I convert as needed, that way wgeb they add something else to use them for, I have them.

At this point I've converted about half of the Astrals I've gotten into Threads. I figure Astrals seem to drop quickly enough so that seems to be a good compromise to me. Basically I don't want to be caught without -any- Astrals just in case they become super useful for something else.

I may kick myself for that later, but currently they serve to get my slots unlocked and slotted slightly faster, so I'm okay with it.

I convert all mine. They really speed up the process by a lot and reduce the number of times I have to run the trials. They are fun, but not THAT fun.

At the rate they drop I am thinking either they won't buy anything super nice in the future or it will take a truckload of them to buy it so I am not hoarding them for some future maybe.
I don't convert them as soon as I get them but I don't hesitate to convert them when needed. They are about the only way to get commons since for whatever reason my character only gets uncommon tables and occasionally a rare and once a very rare.

Burn Astrals if you need to have things ASAP. Otherwise I'm choosing to take the longer view and horde them as much as possible. If we finally get to the point where we realize that the "extra" things Astrals can buy are dumb then I can always convert them to Threads then.

I look at it this way - And with some of my non-Mains I even cast this eye towards Empyreal merits:
What the hell could they possibly release, available via astral or empyreal merit, that would be better than higher-tier Incarnate powers?

Maybe because it takes a lot more threads to build the same alpha slot than it does with shards? If I could convert 12 threads into shards and create a new tier 1 I'd do it in a heartbeat... spend 60 threads to build the appropriate commons - not so much.
For me right now, threads may be easier to get than shards but a factor of 5 seems a little steep of a cost. At least for now and especially since I only run a couple of trials at a time and still mostly do "normal" content.

I didn't say I was being rational. LOL
But I had 1 shard to go almost all day Sunday to slot my tier 3 Alpha. I don't know what it would have cost to make it with threads but I think I made the right choice to save the threads and components for my Judgement/Lore Tier 3's and then go out and join a team to get that last shard for my Alpha (having fun with my new Seers and Cryo cone while I was at it ).
Now for my 50 on Protector, I may very well try to finish her Alpha using threads. It is a lot easier to get in on a trial right now than the various TF's and solo hasn't been cutting it. I don't remember the last time that one found a shard - stuck at 10 and hovering. I'm thinking I'll be better off to convert those to threads and do it that way.
I've found my thread gain to be about 4:1, Astrals vs plain drops. Put it another way, on a typical BAF success, I get 4 A-merits and 4 thread drops. Those 4 A-merits become 16 threads, which now means I have enough for a common component. By breaking apart A-merits, pretty much as soon as I open a slot (J, E, D, L, doesn't really matter), I have enough components to craft a T3. Only one exception so far, and that's cuz of horrible luck and zero rare drops for that toon. I couldn't do this w/o breaking apart pretty much all my Astrals.
Plus, you can get Astrals by the bucketful. Emps, at 1, maybe 2 a day, I'm hoarding for now.

While I doubt that what will be available will be superior to better Incarnate powers acquired more easily, there is a chance I may indeed come to regret the decision to burn them. For now, though, I have numerous 50s, and reducing the grind by a significant chunk while getting multiple characters their T3s and 4s is very much worth it to me.

Meh. My first toon has 1 tier 4 power, Plant thorns dom. My 2nd, Ill/cold has 3. Seems random enough :P I do enjoy the new trials though.
