghaly was sauntering through Galaxy City, his guns safely back in his boot (no sense in wasting ammo), lamping Shivans left and right with casual backhanders and the odd uppercut. He found a hero collapsed on the floor, begging for help. He elbowed a villain who was pondering stealing the fallen hero's power out of the way. "Get up, you fool - you're invincible!" and carried on.
After some time, he found a giant pit in the ground. A tremendous roar emanated from it as a gargantuan alien fiend arose, roaring out its hate at the world. Ghaly skipped over to it and whipped out a fishing rod, pretended to fish in the pit, did a rain dance, then finally shpped out a newspaper and ignored everything. When he returned from his reverie, the beast and its useless brethren had been blown to bits by some passing jets, and shortly afterwards Ghaly felt a teleport kick in.
Ghaly found himself near a Longbow helicopter. Statesman was standing there, fretting about things, as he often does. Ghaly approached him. "Well, that was easy".
"Easy?" spluttered Statesman,"Those things look like a threat neér before seen by this world! How did you survive?"
Ghaly licked his lips nervously, then a sly smile spread over his face. "Oh yeah, right, yeah, ooh, nasty pieces of work those Shivans. Thought I was a gonner for sure. Really hard. Honest. That was a right hairy fight! Don't worry, though, Marcus, Big Shivan sorted out. All my own work, honest. Considering that was, er, worse than what I reckon the Alpha Squad went through, I'll have a medal, please. Two medals. And your house."
Statesman squinted at him, "I see you managed to keep your hat untouched during the fight..." he muttered.
"Got lucky" replied Ghaly quickly. "Epic fight, that" he added.
"Epic?" Statesman repeated, hopefully.
"Epic."
Staesman darted a look left and right, then leaned over conspiratorially. "OKay, I'll see what I can do about a house, but don't tell anyone, will you?"
Ghaly tapped his nose. ""Not a whisper, no worries".
'New house, eh?', thought Ghaly as he boarded the Heli. 'Epic'.

I feel the world would be better for more "Jonathan Ghaly: Two-Fisted Invincible Civilian Detective" stories. Bravo, MrCaptainMan!

"Together we shall rule Paragon City ignoring the broadcast spam leetness from the crapulous scrankblappers. Good luck fools." - raucity, speaking for Defenders who've had enough from the "plz h341 m3" crowd.
Well, I have to say that this:
"Now heroes and villains fight over the meteor shards, collecting samples as freelance agents to avoid direct conflict between Longbow and Arachnos that could touch off World War III."
has always been my favorite part about the official Shivan lore.
Nobody seems to be all that concerned about starting a global war these days...
