Westworld and Other Remakes from Warner Bros.

And funnily enough, at one time Schwarzenegger had signed on to play Brynner's role in a remake. Perhaps now that he's looking for movie work again, he'll dust off that project.
Interesting note about the Terminator; Arnold did indeed base his performance on Yul Brynner in Westworld in that manner, though he did teach himself to shoot a gun without blinking because that's what John Wayne did...go figure....

Smith has the comic chops to deal with the fundamentally ridiculous situation, like Benjamin, but he might be too big a star these days to pull off the "ordinary guy" thing. I'd prefer Will Arnett if the director could get him to play it more or less straight.

Not that you're stabilized, I quite agree. The whole point of Richard Benjamin is that he wasn't an action hero, just a regular guy caught in extraordinary circumstances. I'd cast Steve Carrell.

Interesting choice and I'd enjoy seeing Clint do that role.
Scarily enough, I could see Steve Carelle (sp?) in the role.

Well I think it's been awhile since there was a Tarzan movie, and who knows who owns the rights to that now.

It won a crapton™ of nominations, It was (and is still) a damn good film. Its the definitive live-action Tarzan film in my opinion, the story and the cast were bloody brilliant, If you haven't seen it do yourself a favour and watch it!.
[EDIT]: In fact... thanks for the reminder, just picked a 2004-mastered brand-new copy of this 1984 film up at Amazon.co.uk for a mere £3.07. Bargain.
Or even Seth Rogen but knowing Hollywood, Will Ferrel is more likely.

There was also the 1998 live-action bomb Tarzan and the Lost City.

At any rate, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra director Stephen Sommers is apparently still attached to direct this reboot/remake.

Yes, I saw the Casper Van Dien film listed over at IMDB, but to be honest I consider my toilet-mat to be more of a potential box-office draw than Casper Van Dien films.... so i did the right thing and ignored it.

The script for it wasn't that bad and did capture something of the feel of the Tarzan novels...

Dream Park is one book I can and do read over and over again. The thought of it being made into a movie is terrifying (how many ways can they screw it up) and thrilling (but if it was done properly...whee!).
Hmmm...
Westworld: Although I'd much rather see Larry Niven's "Dream Park" on the big screen, it's old enough that an updated remake would be a nice thing, as long as they leave Crichton's story alone. No "virtual reality" crap. No 3d gimmick. Just robots running amok with unlikely heroes worked then, it'll work now. One recommendation... keep Yul Brenner as Gunslinger, through the magic of CGI. |

And I'm afraid that either of those guys would turn it into some ridiculous parody, unfortunatly.

How about Michael Weatherly?

He comes across as too polished. One of the things I really liked about Richard Benjamin is that he just seemed kind of geeky and out of place in the Wild West setting.

On the Tarzan front, I'm probably being influenced by the fact that it was my introduction to the character and I grew up watching it on television but I've always been partial to the 1966 TV series starring Ron Ely. I think they did well updating the character to the then modern time period without making him the bad joke that so many later Tarzan movies and shows did. I wouldn't mind seeing something along those lines.

[QUOTE=Wayfarer;3440636]Because if you were to design a robot to play the ultimate villain in someone's high priced Wild West fantasy vacation you'd be sure to give him a British accent.
Er...correct me if I'm wrong, but the Gunslinger never actually spoke did he? And, even if he did, didn't Yul have an accent? O.O
