A video driver has crashed and recovered
What you are describing sounds exactly like the "your driver is stuck in an infinite loop and had to be reset" error I was getting with the higher versions after clicking on Contact windows or navigating Ouro crystals.
I'd guess your friend is using an ATI card with a driver version that is newer than 10.9, in which case they could roll back to 10.9 to possibly fix the issue.
Please post the results of CoH_Helper from his laptop, and we can know for sure what your friend has installed and provide more information if necessary.

Ok Here's the readout for you. I'll look into the ATI card thing but I'm pretty sure it's running a Nvidia
Ice_Storm, might want to start with updating those drivers.
We'll see....
If I go to the website and download a driver then tell it to install, the program tells me I either A) grabbed the wrong driver or B) am trying to install a driver that's no good for my card.
If I try to use the Microsoft tool to search for no drivers it tells me that I'm up to date....as you and I can both see from that readout there's no way that no one's developed drivers in 2+ years.
So what do you do when you update your driver?
I am also crashing from the game, and it's been happening a lot since I18. And I have a Nvidia 285 GTX graphics card.

How in the world do you update your drivers?

This should be the driver you need:
NVidia GeForce 8800M GTX for Windows Vista (32-bit)
As for whether or not the newest version fixes the problem or not.. I don't know.
Flame. How in the world do you update your drivers? Me and my roommate both are constantly C***blocked when we try to update.

Edit: You can try here. Try out the ones Master-Blade posted first, as they're from nVidia. But if they don't work try the other I posted. Although lately GPU manufacturers are pushing more and more towards supporting notebook GPU's with their newer drivers, some notebook manufacturers still bork up the INF files so you can't install directly from nVidia or AMD. It's one of the silliest faux-pas I've ever come across, but up until recently apparently no one cared.
We'll see....
I have had these issues as well...tried lots of things but nothing really seemed to work well.
Although with the latest patch (the one from 1-2 weeks ago not the 19.5 patch) seemed to help me....looks like it passed on to others though

Hey there awesome people who are better with computers than me!
I need some help on behalf of my roommate. He plays Coh on his laptop and frequently gets the error message "A video driver has crashed and recovered" as the screen goes black and then he gets kicked from the game. This is getting very annoying and we would like to fix it. I can give you any specs that you might need later tonight when I'm home but until then, are there any general solutions that we may be able to try? We have tried updating the driver several times but windows won't accept any driver we find always saying that the driver it currently has is better. We also tried deleting the driver and then rebooting and letting it install a driver on its own but this actually seemed to make the issue worse. He's tried running the game in safe mode and it STILL crashed. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. -Ice_Storm |
Another common cause of this message is overheating. Hows the room and ventalation?
|
As for the drivers. We tried to install the Nvidia drivers on the site that Blade suggested. The install seemed to go alright but after the reboot a Black Dos window comes up and started listing off errors. I believe it said something about the LDLL or something like that? After the window runs through several lines of texts we get an error message saying that the drivers are incompatible and have been disabled.
Could this possibly be because it's an Alienware laptop and has some other things such as Lights on the laptop. Would it require special drivers so that they're able to recognize these extra things and run them??
Thanks again for any help,
-Ice_Storm
Well what do you know...I spoke to soon
Ever since this new patch (the one to fix the lvl shift alpha incarnate bug) I have had frame rate issues. Today while playing I got into an STF and while waiting for the team to fill up I alt-tab'ed out to watch some youtube video that someone sent me in an email....
Low and behold, the video stopped working/displaying (audio was still going) so at first I thought it was some weird editing by the youtube movie/creator but...it wasn't....
Ctrl+Alt+Del two times before it finally responded and behold it was the "driver stopped responding and has recovered." Windows 7 error message that came up.
Had to re-log into CoH....and now having more frame rate issues again

Modern video cards will slow down the clock rate if they are to hot to try and cool down.
Also try turning off everything in the system tray, all other programs etc before playing.
Is it nvidia? If so go to the nvidia control panel and make sure your set to single display performance mode.
Also sounds like you might be running generic windows drivers now instead of nvida ones.
have you tried a clean driver install? The new nvidia driver package gives you the option under custom.
I may have figured out a solution!! Just did it on my buddy's computer and did a small test run on two missions and it seemed to work. We'll be trying to test it for a good hour or two later to see if it really works. anyways, for anyone else having the problem here's what I did.
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device...m_timeout.mspx
This told me to change my registry setting so that the computer wouldn't reboot my display driver as quickly when it got hung up. I put in 8 seconds for TDRdelay.
If someone use uses this please post to confirm if it worked for you or not. Thanks Guys
EDIT: Please, please, PLEASE make sure you create a restore point before you do this. You're messing with registries and can potentially really mess up your computer if you change the wrong thing and I don't want to be responsible for anyone destroying their expensive computer
I have the same problem but only when clicking the Oro crystal to open the mission menu.
Altering the registry did not fix the issue for me. I've been talking to tech support via e-mail for a few days without much result.
Out of curiosity, are you guys seeing this more often on a particular character or side? This has made my villain Widow completely unplayable since I crash every time I open her contacts list, but my hero Bane Spider crashes very rarely.
Do you use /suppressclosefx ?
While I haven't stopped the crashes entirely, I have noticed they occurred less frequently when I stopped using /suppressclosefx. I noticed the feature kept getting turned off after crashes, which I kept turning back on. Now instead of crashing 2-3 times per mission, I can usually get through a TF with only a single crash.
Not a fix, but might help a few folks. Still not sure why it works. You'd expect suppressing the graphics would be easier on your system, not worst.
I've been crashing way before the I19.5 update. I thought my processor was the problem since it's 65watts and I have two dual video cards from nvidia. But I found at first it was overheating due to huge clumps of dust. Then the fails stopped... For a day! Just had one and my cards are clean as they can get with out dunking them in water. I found a new driver for my video cards on nvidia but my drivers make no sense?
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
What am I supposed to uninstall? I went to nvidia and I couldn't find any info on what needs to go, and I can't remember what I did last time.
I can't link my pic, soon as I uploaded it it's corrupted? Try this one more time.
Also I get these red flecks in my screen after a crash of CoX or just starting up my computer after a complete system crash.
I found out my problem through practical means. I turned off my comp and looked at all my connections. I have dual video cards so some thought popped in my head to just switch them around. It would figure the one card thats been sitting in the main slot is broken but the second is functioning fine. So I'll just ship out the bad one to nvidia since I have mine registered. Probably not warranty covered but it's cheaper then getting a new set of dual cards.
