RIP Mr. McDuffie

I just saw the news and had to see if it was posted yet.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dwayne at a convention up in Bangor, ME when the Milestone books were still being printed. I thought "Icon" simply kept getting better and better with every issue, and I was probably the only white guy out there who had the guts to ask how to get "one of those really cool Milestone baseball caps" all the guys were wearing. (He was up there with Denys Cowan, John Paul Leon, Ivan Rodriguez, CrissCross and several other Milestone people -- all classy guys and gals.)

Since I was working at the show, during some down time I got to ask Dwayne about his 4-issue run on "The Demon." He did a story that was essentially filler between the Keith Giffen / Val Semeiks run on the title that transitioned into the Garth Ennis / Dennis McCrea run on the title in which Etrigan ran for President of the U.S. Superman ended up getting involved and it was rather silly. After mentioning how much I liked that story, Dwayne told me, "I think you're the only one. I'm not allowed to work on that title any more."

After I finally did get my Milestone cap in the mail, I moved away to Albany for a couple of years and went to a show at the Javitts Centers. Again, I was probably the only white guy wearing a Milestone cap, and when I walked up to the Milestone booth a bunch of people working there were wondering, "How did you get that hat? It's only for Milestone staff." That's when Dwayne recognized me and actually remembered my name.

I was sad when Milestone was all canceled, but I was happy to see Dwayne have success with "Justice League" and "Static Shock" in the TV world. The two times I got to sit and talk to him, he seemed like a genuinely good guy, and he was definitely a talented writer.

This was indeed sad news for me today. He and his talent will be missed.

My condolences to his family.

Wow. When I read the title I thought, "He can't be Dwayne McDuffie, can he?" Shocked and saddened it was him.

An incredible talent and way too early to pass. The industry and fans just lost a big one.

This really came out of nowhere, it must be terrible for his family and friends. They can be proud of the work and legacy he's left behind.

Very tragic to read, my well wishes to his family and friends. Loved his work on the animated material he was involved in.

Damn.

My family and I love superheroes, love all the DCU animated stuff. My 7 yr old is a MASSIVE fan of Static Shock, watched them all with us. Not cos he's black, or white, or any of that stuff, he's 7, he really doesn't care or even think about tbh, just that he loves Static and Gear and all of it.

I know it's not really the same as the comics were, but for my 7 yr old, Static is all kinds of awesome, so just for that, this death is particularly poignant.
