Actually, "/ignore <character or global name>" globally ignores the player in question and provides a system message with their global name. You don't need to note them first.

Edit:
I was just listing the ways you can find someone's global name.

The other hero MMO didn't have reserved names. It was one of the things I hated about it. I want to play a hero not an email address.

No, you're called "new jan" or "fake jan" (hello, Geri Reischl), or "brunette jan" or "male jan" or "jan x" (first initial of last name) etc etc, all of which are different names for purposes of CoH.

Because I don't want my Dual Blades/Ninjitsu stalker to be named "Major Decoy"

Let's see. At the hobby store where we got together and played games we had several guys named John. There was the owner John, Big John, J3 (can you guess why?), John W, Jonathan, Plus One (another John that always added a +1 to all his die rolls), and Hardcore (a nickname for another John)

So yeah we called people different names even tho they all shared the same name.

When I go to work, I have about 150 co-workers. Of those 150, only 1 other person shares my name, and they work a different shift than me, so there's no confusion there. However, with CoH which has over 100,000 subscribers, even spread out over the 16 servers(Though I play on Virtue, one of the more populated ones) we're dealing with thousands. As the resent stress test they did on Freedom with the Praetorian invasion, we know the servers can handle(Though lag) more than 4000 IIRC at one time. Of those possible 4000, there could easily be hundreds of people all named Jane, or John, or Sam, or Chris, or Ashley.

But probably only thirteen named Henk.

Chiming in here;
At my job we had 4 or 5 guys named Mike.
We referred to them as such;
Michael
[Last name of one Mike]
[Middle name of one Mike]
Mike on Maintenance

So yeah, your alias DOES change if others have the same name. otherwise you have annoying crap like:
"Mike please come to the office"
Here, all 4 have to go because you don't differentiate.
