Troubles with updater
Sorry for the double post.
So, just a quick update. After quite a few hours of being stuck (it was already stuck for quite a while before I posted here), it seems to have started moving again....quite slowly, but it IS indeed moving. Hopefully this pattern will continue. On a different note, if I close the updater, and later reopen it, will it start all over or will it continue from where it left off?
And I guess that means I can merge this thread with one that I was going to post after the updater thing got fixed...so, newbie help time!!! REJOICE I SAY, REJOICE!
Ya, typical newbie questions: hows the community, any servers stand out as being better than others, how much end game content is there, any particular tips or tricks that you know that you wish you had known when you were first starting out?
Again, any helpful replies (or, for that matter, anything other than flaming) is greatly appreciated.

Not 100% positive, but I'm fairly sure I remember hearing that the updater isn't really good at determining current speeds, and that it calculates based of the size of recently completed files, and the time they took to download. This has a major drawback when you get to the Pigg files. especially sound.pigg which weighs in at 589.5mb, a little under a sixth of the entire game.
since that one file is so large, the updater eventually drops the last completed file's completion time as no longer relevant, and then you have no data to calculate speeds and time remaining off of.
Again, not 100% sure on the above, but from downloading the beta client a couple issues ago, the best way to get around the hangup on sound.pigg is just to run the updater overnight.
"My inner mind has become a reality-cracking overgod. He torments me! Help!"
Well it seems your problem is not really a problem, it is just gonna take a ridiculously long time to update for you for some reason or another, don't know if there is anything anyone can do about that though, just run the updater overnight like the previous poster said. And welcome to our little community, This may be one of the most friendly MMO communities ever... That I have seen anyway, as for servers to play on, I would say any of em are fine, but you need to know a few things about 2 of them that tend to be the most populated ones and why they are so populated. Freedom and Virtue tend to have a higher population cause Freedom is where all the farmers/power levelers/bridgers go to do their thing, not that everyone on Freedom is there for that alone but it seems like it. Virtue is the unofficial CoH roleplaying server, so it is full of RPers who don't like to break character. If farming is your thing then go to Freedom, if roleplay is your bag then go to Virtue, but if neither appeal to you then I think any one of the other servers would be a good choice. I tend to hang out on Protector most often, but have been known to pop in on other servers from time to time.

Sorry, I really did mean to post something sensible but your (Rei) avatar overloaded my brain with cute and awesome at the same time...
ANYWAYS! What exactly do you mean by "bridgers"? I've played a little bit of WoW (highest character I got to 40, with a few ~20), but I've never heard that term before. And yes, the community certainly does seem to be one of the nicest out there from the limited data I have on hand. It's a welcome sight to see a reply to a post that doesn't look like someone randomly flailed their head about and smashed it into the keyboard.
I very well may try the Virtue server; I've never done any serious roleplaying, the most I've ever done is one mini-campaign of DnD, but I would certainly like to give it a shot. And it looks like I'll be avoiding Freedom for a while, at least until I work out the basics of the game. I will certainly appreciate any helpful info about the workings of the game, as pouring over the online guides and things can only do so much.
Well, I want to thank you guys for helping me out......although really all I did was sit and wait...but yes, it seems to be going fine now. Only about 20 hours (though I'm also running other programs, so that's probably bringing the speed down currently). Now I just have to think of something to do for the next however many hours...probably sleep. It is 6 a.m. and all that cal.
An unrelated question: So I know the character customization in this game is, well, rather large. So, I ask: is it possible to make a character that is a skeleton? Or could at least pass for one? I have a character that's been bouncing around in my head for a while and I want to know if I can actually make him or if I need to go back to the drawing board.
Bridgers were players who before the game implemented it's "Super Sidekicking" system were needed on a team to allow very low level characters to team with a group of high level players, taking advantage of how the old sidekicking system worked and the rules that governed who on the team got XP. No longer relevant.
A site that contains a lot of good info about the game is ParagonWiki. Remember ParagonWiki is your friend.
And welcome to the game.

The community here is excellent, and it's the main reason I joined the game and then stuck around. A good piece of advice is that, once you've chosen a server to try, check out their server section here on the forum and find out the names of the global chat channels on that server, then join them in game. Those are the best places to look for teams and generally meet people.
Also, if you've been playing WoW, one important difference here is that the game focuses on the whole run from level one to level 50 -- there's no need to push up to the level cap as fast as possible. Enjoy the ride, and try out different characters if you feel like it.
Character creation -- I think an actual skeleton might be tricky. The male bodies are quite buff. There are some zombie costume pieces with bones showing through the skin, though. If you want an emaciated look, then try using a female body as the basis, because they can be made a lot skinnier then the males.
Finally, welcome to the game!

i make stuff...
I remember, a long, long time ago, someone was very clever using the various bone armor pieces and details along with some of the robot forearm pieces colored white while the main body of the character was clad in black to do a "Skeletor" like look.
That's the neat thing about the costume designer. Some clever player comes up with a way to repurpose some of the costume items through coloring or adding details and pull off a cool an unique look.

Update: So, it finally downloaded, and I got it up and running. YAYAYAYAYAYAY! I have to admit, I am a little intimidated by the vastness of the character building options...but then again, it is pretty easy to use, but it's one of those things where I'm always going to think about the other options I had.
So anyways, I went ahead and made my character (put the skeleton on hold for now), and I have to admit I'm really enjoying myself. Combat felt a little clunky at first, until I figured out how to put my basic punch on an auto-attack. I'm still learning all the ins and outs of the game, so if you see Hoss on the infinity server, make sure to give him a few pointers.

Praetorian...it was the only option the game would allow me. (Have I mentioned I'm doing the free trial thing before I actually buy?). Combat is becoming more intriguing, though I am confused as to why if I run into a PDD officer and a resistance solider at the same time they're both red-bordered...can't I have the option to save/help one or the other? Guess not...if I just help the rebels the PDD won't trust me, and if I just help the PDD, then the rebels won't be happy...best just to kill everyone, right?

Basically, the resistance see you as one of Cole's...
And the police see you as Powers Division, with whom the police tend to have a big beef with.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
So, for the holiday season, I decided to start getting into a new mmorpg. At first I originally thought of WoW, but when I saw the Going Rogue complete edition on sale at my local game store, I've made up my mind. I won't be getting it until Christmas or shortly thereafter, so I went ahead and signed up for an account for a free trial, so that I will be all up and ready to upgrade the second I get my hands on the disk.
So, here's my problem. I went and got the download, ran it, and it installed CoH seemingly fine. I then ran it, and it came back with something like a 15 hour update time...ok, I expected that, it's been out for a while and has 19 issues. However, when it gets to a certain part of the update, it just stops. Just for reference, the text displayed (under the news stories, of course) is:
Project City of Heroes - Version (null)
Fixing files: piggs/sound.pigg
929198:03:06 Remaining
0B/3.1G
0B/sec
And nothing seems to be moving...at all.
Now, before it got to this part the speed was fine and it was keeping track of what it was downloading (i.e., it showed more that 0B/3.1G). I've been searching around for about an hour or so, and this seems to be a common problem...however, i haven't seen any real solutions to it. I've tried closing the updater and starting it again, Is there an alternate way to download the updates, or when I buy the CD will the updates already be on there? Any help would of course be greatly appreciated, I really, really, want to start playing.
On an unrelated note, how is the community here? I mean, it is an old game after all. Any particular servers that stand out as for as helpfulness or good communities go? I mean, I do like to solo in these type of things, but I also want to be able to find a regular group.
Thanks for your time if you actually read this post, and thanks for any help you can offer.
