Auto-run to within range?

First post in the forums. Just got the trial and am enjoying it so far.

I do have one question concerning controls. In other games, there was an option to have your player auto-run to within the range of your attack so you weren't required to always be nudging into range. Is there an option in this similar to that? I looked in the controls area and couldn't find anything except for auto-run or "F". This kind of works, but always seems to bring me in really really close for a brawl attack. But if I'm trying to use my whip which has a longer range, I'd like to just have it auto-range me to the target.

Any tips would be great. Thanks!

No, it's just to just-outside-melee range, usually.

You could always hit follow, queue up the attack, and then the attack will fire as soon as you're in range. Once the animation starts, tap a movement key to get out of follow mode. Of course, if the enemy moves you might find yourself out of range again - at that point you'll have to move again.

It's not what you're asking for, but it's about as close as you'll be able to get with the system we've got.

There is no 'run to range' command. There is merely Autorun (default binding to R) and Follow (default binding to F). Autorun will only make you run forward, and Follow will make you run to your target, to melee range generally although it's possible for the follow distance to bug out occasionally.

If you queue a power and you have a valid target, the power will remain queued until you're within range, at which point you'll execute the power. And, since most powers prevent you from moving during their animation, you could use that to find range, if you like.

Follow used to stop you just outside melee range, but a few issues ago they increased melee range. Follow now stops just inside melee range.

The problem is, which range are you going to use? Each power can have a different range. On my blaster, my sniper attack has a 150' range, another attack has an 80' range, a third attack has a 40' range and the attacks in my /NRG secondary are all melee range (7'). And if I have some range enhancements in some, but not others, that's going to change things even more.

Probably the best solution you're going to get.

There are a couple limits to using follow that make it frustrating from time to time:

If you are hovering or flying, you will rarely go all the way into melee range.

Also if the enemy is walking away slowly, you will follow slowly in a move-stop-move-stop jerky motion follow that never gets you inside melee range.

Press the key to attack. If you're out of range the attack won't fire, but it will queue up. The attack will fire when the target comes within range, or the currently activating power is finishing firing. We'll assume for now that you don't have another power firing.

Face the target and press the W key. When you come within range the power will fire. Let up on the W key and you'll stop just within range.
