+++ collab central +++
I can't draw to save my life and my coloring leaves a lot to be desired, but I can generally do pretty decent texturing so I'm always happy to offer that if someone needs it or wants a tip.
I just want to throw a disclaimer out that any art I've gotten/had done of my characters is open for this. All I'd ask is that if the artist is a CoH denizen that you check with them first... And those said local denizens who've done my chatacters, feel free to offer up those arts if you wish.
And besides that, I can't wait to see what you all come up with!

The fact that you were able to warp your scales around the musculature in a very believable fashion (rather than just slapping on a texture and calling it a day) tells me you have a good eye for how things should look. That alone will get you far, if you apply yourself.
Besides you are in good company here, there are about half a dozen people who have all started trying to learn how to color digitally in recent months. Working collaboratively we can all learn from each other.
Okay then here is a sketch I did last year for the FArt that never made it past the pencil stage if someone wants to take a crack at adding some flats, colors or a cloth texture you are welcome to go for it.
Refs can be found here.
Thanks PS.
So got something you want to try working on?
I've been working on coloring, as seen in a thread or two. I'm not very good and your lines intimidate me CR! But I'll give anything a shot, I just don't promise anything good! but check out your other thread... I did manage to make GQ's freebie a 5-way.
I have a few pieces I've done for personal practice that came from the forums and a couple people have given me permission to post them but I don't feel they have been up to snuff yet.
Okay no problem, I'll try and post some more basic lines then with no shading later.
I went with that pic of Xodious first because there were many things it could use (flats, colors, a background etc) and even those that don't do color could tinker with it and try making a texture for the fabric of his hood or a power effect etc.
I took a stab at this. Unfortunately I don't have a tablet so adding/fixing the lines was... a challenge. I cheated and did some of it in illustrator. Coloring is meh and not complete, but I did find a neat way to get the arcane texture into the border of the hood.
Cool off to a great start Ransim. I really like the fringe Arcane symbols.
Anyone want to add a background or work on the face some more?
That's what DD (and others) have told me in the past, my response has been you don't really know what you are capable of until you try.

Yeah, I did! But turns out.. once I gave it a fair shot... I was quite good!
Like CR, I've become better within a few months just practicing, doing freebies and jollying around on the forum. And I still learn every time ^^.
I agree, you did an awesom job at that texturing. You sertainly have an eye for it ^^.
Oh and there is no such way as cheating when it comes to creating art!
It doesn't matter "how" you did it... YOU did it, so that makes it YOUR art .
@PowerStream: You're right! The collab turned out to be lot more than a collab by three! ^^.
Can't that drawing be added to the first post, CR? As that was kind of the hole start of things .
As for the new collab...
I'll have a shot at adding something (don't know what just yet, but I'll get it done today)! .

And here it is! My work for today .
Worked on Eyes and lips .. or lip *giggles* mostly, though the lips were quite tricky due to pre-shading by CR's pencil work.
And did a little touching up on the face.
I didn't have references... so went with blue eyes, but darkened them with shade.
Wanted to work on the beard aswell, but didn't know what colour it should become...
Who's up next?

Link to the refs is 8 posts up.
lol.. BELOW the image... no wonder I missed it :P.
Okay.. working on beard now then .
Edit: Beard done! Former picture updated!
Also erased some of the still outstanding lines outside the cape.

Does anyone mind If I try my own version at Xodious?
What do you mean exactly?

I believe he means he wants to try his own coloring job from scratch rather than using the version that has some work done to it already.
Tell ya what Soobooku, go ahead and start over from the base pencils with your own coloring and when you're done save a copy.
If you are happy with the way everything turned out then post a link to it so we can see how it turned out.
If however you think there are some parts that could've been done better or if you get stumped at some point along
the way consider posting the full sized image of what you have so far here and let someone see if they can help improve upon it.
Fair?

Well to be honest. I haven't ever done this before except for once. So anything constructive is welcomed.
Soobooku .... that looks pretty awesome for a second-time only at doing it.
One thing I noticed however, is that you missed the "crow's foot" underneath his left eye. And the one on his right really sticks out because of this..
Possibly fade the one on the right, and when/if you add in the one on the left have it the same darkness as the newly-faded one.
The lighting effect is pretty sweet too!
(I'd take an attempt on this, but I have little talent with computer generated imagery.. but I can still be constructive with ya!)
Heh, it's nice seeing different artists' takes on a penciled sketch. Hope to see more to come!
You did really nice for a 2nd attempt Soobooku.
I don't have time right now to really go over everything in fine detail but for some constructive tips on what can be improved upon I would say
1. I believe in the ref Xodious has a neck cover of the same blue material so only a small portion of skin should be showing under his jaw.
2. The folds and wrinkles coming up on the top of the hood should either not cross the central dividing line or if they do the center line needs to be affected (bent where they touch) by them.
3. Regardless of whether it's skin or a blue neck cover you go with the area under and around his beard should be much darker given an overhead light source.
4. The two little "V" shaped pockets under the lower lip need to be skin colored not white.
5. The area below would look better as a very dark blue rather than a pure black.
6. There shouldn't be a shadow cast from the hood on the left side of his neck if the light source is above and to the right of the subject.
7. You should give some thought to the light source itself. Since it brightly lights part of the image but just a few inches away there is total darkness it would seem to be of the circular "spotlight" variety in which case the shadow being cast down on the face from the hood above should have a very hard and visible edge that tracks along the face horizontally bending and curving as it follows the contours of the face. It's very soft and diffuse and that creates conflict with the rest of the image.
8. I do like that you implemented a texture pattern but it's a little big and blocky. Maybe something with a finer grain? (that's just a preference though)
All things considered I think you're off to a fine start and I hope to see more from you down the road.
............(I'd take an attempt on this, but I have little talent with computer generated imagery.. but I can still be constructive with ya!)

If you want to contribute constructive critique to this thread as well that's appreciated too.
I hope to see a lot more artz being created collaboratively here as well, I think
there is a lot of untapped potential on these forums that could use a good creative outlet.
P.S. I don't think you actually mean "computer generated imagery" or CGI where a computer is the one generating the graphics in response to programming (like the latter half of this) but rather Digital Art where software is being used but the art is still being created by people?
Right Digital Art is what I meant not CGI, although really .. it is generated by a computer and contains images - that'd be where I got confused. The only thing I can do in PS is err, make sparkles. I don't think the picture needs sparkles (; So, I'll just kind of sit-back and enjoy the arts.
-working on re-teaching myself how to draw, I'm out of practice. Thanks for the inspiration to get going again heh.
Right, sorry that wasn't the greatest explanation or example I gave but I think we are on the same page in terms of meaning now.
Ah well this I understand as I hadn't really drawn anything for more than 7 years myself until I found this forum. I felt terribly rusty
but two things here really helped me. One was the drawing challenge I undertook (link in the sig) which got me
drawing again everyday, even if it was just for 15 minutes or an hour and the
other was a quick sketch thread called The Hot Pencil.
I was so concerned that everything look just right for each piece that I would get frustrated easily when things weren't working out and
just stop drawing instead of pushing on and learning something... quicksketching where you have an imposed time
limit and force yourself to draw something in say 5 minutes or less helps break you of that idea
because you quickly realize there's no way to get anything perfect you
just need to get the idea across as fast as you can.
This was me a just over a year ago quick sketching in THP thread.
But over time it became this and eventually my quick sketches started looking like this.
So yeah I'd say keep after it, quicksketch if you get frustrated and most importantly draw something every day
for at least a month or two and it quickly will become a habit to improve.
Let me know if I can help, Cheers.
P.S. Sorry everyone for the thread jack, most people here I think already know my story, that probably should've been a PM.
P.P.S. Did I really draw that shot of Chloe in Cimeroran armor in Perez Park? *shudders*
It's always interesting to see how people grow in their techniques . Thanks for that CR.
@Soobooku: That indeed is a very good job, aspecially for a second try out! Keep it up! Oh and take on CR's advise . It's good . He has a really good eye for catching the little things others don't see or don't see anymore because they've been working on the piece too long .
And getting back on track with the collabs now.. .
So outstanding drawings are:
Xodious#1:
drawing by Christopher_Robin
hoodtexture, hoodcolor and skincolor by Ransim
eyes, lip and beard by DarthDelicious
Xodious#2:
drawing by Christopher_Robin
coloring by Soobooku
Anyone want to add/change/alter something on these for the sake of collabiness?

I just want to say, dang you guys getting me back into attempting to learn coloring again.
I need another hobby like a hole in my head. I'd forgotten the guilty pleasure of just dabbling with line art. >_<

Decided to start a thread for people who want to share and collaborate on artwork together as I really liked what came about as a result of 3 people working together on GQ's Storm Dragon piece. I thought there should be more of this so now we have a place for it.
People can post up linework and others can add colors and textures and the community at large can offer suggestions and constructive criticism.
Two things I would ask.
#1. Keep it respectful. I encourage people to share thoughts about what is good or what is lacking in a given piece but try to be polite when doing so.
#2. Make a mention in this thread that you plan on working on someone's piece. Some people may post up lines and say anyone is free to do whatever they want with them (in that case go to town) but barring that it's best to just say "hey mind if I work on that?" before you do so.
I'll post up some lines here momentarily to get the ball rolling.
