MA/Shield vs. BS/Shield

Hi all,

Being a scrapper fanatic, I was thinking its about time for me to enter the world of Shield Defense and I was looking for some help. I wanted to make a classic kind of knight warrior or a physical brawler, so I thought I'd look at MA and BS. I was hoping for an all around fighter that could softcap def and hit like a truck, but I also love utility and versatility in my toons. So, my question is, MA or BS? I built this MA/SD on mids and it looks really impressive on paper, but I got lazy and didn't want to compare it with all the rest of the scrapper sets that worked with Shield. Can you all give me some feedback and maybe some other builds to compare this one too? Any build is welcome really, as long as you've got something to show off

Thanks,
Eli Senpai

As per most times I see a build like this I have to ask if you know that the Glad Armor +3 def and Shield Wall +3 res are doing to run you 2+ bill per?

As for your build on its own:

As a /sd your defense will come from the 3 positions melee/range/aoe which I believe you understand. The reason I mention this is because you have slotted Kinetic combats which are typically used for S/L, you would be better of slotting Touch of Death, Mako Bite, Oblit, Sirocco, etc. Also the reactive armors in true grit are enhancing mainly your type def not positional.

I would go back and try to get Melee/AOE/Ranged at around 45% and just change some of the slotting

MA/Shield is a fine Scrapper combo. However, Broadsword and Dark Melee work especially well with Shield Defense - Broadsword because it lets you use Parry to soft-cap melee Defense and DM because it has a heal.

I'm a big fan of synergy between powersets and DM provides a heal, and that's *very* useful to SD. There are other ways in which the powersets compliment each other, but that alone makes DM/SD warrant a look.

I'm also a big fan of IO affordability and flexibility, and not having to steer your IOs to melee Defense at all really helps with those. Yay Broadsword! It's also worth noting that BS's best attack chain requires an obnoxious amount of Recharge, but good Parry chains are far easier. Now, you could always go for soft-capping without Parry, but that makes BS/SD lose a lot of its luster in my eyes. Concept aside, of course. I <3s me BS/SD something fierce, and would even if slotted with TOs.

Well, DOs.

's doesn't make things plural.

Heh. While I like all of the Scrapper sets, in actual play the two that make me smile the most often are MA and BS. Really, either one will be a lot of fun, and in particular, "hits like a truck" is a strength of both sets (as opposed to, say, Spines...which is more like being a human Claymore mine).

I would say that there are times with shield when you have to mitigate the fact you're going to get hit hard once in a while. And if you get debuffed, it can be MUCH worse.

At higher levels you will find stuff, I'm sure you know, that isn't positional. And this will also hurt.

I would probably pair up the primary that I best felt had some form of (soft) crowd control. Shield Charge is great, but even with the Spritual Alpha slotted, I'm looking at about 25-30 seconds. So it's great to have anything else you can to help for damage mitigation.

my main is ma/sr, or id roll a ma/sd. My next scrap will prob be bs/sd.

One thing that might be helpful for him, and my in the future really, is what recharge is nessessary to get AD doubled and cap your DDR? Having this would, for me, determine what kind of attack chain to have, to be at least equal to or greater this number for recharge. I do'nt think its very high, but having a gap in it can be a real pain on an ITF.

If you're looking to spend one billion or more on the toon, I'd say go MA. If don't want to spend that much, go BS. BS is hands down the winner while leveling to 50 and for slotting with cheap sets, but doesn't shine very brightly with high-end slotting (when Parry starts getting obsolete). I'm saying this with a BS/SD as one of my favorite toons, but one that's tethering on the brink of being shelved because no matter how much I tweak his build, he's just not very good in the damage department. Sure, very survivable, but Whirling Sword is really a piddly AoE (Slice even more so) and I think you could get better ST damage with MA. The only thing BS has going for it over MA if you ignore Parry, is the tasty CRUNCH of Head Splitter.

Once you add the -res procs to the mix, BS gets as good or better than MA for single target DPS, and the team gets more damage out of it as well.

Very true, but MA gets stuns. OMG, so much stun.....

The recent rebuild of MA has turned it into a seriously good set. It hits HARD, and if you choose to take Eagle Claw/Cobra Strike you can stack up enough stun to even disable AV's.

Briefly.

Honestly, MA is now very high on my list of faves.

And yes, MA and BS are now quite close. BS has ALWAYS been a fine set, and the synergy with sd is considerable. (Recall that BS debuffs with every hit: It is a truly fine set.)

In my mind, the real wildcard is the upcoming Judgement slot. How hard does it hit, and how fast does it recharge?

Dyin' to know. I've got respecs pending on four different main toons until I see how much AOE we get out of it.

I'm a bit out of the loop... so it's confirmed that it's an AoE attack? Any info on when it will be available?
