The VIP server is simply a new server. You will have to transfer characters to it the same way characters are transferred today, with all the consequences that go with it.

It's going to be no different than moving characters from Pinnacle to Infinity.
I just don't get why everyone seems to think they need to move to the VIP server. There are already enough trolls in the game - just take a spin by your local AE or Freedom Court in Atlas - so while having more F2P players means more trolls, it also means more good players to team with.
I have no plans to move any of my existing toons from their current servers (well, maybe the ones I created on Vigilance) but will create a few alts on the VIP server. I was thinking of a rad-themed toon called the Over Reactor, so please don't take this name if you get there before me.

Yeah, I will enjoy having a new server to make alts on, but not planning on any mass evacuation just yet - seems like with the free to play crowd there will be higher population on the other servers, not to mention new players to help and mentor, which I enjoy doing.

I will definitely make new characters there, and I may transfer something to either make space or just to have a pre-existing 50. But I am keeping most characters right where they are.

Mind you, you must actively move your characters to the VIP server yourself using character transfer tokens.
You will not be automatically moved to the VIP server. EVER!

I just want to know when it goes live. I may or may not make characters there but with only one free transfer a month, if I do want to move one of my big guns there, I want to be sure to reserve the name for it.

And preventing name camping is probably the very reason why the devs won't give anyone early access to the VIP server. Unless the devs make changes to the unique name policy what will probably happen is that all VIP's will be given access to the new server at the same time and it will be first come first server like it always has been.
