With the Thor movie coming out Marvel is doing something awesome
Well I know what to ask for this father's day!
Make a man a fire and keep him warm for the day, SET a man on fire and keep him warm for the rest of his life.

Never really read any Thor, but I love the Norse and Icelandic sagas... enough so that I'm tempted to look at this. Wonder if I can "order" this to my local B & N and see if I want it after reading through for awhile. Would definitely have to wait until Christmas or the price to drop to buy it, though.
Anything you all can tell me about these stories in particular that makes them good/great? |
Walt's sense of timing is also important. In the first few pages of his work, the word "DOOM" is uttered across the cosmos. Of course, you won't get a payoff for this until Surtur finishes his sword (fired through the molten core of a star) and tries to destroy the Nine Worlds. That's over a year later from Walt laying the seeds to the story arc. You don't get that sort of grand storytelling in modern comics.
And, as others have said, his attention toe the minor characters of Asgard was awesome. I'm currently at a point where Balder is being run through the wringer. But I'm really loving Walt's characterization of Volstagg (the gluttonous comic relief of the Warriors Three). I also know Sif's tale is far from over, and can't wait until she returns to Asgard.
There's not any one thing that makes Thor's Simonson good or great. It's a culmination of lots of things that are good and great that adds up to what could be the greatest work any creator has contributed to any one title. Some creators (like Claremont on X-Men or David on Hulk) may have had longer runs on their respective titles, but Simonson told the epic story he wanted to tell and did it in style.
Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!
Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.

Just wanted to share this other pic to give a frame of reference for how huge this collection is.

My direct market version just arrived from Tales of Wonder (well packed). Awesome collection, just a little bit smaller than the Amazing Spider-Man omnibus (due to thinner paper in Thor).
So very, very glad that Marvel put this together. Now I can only hope that they put together John Byrne's Fantastic Four run (in 2 books).
Go Team Venture!

* Volstag: "Surely if some harm came now to Balder and you were responsible, why I might even find it in my heart, so much larger than that of ordinary men, to forgive you. Why, even Thor or Fandral the Dashing might forgive you because they were once young and daring themselves. But Hogun the Grim? Hogun was never young. He would never forget ... or forgive!" I do have a strong liking for the Norse myths, so I may have to check this out if I can. Hmmm, wonder if my local comics stores is nutty enough to get a copy of this tome on their shelves for me to look at. I doubt it, but I may look. Kind of says something that I'm interested, since I like the idea of comics, but don't read too many, heh.

Story Arc: Belated Justice, #88003
Synopsis: Explore the fine line between justice and vengeance as you help a hero of Talos Island bring his friend's murderer to justice.
Grey Pilgrim: Fire/Fire Tanker (50), Victory
I broke down and laid out the money for this, since this is the Thor And Pals I remember from reading The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe as a kid in the '80's. Looking forward to the book's arrival.
Grey Pilgrim, I also commend the Marvel graphic novel The Raven Banner: a Tale of Asgard (1985) to your attention. It was illustrated by noted fantasy artist Charles Vess and, while ostensibly set in the same Asgard as the Thor comics, the characters and story stand alone. It's been a couple decades since I read it, but I remember it as having more or less the feel of your typical Norse saga. In a related point, I could see the Warriors Three fitting in pretty well in "The Tale of Thorstein Mansion-Might" or "Arrow-Odd" (both collected in Penguin's Seven Viking Romances).

A CoH Comic: Kid Eros in "One Light"
Also, Thor: Ages of Thunder was pretty sweet. It had that ancient feel to it that you would think only Gaiman can bring these days and the art was great.
Good stuff.

Funny quote I found on Walt Simonson's FB page:
Whoever lifts this book, if he be worthy....
Go Team Venture!
I don't have as much reading time as I'd like, so this has been kind of slow going for me to get through, but I just started into the Balder the Brave series as well as just finished "He stood alone at Gjallerbru...."
It's easy to forget just how good Walt's run was as time passed, but it's been really fun to relive all of it with this new book.
EDIT: cool Thor sketch. When I got him to do one for me, he specifically asked, "Beard or no beard?" My answer? "With beard, of course!" I need to find that.
