Secondary for a Plant/???? Dom
Hoping to get some insight, I am finally getting around to playing Plant but am a little stumped at what secondary to pick with it.
I saw a good guide for plant/fire, but correct me if I am wrong it looks like it might go better with a more melee oriented set? Thinking might go great with /earth and maybe even /energy. Any tips would be helpful. |
That said, Fire and Thorns have good AoE damage. Earth hits hard too, but the AoEs are smaller, so you need to make sure the mobs are all grouped together.
For a Plant Dom, that's pretty simple using Seeds of Confusion to get the mobs beating each other up and Roots to keep them bunched up.
To me, Embrace of Fire makes Plant/Fire/Fire the clear winner. /Fire has no damage mitigation at all, but Plant/ has a ton of mitigation handy with Seeds, Roots (after using Seeds), Vines, and (to a lesser extent) Carrion Creepers.
The fact that you can get even more AoE goodness with the Fire Epic (that gets MAJORLY buffed by Embrace of Fire) makes Plant/Fire/Fire a solid choice.
Plant/Fire is a very solid combo. Plant has a control for almost every situation and Fire is pure damage. You can't really miss go wrong.
Plant Ice has some possibilities too (power boosted Seeds of Confusion FTW).
My level 50 Dominators:
Madame Mindbender 50 Mind/Energy
Fly Agaric 50 Plant/Thorn
Nate Nitro 50 Fire/Psi
I'm working on a Plant/Elec now. Elec doesn't have much AoE and VS is kind of a crappy power, IMO. It's nice in that Roots can mitigate the knockback of the melee powers if you don't want to smack them out of melee range. Also, Build Up is always good to have.
Plant/Fire would be very strong, though. Seeds plus Roots plus Embrace of Fire plus Fireball and Rain of Fire sounds quite deadly to the enemy and safe for you.
I just rolled up a Plant/Thorns and got him up to level 18 so far. Very satisfied to this point. As previously mentioned, Seeds is AMAZING... My opening usually consists of Seeds, wait for them to group, Roots, to make them stay put, Thorns Cone, and then pick off the rest. If one escapes the Seeds, then thats were the hold comes in. The constant ticking of orange numbers from Roots and Thorns is very satsifying. Add in Thorntropes later (with procs of course) and I'll be even more happy.
That being said, fire is always a good choice. Who wouldn't want more damage? As a previous poster mentioned, no midigation with the set, other than the ultimate type. Death.
The Sticky Link at the top of the Dominator Forum with some good guides on different combinations with Plant/. Here's the one I read through when deciding to do my Plant/Thorn.

Ive been running with a Plane/Earth Assault off and on for the last couple of weeks and so far she has been pretty fun and effective
Looks like I will make a plant/thorn, plant/fire and roll each up to 10 to see which I like better. I am a sucker for more damage so maybe fire is the way to go after all.
Thanks for the advice all, I appreciate it.
My second 50 was a Plant/Ice dom, the easiest ride to 50 I've had so far.
Both Plant and Ice start off strong, with Ice Sword, Ice Sword Circle, Roots(optional), and Seeds of Confusion all available by level 8. You'd be hard pressed to find a power combo that's as strong at that level.
Plant/Fire is probably the stronger combo later on, but I don't like waiting around for all those DOTs to take effect.

I have a Plant/storm/ice controller, but I would go Plant/fire/ice for a dom. Ice offers more for a Plant/storm than Fire does. Yes, Fire brings the damage, but a def based armor, Hibernate, and two AoEs if you want them win out. A Plant/fire already has the damage so /ice fills in nicely. Plus, FE + Sleet is just asking to be done.
I strongly recommend fire.
Plant is a ranged set and pretty much a one trick pony when it comes to hard control. If your seeds miss something you don't want to be next to it when you're trying to attack. Fire will let you do a complete attack chain from range, though you may choose to take the melee attack.
Plants also use distraction via Creepers and it's much easier to capitalize on that from a distance than in melee range.
As for ice, I don't really see the long term value of power boost with plant. My seeds have around a 17 second recharge and about a minute duration. If I had it I would probably use it most frequently with Spirit Tree and Vines. It'd be nice, but I don't think it's as versatile as fire's increased damage.
I really like Sleet so I'm ice, but I think that fire as an auxillarly is both more fun and easier. Not that I don't enjoy dropping sleet on top of creepers, but I find the complete reckless with which you can play when you have a self-res (especially with Frenzy) more appealing. That's just preference though, and like I said, I chose ice in spite of it.
If I could use Hibernate without messing up Sleet I'd enjoy ice a lot more.
Plant/Fire works VERY well.
Also, name it "Grassoline". XD
Too many alts to list.

Power boost won't affect the Regen from Spirit Tree (or Regen in general) I'm afraid.
