So what do YOU think?

Not game related, I just wanted to see what the folks of Champion thought of this:

Here is the summary:

Jack Christie

- Jack makes films for his Grade 12 economics class.
- Jack gets an A, one of his teachers even lends his voice for Jacks films
- Jack uploads films to Youtube
- Jacks principal sees the films on Youtube and tells Jack to remove them.
- Jack refuses
- Jack gets suspended

So what do you think? has the school board gone too far? Does Mr. Jack Christie need to be stopped?

I think:

1) If he made these videos for a class project, the school DOES have the right to step in and complain about them. From this quote from the first article

Quote:
Mr. Christie created the videos on his laptop for presentations in economics and politics classes over the course of the last school year.
I believe that's the case.

2) The school administration, if they had such a problem with it, should have gone to the teacher that allowed the videos to be presented in class, since the teacher signed off on them, and figured out why the project was allowed to proceed. It sounds like the student is the only one in trouble.

3) These things being said, however, I believe the school is overreacting. Unless they can prove that anything said in the video was slanderous or libel (not sure how the laws in Canada work about that), there's nothing they can do to prevent him from posting it on the Internet. The school, by its actions, has caused more of a problem within the school than the videos did.

Edit: If I were the teacher assigning this project, I wouldn't have ok'd it. It's probably not appropriate for school. My point about the school overreacting to its posting on YouTube still stands, though.

The school does not own intellectual property.

Major overreaction from the school.

Canada does NOT have the same rights to Freedom of Speech as the United States. It has very strict hate speech laws and speech tribunals. If the school feels in any way that action could come under one of those tribunals then it would not be an overreaction for them to demand the student remove his posting. I haven't had the time to view the video so I can't say if it does or not.

But isn't this student a Senior? If he is, wouldn't it be prudent to remove the video until he gets his diploma and then repost it? After he graduates, what can the school do against him?

And as for the school to try and prosecute a student, doesn't this speak volumes what is wrong with Western Society right now? Instead of encouraging innovation so many in power are enforcing Groupthink, speech codes, censorship, all stuff right out of the book 1984. We are letting our freedoms go by "protecting" people from having their feelings hurt.

It depends on what the content of the films were. While I disagree strongly with schools trying to limit free speech, the student also has to realize he does represent his school, especially if the majority of the videos were made for class. That being said, the high school I went to had no problem with student made films being on the internet, as long as they weren't inflammatory.

Edit: Just saw the video, and while the school may be overreacting, the videos are definitely inflammatory and childish. Free speech does not equal hate speech. Just my opinion.

Someone did something on the internets to make someone else angry. I'm shocked!

I think its adorable that 12th graders think a petition is going to make a difference.

Having watched a few of the videos, I'm with FlamingIntern on this one. They're super, super dumb. If what he says to say is this insipid and moronic, perhaps its no great tragedy he can't say it.

Besides, he can still say it. His videos are still up. If he'd rather keep up his videos than go to school, it's his problem when he gets suspended.

Martin Luther King he ain't. I don't really get why the school called the police though, not sure what they hoped to achieve with that.

I think Jack is really cute and should consider filming of a different type of genre film featuring players of my "team" when he becomes of age.

His videos are the typical work of a high school senior, nothing special about them. Did the school overreact? Maybe, but he made the conscious decision to not take them down because of some misguided set of principles, and now everyone who supports him seems to think that its "the man trying to keep him down".
