Old game codes

I am seeing older versions of CoH all over the "internetz" for a lower price than a one month subscription. The sites I am seeing them on say they are new sealed games. Does this mean I can buy these older game versions for a cheaper price and use the free 1 month code to play the game? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

You can only use them if you don't already have that edition unlocked on your account. For example you can't use two CoV codes on the same account, but your account can have 1 code from each

CoH edition
CoH collectors edition
CoV edition
Good vs Evil edition
Mac edition
Architect edition
Going Rogue edition

I just checked my account and found a place that actually shows all of the codes I've used. This is what it said:

Retail Jun 25, 2004 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-ZCRR
Retail Mar 25, 2006 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-YK5V
City of Heroes® Good Versus Evil Special In-Game Item Pack Apr 16, 2008 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-FTN7
Retail May 9, 2010 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-252N
Perk May 13, 2010 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-E66F
Retail Sep 4, 2010 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-P9B5
DVD Nov 13, 2010 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-34HG

Based on this it looks like I probably CAN and have done this in the past but didn't realize it. Any time I am in Gamestop or Big Lots (of all places, they sell sell this game for 7 bucks!) I pick one up. I am guessing if it is a SEALED NEW game from online, it wouldn't be any different than buying one on sale in store. Does anyone else have any input/experience on this?

I don't mean to argue what was just given as a response to my OP, I just got curious and checked my account and found the above. So does that REALLY mean I can't use the same type of code?

But yes, they work. I just started a family account with going rogue+4 months for $40. (This includes the 'complete edition' going rogue goodies, architect edition, and the pocket D/good vs. evil add-ons.

For secondary/third/fourth purchases, I have no idea. as the original can be bought for $2, they might avoid this.

As Forbin stated. In addition....there was a CoV collector's edition.

If you find a sealed copy of the Mission Architect Edition, that code allows you to also select either the cyborg pack or magic pack for free.

The Mac Edition includes the Valkyrie Costume set and mission transporter..

The Good Versus Evil Edition includes the Sinister and Justice costume sets, plus pocked d transporter, and jump pack.

The CoH collector's edition has the cape of the 4 winds and prestige power slide power.

The CoV collector's edition has the arachnos symbol.

The pre-orders don't give any time and the items are available as vet rewards now.

It would be nice if instead of the word retail they listed what edition the code was for. Then we could easily see what we did or didn't have.

It can be very irritating to buy a cheap good vs evil for example, only to find out you already unlocked that edition and the code is useless to you.

The comments with the codes aren't necessarily consistent.

I see what you all are saying. Just because it says "Retail" doesn't mean it was the original retail box every time. So maybe once I bought the original box, once the villains box, once the AE edition box, etc.

I am almost positive I have purchased the original retail one more than once. I think I am going to pull the trigger on one of these and be the guinea pig. I have a buddy getting into the game at the moment, he is on a trial account so even if the code doesn't work for me I will just give it to him and I know that will work for him.

I will keep you posted!

The above is no longer true; some boxes now lock out other boxes. The specific case I'm sure of is that the original CoH edition, and the Good vs. Evil edition, *cannot* currently be applied to the same account; whichever is used first will lock out the other one. (I tried this both ways around while getting some friends set up less than a month ago.)

Those are almost always pre-owned and opened. They typically say "played once". That means the code has been used, and they are no good for you. I wouldn't buy one.

All they do is save you the initial download.

If you buy from legit sellers, listed as "new" the code is still good. T'was for me.
They do not save on the initial download, though, as it installs a 7 year old version of the game.

Personally I take precautions one step further and look for the words factory sealed.

But why bother loading the old disc. Just download the most current version from here.

The only reason to bother is if you can actually get a month for a buck or two. But good point on the 'sealed' detail, and agreed on the download.

I have bought several sealed basic "City of Heroes" boxes on Amazon for $1.04 to give to buddies to get premium status before Freedom strikes.

These DO NOT work if you already have a COH account. ( I tried) They do not give you a free month, nor can you apply them to an existing account.

They are however, a fantastic introduction to give a friend, and will give them "paid at least once" status when it all goes F2P.

I did this when I first started. It was a great way to pick up the add on powers and costumes as well as get a month cheap. I learned the 'one time to the well only' part the hard way though, the first time I tried to use a code for a version I had already added.

But when my wife showed interest, that sucked up most of the extra boxes on our 2nd account.

The rest of the boxes (I only had 6 left-overs after 2nd account) now go to friends to help them start.

I keep a simple written list that shows each perk or box added, so I know what happened on each account. I keep it inside the master box for that account (ie: the box that started the account.)

Overall it only saved me a few dollars but every little bit helps.

Jak

I believe that the CoH: Collector's Ed and CoV: collector's Ed now lock each other out as well.

They can't. Any edition whose retail code offers unique ingame items can't be locked out by another edition.

You can't use two of the same box (City of Heroes basic and City of Heroes basic don't stack).

You need to use the basic version before a deluxe or combo version (Hero basic THEN Hero Collector's).

You need to use GvE AFTER Hero basic and Villains basic. GvE used before the basic versions will lock out the basic versions. It used to not be this way, but my second account cannot use the Hero basic and Villain basic boxes I have sitting on my desk, I'm guessing because I started it with GvE (because I haven't applied any other retail keys to that account).

The rest of the boxes (or releases, since there's a couple online-only releases (Mac edition, GR upgrade version) - Architect, Mac Edition, Going Rogue) can be used anytime and don't lock anything else out.

The Game Cards (not game time cards....Game Card) can be used at any time, AND can be used multiple times on one account. It's basically a 30 day time card that can also be used to start an account (and comes with a 30-real-days jetpack).
