The official reveal of the PSVita (the PSP follow-up) hit E3 on Monday and Sony was showing off how an action hack-n-loot RPG could be played on the PSV then on the PS3 seamlessly.

Considering the PSV is launching with a 3G version... my first thought:

OMGCANIHAZCOHPORTABLEKTHXBAI

Translated: Has there ever been a portable version of CoH discussed, planned or considered?

I'd at least love a Mids and costume creator application for it.

Thank you, City of Heroes, for giving me a superhero social network combined with amazingly smooth game play. Petitions signed with realistic expectations.

Uhm. No. This game wasn't designed to be played on those systems. A certain other super hero MMO that recently went F2P was designed to be played on other systems than the PC's and even they had to scrap the idea.

First: ... why in the world did you use a title that would make the Freakshow proud?

Second: As Forbin rightly points out, games designed for a keyboard and mouse input rarely transfer well to gamepads. Keep in mind that of the cross-platform games before-hand, such as Final Fantasy XI and DC Universe Online, these games pretty much required keyboards to fully utilize their interfaces, a testament to the complexity of the average MMO.

Thirdly: A portable version of City of Heroes is actually likely... just not for a Gamepad. Do keep in mind this posting from 2010: http://semiaccurate.com/2010/09/13/a...obcat-systems/

Both AMD and Intel used the recent Computex to show off their newest entries into the Netbook, low-end notebook, and so-called Cloud-book market: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/06...enge_to_intel/

Most of the computers in these segments will likely be running some form of Android, ChromeOS, or other Linux derived Operating System such as HP WebOS. The low-end processing requirements for City of Heroes fits in right around the rendering power both AMD and Intel are offering in that market segment.

If NCSoft is smart, they could position a native Linux client for City of Heroes and settle into that mobility market.

No, I'm not taking bets now on whether or not NCSoft is that smart.

That wasn't because of hardware issues, it was because of network architecture. The other other super hero MMO runs on consoles and PCs fine.

Issue 16 made me feel like this.

Personally I'd be happy with an ap similar to that of the MMO juggernaut which can not be named without violating forum rules. And no I'm not talking about Voldemort online. I'd like to see something where you can access your inventory, mail, the market and channels. Considering that's what I'm doing anyway about half the time I'm on.

Where did I say anything about hardware issues? I just said that game was designed to be played on other gaming devices and they scrapped the idea. I didn't go into any details about why they made that decision.

You have obviously not heard of LOLCats, or have been avoiding them ferverently, or... forgot?

I don't know whether to laugh or shake my head at this one. Perhaps both. I *still* use City of... to kill computers dead if I suspect them. It's the most awesome computer killer I've ever used.

And it refused to run on my old (now dead and gone) laptop after they updated it and took out lower end computers' ability to run it. The 'new' one I have barely runs it at all, and the game complains about it at that, saying it needs updates (which i can't get... it's only really used to test wireless anyway, so I don't care much... I just like to see if the thing survives a Co* session. Heh.)

I think you're thinking of, oh, Dig Dug maybe. That's low processing power. But I don't think NCSoft has the rights to that.

August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.
This is houtex, aka Mike, signing off the forums. G'night all. - 10/26/2012
Well... perhaps I was premature about that whole 'signing off' thing... - 11-9-2012

I wouldn't mind having support apps that would let me do things like access the costume creator, markets, in-game email and chat, etc. But I would never bother trying to otherwise "play" a MMO like this on a limited portable device even if there was an app that could provide it. I'd put that kind of thing on the same level as building model ships in bottles - sure some people like it, but I'd find to far too frustrating to ever bother.

whatever happened the city vault? at least I think thats what it was called, where you could access your toons without actually playing CoH. an android app to allow players to use the auction house, use invention crafting, access bank and SG stores would be nice (well, maybe not SG stores). No mad graphics, just basic interfaces.

It was cancelled, I think due to them finding massive problems with accessing the server data from outside the game or something.

In terms of a portable version of CoH: In theory it might be possible through something like OnLive, which is going to be available on Andorid devices and IPad (i.e. OnLive server runs the client and connects to the CoH server, the video gets streamed to you, your inputs get sent back and input into the client). Probably wouldn't be great, and there would be lots of problems, but possible at least.

Always remember, we were Heroes.

Badly written internet speak aside, I was just playfully asking if you think a portable version was considered. There are so many swords and sorcery fantasy action RPGs I can play on a handheld or Iphone that I wanted a Superhero one.

I'd love a Diablo-clone superhero game that allowed for character creation. There are very few hero rpg options (X-Men Legends/Marvel Alliance are portable, but they don't allow you to make your own character like CoH. The closest you get is Justice League Heroes which uses a very CoH-like enhancement/combing enhancement system but you're still using existing heroes).

There's a freem(!)ium iphone game called Hero Project that lets you make your own hero, but it plays way too much like a Facebook game for me to care for it.

Is there a Mids program useable on an iphone? If so my freetime at work is BONED.

As others have said, PC based games like MMOs that rely on the ability to use a keyboard and other complex controls have issues with going to consoles, major tv-based ones as well as portable, largely because the controllers don't have enough buttons to control a character as effectively as a keyboard and mouse can.

That being said, Nintendo's new Wii U looks like it could have some potential for improvement on that front. With the touch screens on the controllers, the controller can adapt to provide some of the more finely tuned controls while the main game-play stays on the TV. I'm thinking something like have the ability to assign the hard buttons to certain powers, then have an equivalent of power trays on the screen part. Could be and interesting experiment.
