Things As A New Player...

I think the very instanced nature of the maps and communication - meaning people using and a certain global channel and rarely using others - is going to be a BIG problem, as it's one I have to deal with a lot and I'm a vet. My anecdotal evidence (or perhaps evidence of confirmation bias? ) is that I see a lot of posts here on the forums that say things like:

"I'm on a trial account and this game seems dead, am I missing something?"

or

"I'm a returning player from three years ago and the game seems dead today (etc.)"

If they're one of the players who don't come to these forums, then they're likely to not find out about global channels at all. Players who only use the not-so-clear-itself player search box won't do so well if they play on a low-pop server or at off-hours.

I think if the devs are smart (and they may be ), they really need to look at the way this game separates people and find ways around it.

Like most matured MMOs, I think the biggest hurdle will be the math.

There's so much number crunching in this game and not all of it is intuitive. But like I said, this happens to MMOs as they age.

In my opinion they should be identical even if they all seem extremely obvious to me NOW I still remember when they weren't at all obvious.
Oh, consistency isn't the worst problem with enhancement names. Try shopping for tech origin enhancements sometime.

You know, whenever I see those posts (of new or returning players, who we then direct towards global channels), I think that just maybe the devs should make a server-specific LFT channel.
Despite the idea that it could/would turn into a spamming mess... It may just be worth implementing.

Now, I don't want to dispute people's ideas for this thread, but I just don't see this in CoH.
You can pick any AT, any powerset combo and just about any powers and have a super (yes, "super!") time playing through this game.
Just because we can number crunch and look under the hood, doesn't mean that anyone has to.

Just my thoughts on that. I just see this game as an I don't want to think about the numbers friendly game.
I know that I've enjoyed it that way most of my time here.

For me WASD for movement and mouselook goes waaaaay back to DOOM. Or perhals it was DOOM2...
No....Definately DOOM. Wolfenstein was my first fps and it had a different way to turn I think.

Anyways, every other MMO that I have tried that has A and D as turning gets changed to strafing as pretty much the first thing I do with a character.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Dragon Age 2 and it really wound me up because I'd just come back to playing CoX and was switching between them frequently so I had a 10-15 minute period of adjustment every time I started one of them up.

YES! So very much this. Both Broadcast and request are entirely and completely useless as they're only limited to the zone you're in. Irrespective of how many zones there are, most people are inside instances and don't see that. Pretty much the only channel in my Broadcast tab (Broadcast, Request and Help) that gets any use at all is Help, because all people on the server see that, and there's almost always someone who saw the question, knew the answer and cared to explain it. Lots and lots of people both find teams and socialise over global channels, but a lot of those global channels are mostly used to find teams and organise events. As such, for most intents and purposes, they may as well be server-specific channels.

Personally, I would love to see a new, server-wide broadcast channel that doesn't have the stigma of ******** like Arena does or the very specific use of Help. I wouldn't even restrict it to just LFT. Just call it general server broadcast or some such and leave it as a mass communication tool for the people. Free accounts NEED a channel like this. I remember the dark days before global chat, and if you think I don't team now...

While I agree that you can pretty much play anything just on instinct and intuition, a lot of the times this doesn't make for as fun a game as you might think. I think I have a good overview of this, as I spent over six years of City of Heroes refusing to take Stamina, and while the game was well playable and indeed kind of fun, my characters were always sub par and underperforming. The difference between those days and the time when I got Stamina for free is like the difference between light and day.

Sure, you don't HAVE to make strong builds, but the game is many, many times less frustrating when you do, and that's kind of the problem.

Oh, that, right. Yeah, I remapped those keys so fast I didn't remember they were ever otherwise

I could see that being helpful, especially if it could be redside/blueside specific as well.

If I were gonna toss some pie in the sky, I'd just hope they'd limit the number of possible global channels period and make them all dev-defined topics - fewer channels means more players talking in one place. Maybe they could come up with a set number of channels: "Task Force", "AE", "Villain", Mission Teams" for example, none of this checking the forums, checking the lists in-game to try and find out where people are actually talking or with channels having to split due to too much interest. Global channels should be bringing us together, not acting as another wall between us.

But I know this isn't a popular opinion and they won't take something away from us now that we have it.

Ah, I was there when Quake went WASD. One of the developers released their own keyboard config that used "Mouselook"! $Diety that was hard going from arrow keys to mouse, but even harder going back

Same here. Always hated the MMOs that decided to do it differently just for the sake of it, and really dislike that that's now apparently become the default for new MMOs.

I especially hate when they have A & D change function depending whether you're mouselooking at the time - strafe if you have right button held down, but turn if you don't (or is it the other way around?). Pick one and stick to it!

Tell me about it. And I had the sad misfortune of playing an MMO once which did not allow you to strafe at all. What the hell?

I remember couple of times when new (trial) players asked me how to start a team with their trial friends.

Ofc in the end I formed the team for them. lol
