I recently started playing a SS/Willpower brute and as I have never played a brute before I am wondering what the best way to play them.
Any advice is apreciated.

Picture the energizer bunny - slot for accuracy/endurance at lower levels... get your low endurance attack powers (and punch).... build fury.... profit.

You play it like you want to play it. However, the most popular approach would be between a scrapper and a tank.

Like tankers (and some scrappers), they tend to in head first to take the alpha. Your reasoning is your own. Some do it with the tanker mindset of "I have to protect my team", others do it for the purpose of feeding fury and the helping the team part is just a side effect of the playstyle. Taunt is being used more and more on brutes thanks to inherent fitness. Many brutes that previously did not have room for tuant have 3 more powers they can select and taunt is a popular choice. Again the reasoning for use is simailar to the reason for taking the alpha.

Like scrappers, most tend to go right after the bosses because most brutes have some pretty heavy hitting attacks that can be wasted if used on minions when on a team.

Solo, there is really nothing to which you can compare. Tanks and scrappers have the luxury of being able to prepare for the next spawn. Brutes however must feed the fury bar. They tend to push the limits of their health bar and endurance bar to keep that fury bar fed.

I believe the best advice people give is summed up as:
Brute SMASH!

Pretty much you charge into groups like a psychotic scrapper with no fear of debt, and mash attacks for all you're worth. Then profit enormously.

As stated, you barely need to slot damage at the beginning because fury will take care of it for you. Accuracy, endurance reduction and recharge are more important.

Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

After the recent normalization of fury, I don't really worry about it any more.

Indeed, I don't 'chase' fury anymore. It'll build fast enough, even from nothing, especially if you have large mobs attacking you... and what Brute worth her Smash doesn't want to be in the middle of large mob

You'll be expected to wade into the mob of course, so keep lucks and oranges stocked. Know your limits tho. If you see 2 mobs close together, ask a teammate with range to pull around the corner. A dead brute is useless for holding agro. If you're doing solo at x8, the following temp powers can help:
- Stun grenade
- Kinetic dampner
- Recovery serum
- Revolver or plasmatic taser: for pulls

I suggest going after the debuffers and mezzers first. If you're running a lot of toggles, make sure to slot your stamina. Lvl 25 common IO end mods will last you till level 50. Check the market for cheap common IOs:
Enhancements->Crafted->Other. I suggest slotting at lvl 22 for the lvl 25 common IOs or lvl 27 for the lvl 30 IOs. Common IO have better or comparable values to SOs and won't need to be replaced as you level.
Assuming you're a villain, and you unlock your epic at level 40, you can respec out the lvl 25 & 30 IOs if you want to.
If you have a bit of patience, frankenslotting is a very good way to slot your powers.

Hope this helps.

Don't waorry about slotting for damage untill your 30s. Just focus on accuracy and recharge, plus whatever endurance reduction you need to maintain. Some teams might get angry at you, but once your in a mission you should never stop. Brutes have one speed. Keep defense and resistance inspirations on you as much as possible and keep it at full throttle.

Enjoy!
