Game Freezes repeatedly - help requested

Posted

Hi all - After spending a week playing on my laptop because the AC was out and I didn't want to run the much newer desktop, tonight was my first night back with the good machine - and it wasn't a good night. I experienced a half-dozen crashes where the game simply froze (or, in one BAF, my Brute's damage bonus went to -32123488972345.14324, or something like that, as I crashed). It was most often when a lot of graphic effects were happening on-screen, but I thought I'd gotten all my drivers up to date when I built the machine less than 2 months ago. It's not the first time I've gotten these kinds of crashes, but tonight was the most frequent and most frustrating.

It's very possible that I didn't navigate the site correctly to find the right drivers, though. I got them from the site of the card manufacturer (xfx) and it shows them as being the Catalyst 11-5 drivers, so I'm not sure what's going on, or where I could get earlier versions of the drivers if I need to uninstall these and try something like the 11-4 or 11-3, which I've seen in a few places on the forums.

Tonight I tried turning off ambient occlusion, then dropped the max particle count, but the last crash happened within three minutes of my logging back in from the previous. All but one occurred in an instance, with the sole exception happening during a Rikti mothership raid.

The COH Helper file is below. HiJackThis will be in a follow-up post.

Yup, sure enough. =) My wife's machine (same specs) does this occasionally as well, but we were both on the same map last night when I crashed the last two times and only I was crashing.

I'm pretty sure the last crash I had coincided with someone else on the team leveling. I never saw the graphical burst that went along with it, but as I was swearing about crashing, other people were saying "congrats".

Just out of curiousity, was the person that levelled, dead, when they levelled up? I notice my game sometimes crashes on the resurrection animation. Actually, the PeaceBringer resurrection animation is the one that causes mine to crash the most, but sometimes Rise of the Phoenix also gives me the "City of Heroes has stopped working" message, and I have to exit to desktop.

Not that I recall. I also don't get any "stopped working" message when this happens. Literally, the whole screen freezes and I have to bring up the task manager to close the program, which the TM lists as "Not responding".

This is the only program this happens with, and it's fairly disconcerting since I built this system specifically to play City. I've uninstalled the 11-5 drivers and dropped back to the 11-3's, but haven't had much time to stress-test it yet to see if that will fix the problem.

After rolling back to the 11-3 version of the drivers, I froze-crashed tonight on a Kahn (first crash since uninstalling the 11-5 and installing the 11-3). The crash corresponded with the release of the first AV in the final fight.

I also crashed exiting a BAF, but that was a different kind of crash, so I'm not sure it's related.

Any insights or thoughts would be appreciated.

Exactly what I go through for the last 2-3 months. I had posted about this issue before, thought I had it fixed but it was short lived. I have a gigabyte hd 6850, tri core processor and amd 770 chipset so our systems have some similarities that may hold a clue. I'm at the point where I'm just going to cancel my sub and play the other games I have that work properly. Without any support from Paragon techs we'll never get to the bottom of this

I'm currently working through things with NCSoft's tech support. Unfortunately, their first-line suggestion is to run the game in Safe Mode and see if the problem replicates.

This is unfortunate because the default resolution in Safe Mode is frickin' enormous. The chat box takes up almost 25% of my screen! I know I can minimize it, but the problem only happens for me when I'm in teams, and not being able to see the chat box while I'm teamed is a real issue.

Last night I had a crash (while teamed) in which when the game froze, (a) my attribute monitor window was opened, (b) my "experience to next level" (which I track normally) went to a negative number larger than 2 billion (yes, it could have been -2^32, or whatever the big number that maxes the database is), (c) all my temp powers were greyed out, and (d) even though I wasn't in a TF, my team window was replaced by a SF window with the "Quit Strike Force" button. I suppose those could all be graphical glitches that happened when the game froze, but it seemed very weird to me.

Still, it was only one crash in three hours, which is much better than the six or seven over five hours that I had Monday night.

I am almost at my wits' end dealing with tech support on this. After having told them that I started with the most recent drivers and uninstalled to use a previous generation in my initial message, they looked at my game advisor report and advised me to update my drivers.

The crashing was worse with the 11-5 driver set than it is with the 11-3. I told them that. I really did. I even linked them to this thread, which shows the most recent drivers prior to my uninstalling them and installing the older ones.

I'm trying really had to be polite, since I know tech support can be a pretty thankless job, but being treated like a moron is starting to grate on my nerves.

This is beginning to look like a retention issue.

Well you can try 11-4. I use 11-3 on two machines with no issues. I have 10-6 on and older XP rig with a 5750 which I have been playing on this week. Since you have a 5000 series card, you could use 10-9 or 10-6.

11-5b was horrible, I would crash every 10 minutes.

Note for brave ATI users. 11-6 is out.

Thanks for the advice! I'll give 11-4 a spin. 11-3 is such an improvement over 11-5 that I'm kind of gun-shy on trying anything "newer". Worst case, I'll keep 11-3 on the desktop and can always uninstall 11-4 if it gives me problems.

Edit: Ah, they want me to go to the 11-6 drivers. Awesome. I guess I'm the guinea pig...

Purchased a new SSD for my system a fews days back. Installed windows, all the newest drivers including AMDs 11.6, then CoH. That's all I have on my system at this point. The game runs like crap. The game freezes sometimes for a fraction of a second, other times I have to kill it in task manager.

Just installed 11.4, everything seems good so far. Stay away from 11.6!

So far I've frozen up loading out of missions twice since installing the 11.6 drivers (teammates could see me outside the door, but the game stopped responding while I was in the zone load-screen), but haven't frozen up in-mission yet. Going to try more variety in the missions now...

I'm wondering if it's something with windows 7? I'm going to install 64 bit vista, do a coh install without the nc loader and see what happens. I never had issues with XP and COH with the same card.

I don't know. I have a laptop that also has Win7 on it, but it uses a much lower-grade video chipset and I never get freeze-ups on it. I probably just have to keep walking my settings down until it (hopefully) doesn't happen any more.

The upgrade to the 11-6 drivers didn't end up successful. After the two load-out freezes, I had another full freeze-up mid-BAF. In about 3 hours of play I crashed 3 times. On the flip side, my wife's computer, which is built with the exact same specs, was used as a second-account for everything but the BAF, and never froze up at all. However, she *has* gotten the freeze-up crash at other times. It just didn't happen today.

It slipped my mind in my first post, but I also noticed an even bigger problem when dual boxing. When doing so, the game, on either client, would become totally unplayable. Since dropping to 11.4 the game is very stable and fluid on both clients, boxing is back, no problems at all.

Did you try 10-9 or 10-6?

5000 series cards can use the older drivers. Not an option for 68xx or 69xx users. 10-9 is pretty stable. 10-10 and 10-11 well those drivers would hang and crash.

One sneaky thing I noticed about 11-5 is that it has an auto update drivers feature.

11.4, 11.5, 11.6 did not work for me, it actually got worse with the higher driver I went to. 11.3 did the trick I can now play and not freeze at all. I guess you just need to find the right driver for your PC.

I just wanted to chime in. Last wednesday, I did a Windows Update check and saw that there was an ATI driver update. So I downloaded it and let it install. I didn't play on wednesday, so I didn't make the connection to the driver update until today. Anyway, when I tried to play on friday, at first I thought I was experiencing severe lag with the choppiness. However, it wasn't the usual rubberbanding. The game just kept pausing/freezing up. I did run Netgraph and it showed spikes that coincided with each game freeze. I never crashed, but I didn't stay on long because I couldn't deal with it.

So anyway, today, the driver update came to mind. I saw that I was running v11.5. AMD's site said they had v11.6. I tried that, but there was no improvement. I decided to do a System Restore which got me back to v11.2. And, I was able to play all night with no problems. I guess I'll stay with this version for now.

Edit:
I should note that I have a Radeon HD 6800 card.

11.3 seems to be the way to go for the 6xxx and 5xxx series ATI right now.

That cpu usage you noted is well within the norm for COH.
