Game Freezes repeatedly - help requested
I'm really starting to hate ATI all over again. Problem is there isn't a similar performance card from nVidia for a similar price, at least for the cheaper build. I've been considering changing out the HD 6950 1GB for a GTX 560Ti.

Now that I've built the systems, I'm much more comfortable with the idea of changing out something as minor as a video card!

I have an I5 with an ati 5870. Ran fine previously. Now with more memory (had 4gb, now 12gb), newer drivers, I crash every so often. Also, although it does mostly happen during graphically intensive scenes, it crashed during a load map scene.
One of the posters above mentioned 11.2. So, I downgraded my ati drivers to 11.2 and I haven't experienced the crash since. However, it has been only a few hours.

For those of you keeping score at home, the next recommendation from support (having now escalated from first-line support to someone higher up) is...
*drum roll*
Uninstall Catalyst Control Center
So I'll be trying that some time soon. Once I stress-test with the 11.4 drivers a bit more, of course.

Been running 11.2 for a couple days now. No more freezing.

We're now to the point where support wants me to uninstall my antivirus software to see if that helps.
I'm unclear on why the AV program would create issues with one machine but not another (I have the same AV program on my laptop and it never crashes like this, but obviously has a different hardware configuration), and why my wife's computer that has a different AV program on it (but the exact same hardware configuration) would have the same problem with occasional crashes in CoH if it were truly an AV problem.
Guess it's time to try 11.2 drivers...

I installed the 11.6 a week ago, freezing again and again since then. I think I'm going back to 11.5.
I seriously don't know what's the problem with ATI making drivers, but every time I update them it's a lottery.
PD: Just found "googling":
FYI - I am aware of the reports of HDMI/DP in Catalyst 11.6 causing issues - it is being investigated; will follow up once I have more info |
All of you having freezings use the HDMI port too?
Haven't run a TF, SF, or trial in weeks without crashing.
Tonight, with 11.5 drivers still installed, I crashed standing on the ship in IP waiting for an invite.
Uninstalled 11.5. Again. Installed 11.2.
Proceeded to run a STF and a LRSF without crashing once.
Or without uninstalling my antivirus software...

...So anyway, today, the driver update came to mind. I saw that I was running v11.5. AMD's site said they had v11.6. I tried that, but there was no improvement. I decided to do a System Restore which got me back to v11.2. And, I was able to play all night with no problems. I guess I'll stay with this version for now.

Issue resolved for me, I would like to say, thanks !
I have a laptop with an ATI Radeon HD5650 graphic card, and since I have reactivated my game account since 2 days ago because I wanted to return on Cox, but my game freeze randomly with the ati driver version 11.5 and 11.6...
But since I downgraded my ati driver to version 11.2 no more problems ! I can play an entire day without freeze or crash !
It's magic ! Thanks

I upgraded to 11.6 yesterday and had the exact same freezing issue. I downgraded to 11.3 and still had the issue but downgrading to 11.2 did the trick and its working fine now.
Just thought I would add a little more anecdotal evidence.
Just to chime in - I have been having the same problems, and going spare until I saw this thread. I have 11.6, will wait to see if the update today (20.5) makes any difference, then I will do the driver version hopscotch as suggested.
Chiming in: 11.6 crashed all the time, 11.3 cured it for me.
I've been locking up, even solo, after about an hour or maybe a little more. Don't recall making any changes like upgrading drivers, but I'm willing to try older drivers. I have an ATI 4850. Where did you guys get the 11.2 drivers?
My two-penn'orth: Experiencing the same problems as you guys with the crashing and freezing in game. Have Radeon HD 5800 series. Was using the 11.5, and crashing, upgraded to 11.6 and crashing, downgraded to 11.4 and crashing, using 11.3 now and crashing, so I guess I better reinstall 11.2 drivers, the drivers I was using when I got the cards in new computer 18mnths ago. Was wondering, is it time to buy a new vid card already or computer even? Hubby will go balistic.

They might be already on your machine, which is where I found mine. If not try AMD.com, they are listed there I've heard tell.

Here's a page I found.

That's for 64 bit drivers.
Just locked up again. It usually seems to happen when I click on a menu item, like Map or Contacts.
11.2 finally let me close my support ticket. I've run STFs, LRSF, BAFs, a Keyes trial, and an Eden, plus various smaller-team content with friends. Not a single crash.
I learned a lot from this process.

I started getting this a week ago after upgrading from the 11.5's to the 11.6's. I rolled back almost right away as it was so bad, but it didn't help in the slightest, even though I hadn't had this issue previously!
Just rolled back to the 11.2's, and now everything is fine again. I'm staying on these buggers.
@FloatingFatMan
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Hmm. Wondering then if I should roll mine back as well. I updated to the 11.6s quite recently and the last couple sessions, I've had crash issues exiting missions and one in-mission lockup. The exit crashes it would get to around 75% on the load bar and just stop. Eventually, I just had to force CoH to close and restart the game to continue.
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.
Yay! I've found my sweet spot. 'Tis 11.2 for me also. *Wipes sweat off brow* Can put hubbies mind at rest, he was getting all of a dither thinking he was going to have to fork out for a new computer for me.

I was on 11.5 and never had any crashes, ever. Then I updated to 11.6. Kept crashing every hour. So I rolled back to 11.2 and the damn game STILL crashes every hour.

Just wondering, has anyone tried 11.6 driver only without the control center? My 11.2 is working like a charm, no big reason to change but was curious.

Well AMD has released the 11.6a hotfix drivers. No evidence at all it fixes anything relating to this but might be worth a try.
