It's the Little Things That Make a Difference
You mean this?
I know it's been around for a good long time. It's a nice tid bit along with the random Civie making mention of a mission or task you recently did.
Thank you for the time...

Yes, but now they have much more and different things to say, like my screenshot shows.

I was beginning to think that Paragon was just filled with Nemesis Automatons and all the 'real' people had moved to the Isles and Praetoria!

I was going to say. I've remembered them saying quite a variety of things since the get-go.
Still, I agree about the coolness factor of it.

I would say that was a bug that got fixed. They used to say a lot of different things, then most of them changed to that generic line, now they are saying varied things again.

How long ago was it when they started saying just that one line?
I think it's been a couple of years ago or so. Although, even before that, it was different. They used to give little hints and tips, such as telling you that you could change your costume at Icon and such, things that now appear on the loading screens. Now, it's much more like normal random banter.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
I love citizen chat. It's always funny to hear what they say about recent missions and what-not. Glad to see they fixed the "Nice day, isn't it?" bug.
Although I have to say I saw the strangest citizen chat today... I was standing around GV waiting for a TF to start, when somebody passed by and said something along the lines of:
"Is Smash Zone wearing that armor on their... nevermind."
I'm both happy and mad that he didn't expound on that one... xD

Though I wouldn't mind having a citizen tell me "It's all a Nemesis plot."

You never saw that one? It goes something like:
"So, my cousin was telling... NEMESIS IS WATCHING YOU, SMASH ZONE... me about a great new shop at the mall." |
I think that line is a reaction to missions you have done recently, like the ones where they've heard you're working with a particular contact or fighting a certain enemy group lately.

"But in our enthusiasm, we could not resist a radical overhaul of the system, in which all of its major weaknesses have been exposed, analyzed, and replaced with new weaknesses."
-- Bruce Leverett, Register Allocation in Optimizing Compilers
The ones where random citizens interrupt a comment with 'Nemesis is watching you' interjections comes, IIRC, after you complete a mission where you rescue the city council who have been captured and are to be replaced with Nemesis automata duplicates.

Had it occur after a Nemesis Ouro mission. Not the same one.
Agreed and I also love (LOVE!!!!) the comments they sometimes freely offer based on things your character has done and whatnot.
Such a great touch to the game.
Just last night, I logged in and before I moved from where I loaded in, a civilian walked by saying, "We love you, Electric-Knight!".
Nice way to start the day of crime fighting!!

Citizens' random banter is one of my favorite things in this game. Most of the time makes me laugh.

As MMO players, sometimes we can get caught up in complaining about the things we don't like that we forget to thank the devs for the things we do like, or at least show appreciation for improving things. I'm defintely not immune from that behavior, as some of my forum posts show, so I wanted to thank the devs for once on a detail I've recently noticed.
I'm not sure when it was done, but I know it wasn't around when I first started playing in 2008, and I haven't noticed it until this year--but now Paragon City's citizens have a lot of things to talk about if you click on them, just like Rogue Isles' citizens (and Praetoria's).
I don't know if others feel the same way as I do, but I really appreciate that the devs took the time out to change that. It was kind of unsettling for citizens to say, at most, "Nice day, isn't it?" or "Isn't (hero in zone) just the best!" aside from telling you the current time or how long you've been on patrol.
Now they surprise me with some of the things they'll say to you ("Is interrupting people heroic?")!
It's paying attention to details like this which makes City of Heroes so fun to play, even when solo. Thanks for continuing to improve on that, devs!
Now, for an amusing screenshot!
