Graphics card

What is a good and not too expensive graphics card that runs City well, and without lag during a mothership raid?

ATI 6870 $175

It really is a great card if you have a PCI-E slot.

I can run almost everything at high except Anti-aliasing (I run at 4x) and Occulsion (I turn off) running at 1280x1024.

I also turn off bloom and depth of field (I just don't like how they look).

Side note: Some people have issues with ATI's current (11.8) drivers, but the 11.4 drivers seem pretty stable.

I think in order to ensure the best card for you, I think it would be good if we knew your operating system, how much memory you currently have and what type Motherboard and cpu you have.

The reason I say this is because the suggested video card might be great - for that system but may not fit on your board. Or, it may fit, but with Windows 7 and 2gigs of RAM, that's not going to be very much RAM for Win 7 and CoH to share.

A lot of this actually depends on your underlying system.

If you're running an i7 2600K with 16GB of RAM, you'd get one answer.

If you're running an early Core2Duo with 2GB of RAM, you'd get another.

If you're running a P4 2.8Ghz with 1GB of RAM, we'd tell you to upgrade your base system first.

Hit the "HELP ME!" link in my sig and run CoH Helper as directed there. Paste it back in here.
If your system's a pre-built from a major manufacturer, give us the manufacturer and the model number.

Additionally what kind of budget are you running on (real dollar amounts please). This also helps would-be assistants in homing in on the best bang for the buck for you.

Are you really running a HD 6800 series card?

If so, there aren't a lot of cards out there that are better.

Source

That chart is a bit outdated, but it shows that depending on which card you are actually running (6850/6870) you probably won't really notice an upgrade unless you go super high end.

disabling "depth of field" and "ambient occlusion" will improve your frame rate noticably.

Mothership Raids will always get a bit choppy at *some point* or another, just due to the stupid number of effects that go off, and having both of those enabled isnt going to help the situation much.

The thing that weirds me out is the amount of memory. Most of the 6800 series are 1GB or higher.

So why's he showing 743MB?

Something ain't right there.

Agree. GPU-Z might help here.

sounds like its integrated graphics or a laptop spec card which would be reliant on system memory as opposed to that on the card itself

Mind of Gaia lvl 50 Defiant's first Mind/Storm 'troller.
Deadly Doc 50 Dark/Dark Corr
and lots more on Pinnacle,Union and Defiant

This is morelikely due a fault in DXdiag/COH Helper. I gues COH Helper gets the info from the DX Diag option, where the memory is displayed that is set available to DirectX/D3D/DX and cant really handle cards with greater then 1GB memory.

GPU-Z should give the proper (installed) memory.

(if you have a 2GB version, such as the 4870 or 5870 Vapors, it even shows only 1GB from dxdiag).
