Pratchett TV news!

Pratchett fans rejoice, double news ahoy:

First off, we have 'The Watch', a TV series featuring new stories set in Ankh-Morpork

Quote:
The main focus of the series will be set in the bustling, highly mercantile, largely untrustworthy and always vibrant city of Ankh-Morpork and will follow the day-to-day activities of the men, women, trolls, dwarves, vampires and several other species who daily pound its ancient cobbles (and, of course, Igor in the forensics department). Terry commonly refers to the City Watch police force series as “the jewels in the Discworld Crown.” These richly developed and highly compelling characters will feature in a ‘crime of the week’ episodic storyline. As each weekly adventure unfolds, viewers will be taken on a ride through Pratchett’s genius imagination, with the author overseeing the creation of the series, where wild and exciting encounters with werewolves, dragons, dwarfs, trolls and golems and the classic heroes and villains, are an everyday occurrence…and where many of these characters even make
outstanding crime fighters!
and thats not all, a TV version of Good Omens, with Terry Jones involved!

Always remember, we were Heroes.

The Watch better be on BBCA...

!!!!!!!!!

I am excited.

Awesome!

I thought the "Hogfather" movie turned out well. As long as they can get that Pratchett humor down, I'm totally onboard for this.

What about Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic and Going Postal?

Haven't gotten around to seeing those yet.

I was hoping we'd get a Watch movie next, because we've had the wizards and DEATH and the city services.

But...

...a whole series!! O.O

GLEE!!

Let the casting speculation commence!

Statesmonkey Sez: Lighten up! It's a game, for Lincoln's sake!
Also: Six years of casual play begins to look an awful lot like one year of hardcore play.

Most excellent.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

The chubby guy that plays opposite Simon Pegg for Fred Colon!

Come to think of it, Hugh Laurie might make a good Sam Vimes.

Coming up blank on who could play Carrot, Angua, and Nobby though. Vetinari would have to be included as well. Can't have a Watch story without the Patrician.

Not heard of Trevor Eve before, but he looks like he could pull off Vimes.
Laurie bloody could. He's got the scathing, dark sarcasm that Vimes deploys so well.

Jeremy Irons and Charles Dance both played Vatinari/The Patrician (in Irons' case) spectacularly well, although Dance would need to dye his hair this time around.
Aparently Terry has him down as 'should be played by Alan Rickman', though? (Wikipedia) Hmm.

Despite being made overly pale and nowhere near as warm (if still a tad spiky) a character as she is in the books, Ingrid Berdal played Angua well in Going Postal.
(Such a shame I hated what they did with it. It was truly an adaption, very far removed from the quality of the book.)

Pemberton, while a good actor, didn't cut it as Drumbknott IMO. Too round, not skinny and wiry enough. Drumbknott is definitely a character that can glide when they move.
Not sure who the hell they'd get there.

((Anyone who has not seen Paul Kidby's Pratchett Portfolio should go and do so. Aside from Agnes Nitt, he portrays pretty much all the characters near spot on perfectly.))

Christ...why can't I get a job like that? Making the books for TV/Film? I wish I could have taken a degree in Pratchett, heh heh...

More thoughts;

Nicholas Tennant wasn't any good as Nobby in Hogfather.
Again, Kidby does the best (and to my mind accurate) rendition;

Fred Colon would be a hard one. Nick Frost, as someone mentioned could pass for the body shape and looks....not so sure about the voice. I always think Colon would have a middle-deep voice, not Frost's quite high one...Hmn.

Still wish they'd stick to Kidby's renditions of the Trolls, too;

If you can, look out for a BBC series called 'Waking The Dead'. It's on its last season here (thanks to budget cuts) He's the lead in that and its bloody good. He always seems like he's barely reigning in his rage a lot of the time, which is pretty much Sam Vimes all over.

Yes, Laurie could as well, I agree. I just don't think he's grizzled enough.

Have you seen any of the ads for a series called House? Laurie's in it as the title character. He's pretty grizzled looking in it. He's no longer the foppish Prince George (though he'll always be that character to me, just like Harrison Ford is Han Solo, Arnold is the Terminator, Stallone is Rambo, Rowan Atkinson is Black Adder, etc).

Hugh Laurie. That's pretty durn grizzled. Though not as grizzled as that one old SNL sketch of who is more grizzled.

Also...grizzled.

I just thought of who should play Carrot...

Awesome from Chuck. He's got the stature, the physique, the charisma, etc. Would probably be a, dare I say it, awesome choice for the character.

To me he'll always be Bertie Wooster.

And if he DID play Vimes, he could probably even keep his English accent.

"Unlike some OTHER Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent..."

I have so wanted a film adaptation of any of the Watch books. A series will just be awesome. Now to hope that my cable will show it...

No one pays attention to me, cause I listen to the voices in my head.

I thought Terry Gilliam was the one who was going to be all over Good Omens. Well, one Terry from Python is as good as another, I always say.

Also, please please please please please cast Hugh Laurie as Crowley and Stephen Frye as Aziraphale. *crosses fingers*

Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!

Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.

Yup, seen House quite a few times - although not regularly. And yes, he is grizzled there, but not grizzled enough for Vimes. At least in my head anyway
