Hello all,

My wife has done a few videos reviewing some of the new 52 comics from DC. She is planning on doing 2 videos a week, one will be an overview and the other will be a detailed review of one of the comics. I will post new videos as she makes them. Feel free to leave comments here or on her videos.

Thanks and enjoy!

Good news! I have read the new Starfire and now my soul if filled with emotion again!

Bad news! Its raging hate and venom! Have you seen the new Starfire? Whoever thought that was a good idea needs to be sacked. Not joking.

What? But the new Starfire is the comic industry's perfect example of a strong, self-assertive woman. She fights well and has sex all the time. What other ingredients do you need for a strong female role model? Innocent waif, [censored]-bucket; to the comic industry it's all the same thing.

/sarcasm off.

Yeah, I'm with you. This comic is going to haunt DC, in the same way the 'women in refrigerators' meme does. It's super-misogynistic.

Star fire was my favorite DC character if somewhat underused. Her world view was with a touch of wonderment and innocence. Now? Uhg! Comics have cited for years "great jumping on point" but this was a great place for me to jump off. Goodbye DCU. I will remember the old content with fondness.

Oookay, I googled "new 52 starfire" to see what the fuss was about and ran into a page of Catwoman and Batman doing some public dry-humping.

If you're talking about the last page of the new Catwoman magazine, they weren't dry-humping. Batman's pants are down.

But that's only moderately misogynistic. Although the reader sees more of Catwoman's breasts than her face, she at least has a real job (as a thief) and some initiative of her own.

What they did to Starfire, on the other hand, is creepy and ugly and wrong. She's a sex doll with power blasts. And it's leading to eviscerations like this:

DC screwed up on a lot of their new 52, but this mistake is going to cost them. Badly.

And here's a 7 year old girl's take...

I actually think the problem people have with Catwoman is misplaced puritanical feelings because Catwoman and Batman WOULD do whats at the end of the issue and it introducing that aspect of the character to the reader. It's the one part of the comic where Catwoman acts like Catwoman. I think this is mainly puritanical ideas hitching on to the Starfire thing because none of the other problems with Catwoman's character is mentioned by comic readers... like caging cats, not inflicting wrath on those who blew up her place, and possibly killing someone in cold blood. All things outside of her character. Especially when you consider that in her book she has sex with Bats, that Detective guy, and his son with various levels of exposure.

I hate defending that, BUT it should be differentiated from Starfire's case where she was stripped of all personality and such all together and turned into a virtual sex doll.

And a much better argument would be of all the female characters that star or are major characters in their book how many show up naked or in their underwear or have sex or has been dressed as a **** now?

Of course this can be part of a much better argument still and apply it to all or most of the characters...

The problem with the Catwoman comic isn't that she has sex, but the last four pages of it attempts to be a cliffhanger "Will Selina Kyle have sex with Batman?" (Hint: Yes)

As an introduction to the character, I expect the first issue to really set up what defines them. Seemingly what defines Catwoman is she gets to have weird sex with Batman, despite Batman not even appearing to want it all that much.

This is problematic on an awful lot of levels.

Also I am enjoying the reviews! Just in case you're wondering if anyone is actually watching them in this thread I like how you end them with some nice shots from the books which a lot of reviews so far have left out, which seems crazy to me. The use of the mic has made the voice a lot cleaner as it's gone on and subatomiclaura seems a lot more confident and relaxed. Keep it up!

Tell her that if she likes Batwoman she should pick up Batwoman 0 and Elegy

and Batman does use sculpted armor as well as being extremely fit
