Let me know if there's anything I can improve on. I'm really trying to stay away from costly purples, etc. Thanks!

    */WP, BA or DB

I have been trying to figure out what to pair with WP on a new Brute. I have played DB and BA both very little, (lvl 10-ish) but I have heard that both sets complement Willpower very well. So which set would you recommend based on damage output, playability, survivability and overall fun? Thanks.

Use version 11.4 drivers - 11.8 keeps hard locking the game.
This is interesting. I am no where near those frames per second. I am going to post my screenshot of me in atlas with my settings when I get home. Maybe you can switch to the same settings and let me know how it goes.

One other thing, what resolution are you running at?

Most other settings either max'd out or at high. Mostly tuned for how I like it to look. I have zero issues with graphics lag and if I do a quick hit of the F1 key (I /bind F1 "unloadgfx") smooths it out!

I run at 50-60 in world and 100+ in missions.
    Specs?

Also, did you have vertical sync (vsync) in the game options enabled?
What GPU utilization tool would you recommend I use?

Also I had vsync both disabled and enabled. I did this from both in-game and through Nvidia Control Panel and Catalyst control center.

The Phenom II x4 is about equal (the lower end ones) to a Q6600. Scary but AMD has been really lagging behind Intel and that Q6600 turned out to be a real gem. I still have an E6600 C2D that is still alive and kicking but I see how weak it is compared to a Sandy Bridge 2500K.

Hoping that AMD's Bulldozer is good. Llano is certainly welcome news for laptop gamers though.
I really hope your right because if this is true I should at least be getting 40fps with all of my settings maxed. Can you post a screenshot of your sliders ingame and your fps in the top right corner? Thanks!

If anyone else could do the same, this would be very helpful to compare real results. Sometimes the people I have spoken to say they have their settings maxed but when I look at their actual settings, they arent. (One person in game said they were averaging 50fps with a 6870 and a dual core CPU, but when I saw their settings they were running minimum ultra mode at 1280x768.)

I tested the cards with triple buffering both enabled and disabled. Neither setting affected fps more than +2-3 fps
  8. Honestly I spent almost 8 hours on it yesterday, trying different settings and options, versions of drivers, anything I could think of. This was both in Catalyst and in-game. I ended up testing 3 different cards last night: my new 6870, my old GTX260, and my brothers 6970.

First I tried my GTX260 and found a happy medium of "max" settings and playable fps. I was getting 28-31 frames per second doing my "fly around Atlas" benchmark.

So I decided to try the 6870, and at the same settings (not even raising my graphics options a little bit) I was getting 30-33 fps. When I tried to turn up my options (AAO to medium, and world detail to 200%) my frames would drop to around 20 fps.

I reverted back to the exact same settings I had with my GTX260, uninstalled the 6870, installed the 6970 and tried again. Doing the same test, I was achieving 33-38 fps at the same settings.

Finally I tried the same cards in a friends PC with different specs (Phenom II x4, 4GB DDR3) and ran the same tests, all ending up at almost exactly the same results (with a variation of only ~1-2 fps per card.

I have concluded that the game is just NOT optimized to run Ultra mode at max settings (I mean REAL MAX, not just close) and keep a playable framerate. Keep in mind I wasn't in the middle of a large team like a Rikti raid or walking through RWZ during prime BAF/Lambda hours. Aside from purchasing a GTX580 and benchmarking this game just to prove whether THAT can do it, I feel like I have fairly decent comparison and benchmark of 3 cards, and feel convinced that an upgrade from a GTX260 at this point in time, is not worth it.
  9. I'm confused as to how some people are running this game "maxed" with something like a 5850. I have a q6600 OCd to 3.2ghz, 4gb RAM and a Radeon HD6870 and I am only getting ~20 fps "MAXED" (Ultra Mode, 1920x1080, AAO, Shadows, Reflections, Water, AA, World Quality, all max)

    So what's the deal?
  10. Well I got the card installed yesterday, and with no driver issues at all, I was able to play CoH. However, I was very disappointed to see less than a 10% increase in FPS over my GTX260 at the same settings!

I was pretty shocked to see this, as I was hoping for at least going from 20-25 frames to 30-35 frames. My GTX260 runs with everything maxed (1920x1080) except for world detail (120%) and AAO (off) and when flying around Atlas Park I get about 30 fps. With the 6870 at the same settings I am getting MAYBE 35. And when I turn world detail up to 150% and AAO to slight, my frames drop to 25ish. When I took the 6870 into Grandville, my fps tanked (15-18 fps).

I am beginning to think it is IMPOSSIBLE to run this game at 1920x1080 with everything maxed. Is there anyone out there with a q6600 and a better video card that can tell me what you are getting fps-wise? I'm tempted to order a 580 on my BestBuy credit card just to install it and run CoH to see if THAT can do it!
  11. Thanks for all the advice so far folks. I was hoping to get a 6950 but I really wanted to spend less than $150. I pulled that off with a deal for a 6870 at $140. It should be coming in next week, and I am looking forward to it!

    I am running an Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @3.2ghz with 4GB of Patriot Extreme DDR3 RAM, and a 7200 RPM 500GB Seagate HDD.

Also editing my OP to include the info.
  13. I am getting ready to be in the same boat as you, as I have a new 6800 series card on the way. But check all the threads on catalyst drivers. I'd start there for info on what is causing your problems. That would be my guess at least.
  14. I currently have an Nvidia GTX 260 core 192, 896MB but yesterday was able to land a pretty good deal on a Radeon HD6870 1GB. What sort of performance increase do you think I will see with this new card? Is there anyone else on here who can tell me their experience with a 6870? I know I will be playing driver roulette for the first few days until I find a stable series, but I am ready for it.

So can anyone tell me what they are getting FPS-wise with a 6870? I currently am running at 1920x1080 with ultra settings "mostly" maxed (low FA, AA and Shadows, 115% world and character detail), but I am hoping this card will put me over the top. Thanks.

My other system specs are a Q6600 @3.2ghz, 4GB Patriot Extreme RAM, and 500GB Seagate 7200 RPM HDD.
  15. Funny you should bring this up, the stacking of Phalanx Fighting and Grant Cover are the exact reason my buddy and I are level pacting to 50 with DM/SD scrappers. We might be interested in joining up every now and then.
  16. I might have to ask this in a separate thread but how is caltrops for scrappers? I like the thought of having 2 scrappers throw down caltrops on an AV, keeping a constant -hp going all the time? I haven't seen much talk about caltrops on the scrapper forums, so I think I may be missing something.

I am really thinking we might use both builds and build each one out differently. One with Pyre or Mu for x8 missions and another for AV fights.
  17. My buddy and I are rolling 2 Dark Melee/Shield scrappers, and I am hoping to be able to use this duo as an AV hunting tandem. Do you think this will be a possibility? What kind of other uses should we expect to be able to run with this duo? And finally, what epic pools would you recommend for this duo?

So far we are at level 15 and are pretty happy with how it's going. I am looking forward to when we can take advantage of Phalanx Fighting and Grant Cover to boost our defenses. Any other advice is appreciated. Thanks.
  18. Same problem. No fixes/workarounds yet?
  19. My friend and I are wanting to make a duo of DM/SD toons, but I am not sure if we should go with Brutes or Scrappers. I am leaning toward scrappers, any advice?

    Old game codes

I see what you all are saying. Just because it says "Retail" doesn't mean it was the original retail box every time. So maybe once I bought the original box, once the villains box, once the AE edition box, etc.

I am almost positive I have purchased the original retail one more than once. I think I am going to pull the trigger on one of these and be the guinea pig. I have a buddy getting into the game at the moment, he is on a trial account so even if the code doesn't work for me I will just give it to him and I know that will work for him.

    I will keep you posted!

    Old game codes

I just checked my account and found a place that actually shows all of the codes I've used. This is what it said:

    Retail Jun 25, 2004 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-ZCRR
    Retail Mar 25, 2006 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-YK5V
City of Heroes® Good Versus Evil Special In-Game Item Pack Apr 16, 2008 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-FTN7
    Retail May 9, 2010 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-252N
    Perk May 13, 2010 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-E66F
    Retail Sep 4, 2010 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-P9B5
    DVD Nov 13, 2010 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-34HG

Based on this it looks like I probably CAN and have done this in the past but didn't realize it. Any time I am in Gamestop or Big Lots (of all places, they sell sell this game for 7 bucks!) I pick one up. I am guessing if it is a SEALED NEW game from online, it wouldn't be any different than buying one on sale in store. Does anyone else have any input/experience on this?

I don't mean to argue what was just given as a response to my OP, I just got curious and checked my account and found the above. So does that REALLY mean I can't use the same type of code?
  22. Strike_Hawk

    Old game codes

I am seeing older versions of CoH all over the "internetz" for a lower price than a one month subscription. The sites I am seeing them on say they are new sealed games. Does this mean I can buy these older game versions for a cheaper price and use the free 1 month code to play the game? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
  23. I have a build I have been working on, and I feel like it is good but not great. I am not set on the epic pool or the fighting pool. I have been playing melee toons for so long that I feel like this build just isn't clicking. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

    SLI or new card?

If you can get $80 for your 260, I would sell it and upgrade to something else. Unless you have to push a lot of pixels to your monitor, you are going to reach a point of diminishing returns, and sli might be too much. Those Q6600 cpus are stalwarts (i have one!), but at a certain point you're not going to see a lot of direct improvement.

I'd personally go with a 460 or 5850 in the $150 or less range.
I am running CoX on a 24" LCD monitor at 1920x1080.

Also, I thought SLI had been functional now. I just found someone in my area willing to sell a GTX295 for only about $50 more than I can sell my 260. Is this card functional now, or are there still driver and SLI issues?
  25. Have the driver issues been fixed? I have had the opportunity to purchase one for a great price, and it would stand to be a substantial upgrade over my GTX260. So what's up with this card, is it fully functional now, or are the issues with CoX still alive? Thanks.
