Time to Reminisce - A look back at City of Heroes

Since the City of Heroes we've all "grown up with" has evolved, with help of Archive.org, it's time to take a look back and reminisce about the good ole days.

CoH.com - version 1

CoH.com - version 2

CityOfVillains.com - version1

CityOfVillains.com - version 2

CityOfVillains.com - version 3

(Note: If you get stuck on a loading page, click on "Impatient?" on the bottom, right hand of the page. Archive.org may capture a date, but it doesn't always pull the corect info for that date. So you may be seeing a capture of a May, 2005 site but has the information for a Dec. 2005 version.)

I dunno. It's fun for me to go back and view old articles, check out the old pre-beta forums (in a limited capacity), and reminisce about all the things that drew me to the game.

So how about you? Feel free to share anything about the good ole days. We're about to embark on a new journey so we should keep our own archive for the future generations of CoH players. With luck, many of the people we're met on our travels will be with us once again.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

And we had villian groups called Fear Factor and Killing Crew in the works back then? lol wonder who they became? Skuls? Hellions?

Didn't the Killing Crew become Malta?

Killing Crew I THINK became Freakshow and Fear Factor become the Carnival of Shadows...though I'm certainly not 100% on that.

I've heard the Soul Stealers became the Carnies.

The "never made it" villain group that always interested me were the Seraphim. Offhand, none of the factions that made it into the game seem to fit the mould of that name.

I also find the original approach to origins (e.g., some got fewer powers and more slots than other origins) interesting, though I was never clear at the time on why that'd be so, thematically speaking.

The Wayback machine, like Wikipedia and TV Tropes, is one of the web's big sand traps. I don't dare spend more time there, fascinating as it is. Thanks for the links!

I thought Killing Crew became the Sky Raiders and Fear Factor became Malta?

Thank you, Champion.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cryptic Studios Announces Massively Multiplayer
Online Role-Playing Game, "City of Heroes"

Comic-Book Style Adventure Filled with Superheroes and
Fearsome Villains to Release in Summer of 2002

San Jose, CA - September 26, 2001 - Cryptic Studios proudly announces "City of Heroes," a massively multiplayer online world home to an entire universe of super-powered, comic book style adventure. When the game releases next summer, thousands of players can take on the roles of superheroes, fight villains, and help create the story in a stunning, 3D graphical world, courtesy of the San Jose-based developer.

Super Powered Action and Adventure

City of Heroes is the first superhero themed online RPG and will offer a host of exciting and compelling gameplay features. Players create their own heroes, choosing from hundreds of different powers, skills, abilities, and items and design their own unique costumes. Then they can band together with other players to fight evil, build their own secret headquarters and strive to become the premiere hero group in the city.

Gamers will confront super villains, aliens, madmen, monsters, criminals, and other fearsome foes. They can take on personalized missions and rid the city of dozens of different evil organizations and hundreds of individual enemies. With success players acquire power, wealth, and fame and come to bask in the spotlight and rake in the rewards as their powers and fame grow with each successful mission and every defeated foe.

City of Heroes takes place amongst the skyscrapers, slums, sewers and streets of Paragon City, a sprawling online metropolis that offers unlimited adventure and countless surprises. Players become an integral part of many and varied different ongoing story arcs as the villain groups menace Paragon City and react to player victories and defeats.

"With City of Heroes we're bringing a new and exciting genre to online gaming: the world of superheroes," says lead designer Richard Dakan. "We've designed this game to not only capture the excitement of comic book heroes but to offer a unique gaming experience. With this game you can literally 'become your own hero.' Players can not only design their very own superheroes from the ground up, but they can have a direct impact on what happens to the city they live in."

Cryptic Studios plans to release City of Heroes in the summer of 2002. For a gameplay movie, screenshots, and additional game information check out the City of Heroes Web site at www.CityofHeroes.com.

*points down to guides*

Bit of discussion there - in the guide to the old COH E3 trailer (which, apparently, no longer exists at that location as a video.) Including the old groups.

Speaking of videos from the early days: E3 2002 demo video

  • It's narrated by Jack Emmert. He refers to "Rick" controlling the character. I wonder if it was Rick Dakan, the original lead developer and author of the Blue King comics.
  • Where's my statue? And my money?
  • It's funny to see the character going down all of those stairs and two sets of doors just to leave the hospital.
  • Check out that UI. I realize it was an alpha or pre-alpha build, but whew, I'm sure glad they overhauled it.

"Nobody really cares about the name, they just want to put on a suit and fight evil," says Emmert, who worked his way through grad school writing role-playing games and taught classics at Ohio State.

lmao, classic.
