The Event Finale

So I'm not sure if anyone here was watching "The Event" , but I just watched the season (series) finale and I gotta say, I really liked it.

I think it's a huge shame that NBC didn't give the show the proper support, time to find an audience, a regular running schedule (3 month break in the middle of the season of a mystery\thriller, what did they think would happen?) Anyway, it seemed like there were some cool ideas there in the last couple episodes that won't be expanded upon, which is a shame. But I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I stuck with it as well. It's a shame it wasn't given more time to tell the story. I enjoyed it.

The Event died a death by plodding storyline. It took forever for anything to happen until the very end.

I wish someone would make a network completely dedicated to letting cancelled Sci Fi shows finish their plotlines, even if low budget.

Surface
V
SG:U
The Event
Theshold
Invasion
Flash Forward

Those all come to mind as getting cancelled just as I was starting to get into the show, ending on significant cliff-hangers.

Before telling me the creation of this network for misfit sci-fi shows is not going to happen, yes, I know that.

As for "The Event", yes it had a lot of flaws, not the least of which was the ridiculously long haitus where I truly had begun to mesh "Flash Forward" with it when I was trying to recall what had happened. Rather than dwell on flaws, I'll just say when it ended last night I just had to say "dayum" and hate I won't get to see what comes next.

I've said this in other threads, but I really like Jason Ritter as a lead. I hope we get to see him in something else soon. He has an everyman's charm like his dad.

I barely stuck with the event during the first few episodes with the bounces back and forth in time. I wasn't interested and almost stopped...then it started ROCKING. I haven't watch the last episode yet, but it definitely got better and better.

I think she's actually a Sentinel.

But you know what?

WE'LL NEVER GET TO KNOW.

If we're really lucky they'll do a direct to DVD movie - like they did with "Dead Like Me" - to sort of wrap it up for the fans.

I've also heard that rumor that Netflix(?) might pick up the series.

Maybe in the beginning it did that, but it had good momentum in the second half of the season. With the amount of story behind that plot and the fact that this was the first season, a slower storyline is justified.

I haven't watched the finale yet, but I'll be doing so tonight. I know it's canceled, but it was a good story and the show had a good dedication to answering questions at a decent pace, while setting up good mysteries for the next season (had there been one). SyFy would do well to pick the show up. You know... so it could rebuild its credibility as a sci-fi channel.

No on V. It's writing became horrible in the second season.

Not to spoil anything, but the finale reminded me of a very specific Decepticon plot from the original cartoon series. So much so that I could almost piece together the entire scene from memory.

*NO REALLY STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT A HUGE SPOILER*

If they were just going to port the entire freaking planet here then why did they need to "make room" ?

As seen from space their "home" is no longer habitable - something Michael stated earlier in the season.

Looks at the Event, as well as V and Heroes

1) Really would have been better as a mini-series on the Networks
2) Would have done better on the Cable networks( cable execs seem to meddle less than their Network cousins)
3) The writting tended to get weak in the middle and convoluted
4) The Big break of 3 months+ seemed to kill the mommentum on the series

Looks at Doctor Who(BBC), BSG 2.0(SyFy when it was Sci Fi), True Blood( HBO), Torchwood( BBC), as well as quite a few non sci fi series, non of them could have been produced on the Networks as is. Heck NBC even found a way to murder Law and Order( when last year, they litterly made it the Law and Order channel).

Warning, incoming rant.

I've been on the fence with 'The event' from day one. It had so much potential but never really saw it through. And... to be honest... I'm not sure why it didn't work for me.

Well, for one... the pilot didn't help it much. They had so much back-story to tell and fed it ALL to us in flashbacks. I know it's easier... but for cry'n out loud... it just got annoying after a while.

I also think the week-to-week writing was pretty bad. There's a difference between being mysterious and just being vague... and clearly this show crossed that line. We didn't even get to the title of the show until the final episode! Was 'The event' the attempted assassination of the President? The deportation of the plane? The planned virus out-break? Nope! It's something that happens after the arrival of the rest of the aliens.

The timing of their plot points was rather off too. We have to sit through most of the season (and that idiotic break in between) with the idea that these 'aliens' look exactly like us and speak English fluently from the start... only to find out they were here before us on the last few episodes. That makes sense. Why not throw that out in the middle of the season, at least?

Why did Tomas have to die? His character was MUCH more interesting than Sophias 'concerned mother' schtick. That crap got confusing. She was good as the anti-Tomas... decent as the wise alien leader... but absolutely horrible as the "I don't like it but I'll kill you all" lady. They should have killed Sophia off instead. That seems like it would have been the more natural story progression.

They should have given more story-time to the sentinels side-plot. That had much more potential, imo. I get the feeling that would have been part of season 2, though.

Such a shame... I originally thought this show could be interesting on the same level as Lost... when done right. But they never found their stride and, instead, turned into 24 with aliens, less torture and no Jack Baur anywhere in sight.

I believe the "we were here before" schtick was brought up earlier, maybe even before the break. I don't remember the specifics, but I remember some references to that, maybe even back to the Inostronka breakout.

I knew something was up earlier in the season when Sophia was on the lam the first time and she bumped into that Asian man on the street and spoke to him fluently in his native language.

I also pointed out to my friend - if they're an alien race - why do they speak English and have Anglo-Saxon names?

Well, the ones that came to Earth 50-60 years ago were sent to blend in. Certainly they're smart enough to learn other languages, many others, as you just pointed out Sophia fluently spoke English and one from Asia. As for their names, again, they chose those to blend in. Better to name yourself "Simon" than "Gorlok".

Ah, but they referred to each other by those names, even when they were meeting alone (i.e. Sophia always always called Simon, Simon, and Tomas, Tomas - those were their names.)

If I were to lead an infiltration of a planet, one of my rules would be "address each other by your new names always" so as to minimize the risk of accidentally shouting out "hey xYzklbibit, can you make mine a non-fat latte?" when xYzklbibit makes a coffee run at the office.
