I hear MM got ripped off so tell me how it works
While I have not had an MM do the trials, my only two 50's are, shall we say having a similar situation from what I have read.
I have done the trials now at least 15 times each, in those times:
Storm/Dark/Power Defender - Semi-Rare 5, Uncommon 6, Common 4
Illusion/Trick Arrow/Mace Mastery Controller - Semi-Rare 2, Uncommon 8, Common 5
Considering that my Illusion controller does considerably more ST and AOE damage, it still doesn't make sense why my defender is getting more in the way of drops on either trial. Now granted they were a few different teams spread out within a week but still seems off to me.
Bots/Traps MM here, and my only "personal" damaging attacks are the unavailable veteran ones. I would think /Traps would be about the worst case for personally affecting baddies, as well as slow animations, but I've not yet gotten the 10 thread table. Last four were Uncommon, Common, Rare, Common, which seems like a reasonable random distribution (in fact I'm sure Rare isn't 25%, I just got lucky). Amusingly, I got the Rare on a Lambda, where I felt I made less contribution since the collection phase is tough on a MM and fighting Marauder with Traps is not terribly efficient since he keeps bouncing around.
I do spam my ST and patron AoE Immob sometimes between dropping traps, just to make sure I get some credit for personally affecting foes.
I would also not be surprised if the devs tweaked their formula for pets and pseudopets up a bit, after seeing its pretty hard to "go afk and let the pets do the work". Pets just aren't sturdy enough in these trials to do the heavy lifting. Maybe dropping a pet counts as several "hits" in the participation system or something.
I have read a ton of information here.
Ill give you my examples.
I play a defender. Emp/Psi While she does attack, and a lot to be honest I have noticed her drop rate being considderably different than other toons, mainly because I am buffing, healing and well, my attacks, while ok, are never going to be a blaster or a corruptor. I have an AOE and a cone at most allowing me to hit mobs with...dismal damage. She seems to get commons a lot, and rarely recieves anything decent.
I have given up tricking her up with IO's because she will grind or at least she feels like she grinds. However on TF's she can gain many shards and is decent in those. Trials...she really serves no purpose, but "PARTICIPATION" ticks me the heck off, because I am in fact doing my job.
On the flip side, I have my Grav/FF controller. While my original tactic was to Bubble all moving people I found I was getting the same reward drops as my Emp defender, until I changed it up. I bubble who needs it, or who is taking damage, but thats about it. I slotted all my holds with damage procs and I recharge pretty quick because of IO's. Now I spam holds and attacks on any mob and deal much more damage than my Emp/Psi. Sonce changing this tactic I am getting rares and uncommons here and there. But I mainly attack and since gravity has only one pet and not a pseudo pet the damage source is "ME".
Another Superhero game which took this rout failed because healers/buffers were considdered not to be contributing damage to the target of defeat and it's now free to play and sucks.
Contribution is a fickle thing, but when I look at the overall team structures as of late for trials, I can easily see why Tanks/Brutes, Blasters/Doms and scrappers top the list. Controllers follow somewhere on the list along with some debuffers, but truthfully the attack chain seems to outrank the utilitarian during these trials.
another suggestion for those without personal attacks is to use powers that aren't effective on purpose. Immobs, and holds? go ahead and use them on the AVS and the escaping prisoner Lts even if they wont do jack they still help your participation also feel free to heal allies, pets and even your allies' pets this also counts apparently
And if you are running out of endurance a lot, consider crafting and slotting a Cardiac Alpha during the trials, even if it is just the cheap tier 1.
