Something witty and profound

Well, I WAS in line to ask the question about the Passport badge for those of you who were interested, but they cut off questions two guys ahead of me.

I cornered Posi real quick as everyone was clearing out and asked him three quick questions:
1) Are you still planning to repurpose Passport? (Yes, but not in i21.)
2) Are you still planning to make anniversary badges global? (Yes; it turns out there was some difficulty in getting existing badges to go global. This will also probably not happen in i21, but in our brief chat I got the impression that they figured out a work around.)
3) Will we get access to the Praetorian content in Ouroboros? (Yes, eventually; not in i21.)

If there's anything that people want me to ask during the rest of the show, let me know and I'll try to find out for you.

FYI, they've said that questions about PVP, SG Bases and Mission Architect will not be answered this weekend--they know the player interest is there, but there is nothing they can talk about at this time.

Figured it would be pretty duck and cover for those three topics which is why I didn't bother when this thread was started. Reposting these from the other thread since most of these can be confirmed simply by playing their setup as opposed to asking a question.

  • I see comments on Atlas...any impressions of Mercy? I know it's been stated that it's a far smaller overhaul but still curious.
  • With Mercy being adjusted, where is the new starting point? Rough guess I'd assume either the clock tower of some generic bunker.
  • Are Kalinda and Burke still around in Mercy or is it just one contact now? Or more perhaps?
  • Who are the contacts for Atlas? Is it just the same 5? Mix and match between Atlas and Galaxy contacts?
  • Has the AE building been removed from the new Atlas Park? While I like AE, the current farm culture will leave a bad impression on any newcomers, especially since they'll have no choice to avoid it with Galaxy's destruction. Plus, people who want it that bad can easily reach Kings Row.
  • With this new sewer trial being added and supposedly replacing the Sewer Network, does this mean that the Abandoned Sewer Trial has been discontinued?

Regardless if you think stuff like this should cost extra virtual points anyway.....by making them have a cost, should they be "better" than other sets?

What if they out right "suck"; would there be "more" backlash than usual? Will they get more attention to "fix" than other sets that still have not-so-desirable/lacking features?

Are they going to be open to try on Test for everyone? Do non-VIPs get test server access?

Note the "'s and apply accordingly. My vote is for pie and I'm still firmly in the realm of "meh"

Definitely.

Time Manipulation, which is free, seems to be a straightforward buff/debuff set, while Beam Rifle, which is not, has a special debuff mechanic that makes subsequent beam attacks better AND IT'S A FREAKIN' BEAM RIFLE! Street Justice is a set people have been clamoring for for ages, and it also has a new Combo mechanic that has FINISHING MOVES.

For-pay sets will have to be better, or there will be complaints. I don't know how this might impact existing sets.

Ask about:

Will we get new hairstyles added alone to the Paragon Store?

Its a turn off option for FX like travel powers on the works already?

We going to get Pool, Epics Archetypes and APP & PPP customization?

Are all the costume pack costumes "better" than all the other costume pieces that are available in-game without actual additional cost?

I was really hoping they weren't going to go that route. The additional power sets were a little surprising to hear about in the first place.

Still want a bow staff set and swords that shoot frickin' lasers. The mace beam is about the closest thing already in-game; I want Katana to do something special Or dual blades to cross together and shoot a fancy obliteration beam knocking all in front of me out of the way.

Now you're getting philosophical. Obviously, the devs want VIPs to desire the new Premium sets so much that they would be willing to pay real monies for them. I think the carrots they will use are interesting mechanics, cool power animations, and long desired sets (like staves, for example).

Powers that don't meet these criteria will be for free.

I think we're in for a tidal wave of new Premium sets. If one is willing to pay, you'll be able to drown yourself in alts. (See what I did there? ).

I don't think they should use the term "Premium" for this. "Premium" is used to refer to a category of player once Freedom comes out. And it's confusing to use the term for something else.

If VIP's don't get it included as part of their subscription, then it's shouldn't be called Premium. Maybe "Purchasable?"

I'm also a little miffed that these are for pay. I realize that VIP's get points and can buy these with points, but still, if it's not part of a paid expansion, like CoV or GR, then I don't like seeing powersets that aren't automatically included in your $15/month subscription.

Dual Pistols feels kind of lackluster to me and I've been kind of done with masterminds for a while, so Demon Summoning, while a very good MM set, I don't know that I would have paid money for either if they weren't part of GR.

Creating purchasable sets with average performance is probably the best way to introduce them - not only do you avoid the pay-to-win scenario (and the resulting negative fallout), you give players a way to play a new set that appeals thematically without relegating older characters to the trophy shelf.

Case in point, even if Dual Pistols hadn't been bundled with Going Rogue and was instead sold separately, I'm sure it would have seen plenty of sales despite its middling performance because it nails the natural hero, damage-debuff, and flamboyant-breakdance-fighting-anime-nerd demographics.

I'm not really keen on new powersets being gated, either. I could see locking it behind some points if you still wanted to access it if you were ever in Premium, but it kind of feels like a bad precedent for what they are going to lock behind points.

I suppose some could say that now you can pay what you want to pay for with these (I wouldn't haven't bought GR or used PP for demon summoning, for instance). The past few years show that more stuff ends up in for pay packs than in the "paid for by subscribers 'free' expansions," (at least for costumes) so I fear this is how things will be with Freedom.

I'll keep waiting and seeing how it works, though. Hopefully things will stay good and they won't gate too much stuff behind points.

Other posters have said this, and I kind of have the sinking feeling (when I give into the DOOM!) they are right: the devs are going to release things like powersets that have to be purchased with points, in order to make subscribers soak up their points more quickly and want to pay more money. On the one hand, it sounds like a sound fiscal strategy. On the other, it makes me feel like I'd be getting less for being a VIP (and if you're like me, it's hard enough to justify a subscription at times, let alone even more money for the game).

If I don't give in to the DOOM!, however, I think that it's just a good way for us to get what we want and leave on the shelf what we don't want. I'm pretty sure there was stuff in the science and mutant pack that I'd want a la carte, but I don't want the whole thing, for instance.

We'll see how it all plays out, but I still would rather not see powersets on the "purchased by points for all" block.

My real concern after all this will be, what will we start getting in our free expansions now? That is, things that are actually free?
Will they just remove *all* of the cosmetics/sets/New ATs and put them in the store and only throw new content, QoL and revamping old content in following issues? It's too soon for me to honestly have an opinion on the whole thing. I need to see the long-term effects first.
I do have really high hopes for the game, though. If they don't market the hell out of this (effectively CoH2), then d00m on them.

Well, it's good to keep in mind how much stuff is coming with I21 for VIP types, free of extra points purchases. I just let my DOOM! get powerful when I hear about new powersets being locked behind purchases. I really don't think it's a good idea... they're even commenting about how great they tried to make the new sets since they're for purchase. Does that mean they can't release any middle of the road but interesting sets, and players can complain that a set is like Dual Pistols and solidly middle of the road for performance? They shouldn't, but they're opening themselves up for such criticism to be more valid.

I think there is a fine line with this F2P stuff where you want to be careful with what you lock behind purchases. We'll see how it goes. Still excited about most of the stuff that is on the way. Street Justice's one picture that I have seen looks awesome.

Fix't.

They won't--or shall I say, can't--outperform the non-pay sets, otherwise you end up in a pay-to-win situation. However, you can't charge $10 for a vanilla set, either. There's got to be some sort of draw to a pay set.

Regardless, I spoke with the devs, and they said there will definitely be more new free-to-VIP powersets in the future, and more unannounced sets that have to be paid for as well.

-----
If you love playing with new powersets and rolling new alts, this is actually a good thing if you stop and think about it. Would you rather get two free sets every 18 months, or one free set and 4 pay sets a year? The additional income from the powersets will fuel the production for more; the areas that are drawing the most money will be where it gets funneled right back into.

I played the new tutorial today using Street Justice. It's so much fun, I think I may stop asking for Energy Melee for Scrappers and roll the Energy Melee/Willpower character I've been waiting for as SJ/WP instead.

They feel very strongly about making sure that your subscription is worth it. There will always be some things you mentioned above, like powersets and costume sets, that will be included for VIPs, and others that everyone must pay for.

I agree with you about the marketting, though. If they don't bring in more traffic, then there won't be a point in making these changes to the game. They really need to step outside their comfort zone and advertise in places they haven't been before if they want to up their numbers.

(And no, a TV commercial would still be dumb. World of Warcraft does it, yes, but their commercials are undoubtedly very dumb. )

From the brief amount of time I had my hands on it, I really enjoyed Street Justice. It's brawl-y, like Super Strength, but quick like Martial Arts. It's got a good feel to it, and the combo mechanic is neat without being too overwhelming.

Basically, some of your attacks BUILD combo points, primarily the T1 and T2 powers, while others subtract them. The finishing moves (T3 and T9 powers, if memory serves) do additional damage and have additional secondary effects applied when you have at least 3 combo points--the T3 is a swinging hook punch that can do knockdown with combos, and the T9 is a stun that can become a hold with combo points. The combo counter shows up with your buffs underneath your health/end/XP bar.

There may have been other moves that qualify as a finishing bonus, but I was kind of overwhelmed with all the other shinies, like the giant Shivan in the tutorial. I am a bad con reporter.

-----
I also took part in the Underground Incarnate Trial test this morning. Positron said during the panel yesterday that it was meant to be more like "an old-fashioned dungeon crawl." Whereas the other trials are all open and objectives near to one another, the Underground Trial is about navigating through (really friggin cool) tunnels and fighting through Devouring Earth and infected Praetorians. There are proximity bombs along your path that you must avoid or dispose of while you lead Desdemona through the maze, and the fight with the Avatar of Hamidon at the end is crazy! I foresee Clarion Destiny being as big a part in this trial as Rebirth is in Keyes due to the magnitude of some of the mezzes in there.

(One of the devs mentioned to me while we were blowing up some proximity mines that there will be a badge for completing the trial without detonating a single mine. "Yay Stalkers," he said. )
