Now, I don't know if I'm aloud to... but.. I'm gonna give it a shot anyway...

I could use the help of some fellow-artists....
It's like this... I've got this (freebie) request...
And after 5... FIVE redraws... (somehow, I'm not fit to draw bows and arrows in combination with humans :s) I finally came up with the drawing I'm about to post...
But with that drawing.. I've gotten myself in a different kind of trouble.. you see.. it's not quite my usual style (I don't know where it went "wrong" really).. and now I have no clue on how to shade it! *looks utterly out of ideas*.

Can someone please help me out?

Here's she is without the sunglasses glasses... if that makes sense hehe..

k, first things first. Where's the light coming from? the usual is a sunny day or overhead lit room, so all light is from above and all prominent features, nose, bottom lip, etc, will have darker coloured shadow below. Side or below light works the same, once you get the 'shadow is opposite the light' thing, you'll be fine. You're doing great DD, i know you'll make this another brilliant piece

edit: i should add, that initial sketch is really good, everything is as it should be, the only thing i'd say is (something i'm guilty of) you've drawn it small and blown it up. That doesn't work, you have to draw it big and shrink it down if necessary. Computers can't creat pixels, they just replicate them, which makes stuff look blocky if you blow it up, ( well, some software can do it i think, i'd need educating in that too tho ) but i thing drawing big to start with will help.

double edit: omg i shouldn't post when i'm pissed, but something else i just thought of, about light source, you get to choose where it's coming from. So if you think, bah, that's just not going to work with over head lighting, just change it, light it from below, the side, the back, whatever, it's your choice

Or use a light cage.

http://www .photoworkshop.com/pages/light_cage.html

FYI the above is intentionally a non-working link because the computer generated image is female and unclothed from the waist up.
You will need to copy this address and paste it into your address bar and remove the space after the W's (because the
forums automatically linkifies it if I don't put the space in) but be forewarned this is "technically" nudity.

Thanks Henri!
I mostly draw the light coming from front or front/side. Problem with this drawing is.. it's a bit "cartoonish", I think. When I add shades the way I usually do... it just doesn't fit together. Like it's two styles merged together in a bad way.
Sorry for not making that part more clear...

Actually, the drawing hasn't changed scale... I accidently used a 6px brush instead of a 2px. And I didn't notice untill I drew all of it.
So later on I made the facial lines thinner.
And to be honest... I didn't feel like re-inking it... it was late and I was tired...
But I think I'll just re-ink it anyway. Hopefully it sorts out the style error *giggles*.

At some point, probably soon, I will look more into "where's the light coming from" instead of always using the same light source.

Hmm.. pissed... as in drunk...or angry?

@CR: I think I've seen that before.. indeed very handy!! Cheers!

This thread needs reviving! And as such, I am humbly offering some of my very own pathetic scratchings... Here is a headshot I did for MsLumina of her Ferreter character:

Full sized scans can be found on DA here or here. Reference for Ferreter for colors can be found here...

I know these aren't top of the line CR lines or anything but let's face it, my lines need the help of a good color a lot more than his do anyway!

I'll also offer up one of mine I got a while back from Lady Judgement. Not sure the best way to go about it.

color refs are in my sig - Burnt Matchstick, Dominator link.

Egads! You all are putting way too much effort into my pitiful lines! It's very cool of you though!

Really nice job Ransim! Though kind of annoying in that now I can't decide if I like your colors better or CR's!!

Thankfully, I don't have to because there are elements of each I like better than the others... But both are awesome on their own so I'll just do a happy dance. Besides, it's Cygirl's character, if favorites need picking, it's her job to do it!

Really though, thanks Ransim and CR

Here is a drawing I did a while back for DJ1 of his blaster Grey Ming Badda Bing.

Larger version can be had here.
His colors are pretty simple (mostly gray, black & brown).
Wonderful range of values. This looks great!

Love how the ferrets are multiplying in here too!

And indeed, the pose is very lovely. It's... strong.. yet shy... which was exactly what I was looking for

Nicely done colors Ransim. I think I like the dark ringed eye slits you put in your mask better than mine.
The one thing I would point out on your coloring is her torso should be two-toned (three if you
count the F chest emblem) not all the same color. Any tips or ideas on mine?

Couldn't you just dial up the brightness in whichever app you are using if you think it came out too dark?

Great job on that Chichester piece you did Psi-bug, it turned out really nice.

While I do want to encourage everyone to
participate here what you posted isn't really a collab, is it?

The idea of this thread is to collaborate with other forumites and work together to create art.
Your piece looks to be a complete redraw of DD's art and practically nothing of her original work remains.

Thoughts on this?

I'm not sure, CR. Yeah, I can see that the legs and face/head have been reshaped, but flip/flopping between the two images, the body-line of the pose is close enough to identical that I can't tell the difference. Certainly, a goodly part of the original lines needed to be re-traced or re-drawn, to change the fire-style.
The costume is identical, except for some details, like wrinkles. The angle and shape of the shoulder-pads, for instance are unchanged, to my eye.

Biggest change is the face and the hair.

It may be a re-draw and re-imaging of the original line-art, but I'd still count it as a valid collaboration. DD invited the work and I can see that it is the same character, in the same pose, in the same situation.

On the other hand, I can see how DD might look at the new image and wonder what part of it was hers. At what point does it stop being a collaboration of DD's pencils and PsiBug's ink and color, and transform into all PsiBug's art?

Deep philosophical thoughts!

Just to clear up a few things about Psi-Bug's Chichester Dawson piece and my opinion on it...
I'm not offended or anything. I think it's a great piece. And I know the original is mine . I think Psi may possibly used the "draw-over" technique. Most lines are identical to the original, but there have been some significant changes.

Personally... I agree with CR on this... I wouldn't call this a collab, but a re-draw of a DeeDee Productions drawing which turned out to be awesome! And I don't mind... this time ...

I showed it to the owner of the char (Welshman_EU) and he utterly loves it!

Collaboration is a pretty open-ended term. There are probably as many different ways to collaborate as there are groups of people who want to work together. I think what Chris means by it, in the context of this thread, is the comic book style division of labor: drawer, inker, colorist.

If the original linework has to be preserved, maybe that should be explicitly stated? It pretty much rules out people who use a painterly approach, such as myself, from this collaboration.
