City of Heroes Going Free to Play
I refuse to believe that anyone playing just because there is now a F2P model will be a bigger ********* or more obnoxious than some people that play or have played on champion
So i really dont see the need to claim doom and head for the gated community of a VIP server
All I gotta say is that I've seen F2P MMOs, yeah, I don't like all of it. But I've made to many friends on Champion so I don't on pulling up my stakes yet.
I'll always be a "Champion" at heart. My server away from home.

I was wondering when this crew would finally wake up and look at this as a money-making business. I like the idea, but I want to see what they plan to do with it before making a full assessment.
Would have been nice if they had spent the time making this info public to, I don't know, get us I20.5 on live a tad faster...

Me and the Kings Army will be sticking around on Champion. Going F2P means one of our co-founders who left years ago may come back plus I'm looking forward to teaming with some of the new folks that will be brought in by this.
One thing I never understood about alot of the vets here is their reluctance to PUG or team with newbies. Some of the best teams I've been on have been PUGs. The first time I teamed with Prvt Slacker, Angie B, Shaytanna, Demobot and several other great players were on PUGs. I only got into BMT because @Level Up PUGed with someone from BMT who invited him.
One of the best times I had in this game was before I knew what BMT was, @Level UP(Ir0h), @Twisted Humor (Twisted Humor) and I (Fire Fox II) teamed with Angie, her husband and a few other people. It was a great team and we had lots of fun. I am willing to bet there are a few F2P people out there that will be awsome to team with.
Sure there will some that are no fun to team with but they're easy enough to boot from a team. Now granted I dont think I'll be running any Dr Qs or MOSFs with new F2P players until I've teamed with them a few times but over all I'm cautiously optimistic.

I've never been one to cry 'DOOM!' and I don't think I'll start now. Keeping forum access behind a paywall is a smart move. I'll wait and see how this pans out. It's a move the MMO market in general has been shifting toward as attitudes about the F2P model change.
This does make CoH perhaps the oldest MMO making this transition though, which I guess is why they're placing such an emphasis on keeping VIPs around. Lots of people are very passionate about maintaining the good community this game has cultivated over 7 years. I have no doubt that Paragon Studios recognizes this and is gonna fight tooth and nail to keep that community as intact as possible.
As for facing an influx of free players, well, as others have noted, I don't see how it could be any worse than what we've seen already.
EDIT: Oh, and haha, just realized they announced I21 on the 21st of June, how very droll.

Good lord, who pulled the fire alarm?
Check the side by side comparison thoroughly. As others here have pointed out, it's severely limiting. Let me chime in on this note by pointing out that really, this particular FTP model is nothing more than a facelifted free trial system... which we already have. The major difference being that while one can go to 50, it's limited to just two toons, 8 ATs, 66% of the powersets, almost no chat, no mail, no sg resources, and even no inventions without a microtransaction.
If I had to guess, this is a move to kill third party RMT transactions, and start bringing in that money to NCSoft, while also providing the option for potential new players to actually first-hand experience powers and play that you can really only get well after 15 days of play. It's not the same FTP model as other games have used - it's fluffy language for "We're bringing microtransactions in on a broader scale than our Booster Packs. So that we don't have some sort of soul-devouring howl of self-righteousness go up from people who will assume that if they don't spent extra money for the phat lewts they'll be left out, let's just right off the bat show that if you have a sub, you will get point towards those toys every month. That way it will be clear that eventually all will get the shinies, and we won't have anyone lobbing Molotov Cocktails at Paragon Studios. Also, we're putting in a new server so that those unable to fathom dealing with the now renamed unwashed masses can relocate to a safe gated community." Seriously, I hope they call it "Praetorian Oaks" or something...
Easy guys - Pretty sure this is good news for the most part. Microtransactions WITH seriously gated content, and the status quo simply getting more options means a lot of potential for more money getting pumped into the game. We probably don't need to worry until the game goes FTP for everyone with all basic options, and microtransactions just allow a leg up. That's the harbinger of a game that's desperate for a playerbase.
Just my opinion though; Let the rioting commence. Just figured I'd try to get the sprinklers off in here

Yes, I would pay for the ability build characters as I like whenever I wanted to instead of feeling hemmed into specific methods of getting the enhancements. Would be nice to go back to playing story arcs more again as the main form of leveling instead of the Three Ts (Taskforces, Trials, and Tips). Imagine the amount of farming that could go away with something like this.

As a few others have said, I'm also goin' to wait and see what happens. There's already enough misconceptions flyin' around 'bout this, and there's no need to further'em anymore by postin' knee-jerk reactions and ill-conceived perceptions.

I wouldn't necessarily equate a concern about F2P players with a dislike for new players. I can't speak for everyone, but there are many veterans on this server that have assisted new players with the game and welcomed them with open arms. It's more the fact that in other games F2P has attracted a certain crowd known to be... generally unpleasant. Many people have experienced that first hand and therefore are concerned as to how that would affect our community as it currently is.

No doubt, I'm not saying there is a "dislike" of new players. I couldn't list all the players I've seen go out of their way to help other players. Yourself, Cobalt and Horus we're all extremly helpful when I first came to BMT. What I'm saying is I dont understand the concern over them. Some may be nightmares to team with but some here already are nightmares to team with. I think there is an equal chance that some are going to be great to team with.

It isn't exact the "access" that worries people. It is the type of player it attracts. I'm sorry to say that, but it is true (at least my experience). I can tell you now, even with /ignore features and etc. it will be difficult to avoid such players without going to the VIP server.

This also isn't a game given it's age which attracts a WoW type of crowd or even CO/DC which were saturated with insipid kiddie ragers from the first day of temp forums and alpha, in fact I would be surprised, really surprised, if the influx of freebie players is great enough to more then mildly 'disrupt' the game you can log onto this afternoon.
The quality of the game community on this server is not going to change that significantly with F2P. I don't know why people think they're going to have to flee the existing servers like frightened Israelites escaping the clutches of the tyrannical Egyptians for the promised land of the VIP server.
The prospect that *some* of the endless list of good players greyed out in my 'friends' through the years *possibly* being enticed to try CoH for free even for awhile will have me staying right here on Champion.
I'm not planning on going anywhere - I'll be sad to see the folks who head off to the VIP-only server depart, and hope you have fun with the others who feel that way about the influx of new folks.
Personally, I hope that some of the people who left because they didn't play enough to justify a continuing subscription come back, and I can team with them again.

This only confirms my suspicion that the population was getting low for CoX and that
Paragon/NCsoft had to do something about it.
I'm glad that they saw the light and are taking the necessary steps to rectify the situation.
I had the transfer half of my toons to Freedom server just so I can find players to group with.
Thanks NCSoft/Paragon
It'll be fine. I asked if I would lose any of my main characters should my payment be late and they said that they'd be saved. It will still be Champion, just with a lot more people and who knows, some might turn out to be pretty cool to hang out with. We'll see how it all pans out.
Because of PC issues, the Mrs. and I have been away. That will be fixed soon.
I have too much time and effort invested here to move to a different server. I will probably move one or two toons to the new server, but not a primary toon.
I do want to know more about the new power set though...
YMMV---IMO
