  1. So, my free trial runs out on the 29th. I went ahead and got the game for Christmas (gamestop had the going rogue complete collection for $20...SWEET!). Anyways, I tried to upgrade my account, and when I gave it all my credit card info, it said something to the effect of "The order did not pass risk management assessment"...what in the world does that mean and how do I fix it? You know, for pestering me so much trying to buy it, you think it'd be pretty easy to.
  2. Praetorian...it was the only option the game would allow me. (Have I mentioned I'm doing the free trial thing before I actually buy?). Combat is becoming more intriguing, though I am confused as to why if I run into a PDD officer and a resistance solider at the same time they're both red-bordered...can't I have the option to save/help one or the other? Guess not...if I just help the rebels the PDD won't trust me, and if I just help the PDD, then the rebels won't be happy...best just to kill everyone, right?

  3. Update: So, it finally downloaded, and I got it up and running. YAYAYAYAYAYAY! I have to admit, I am a little intimidated by the vastness of the character building options...but then again, it is pretty easy to use, but it's one of those things where I'm always going to think about the other options I had.

So anyways, I went ahead and made my character (put the skeleton on hold for now), and I have to admit I'm really enjoying myself. Combat felt a little clunky at first, until I figured out how to put my basic punch on an auto-attack. I'm still learning all the ins and outs of the game, so if you see Hoss on the infinity server, make sure to give him a few pointers.

  4. OMG IZ A KITTEH!!!!!!1!1!

Sorry, I really did mean to post something sensible but your (Rei) avatar overloaded my brain with cute and awesome at the same time...

ANYWAYS! What exactly do you mean by "bridgers"? I've played a little bit of WoW (highest character I got to 40, with a few ~20), but I've never heard that term before. And yes, the community certainly does seem to be one of the nicest out there from the limited data I have on hand. It's a welcome sight to see a reply to a post that doesn't look like someone randomly flailed their head about and smashed it into the keyboard.

I very well may try the Virtue server; I've never done any serious roleplaying, the most I've ever done is one mini-campaign of DnD, but I would certainly like to give it a shot. And it looks like I'll be avoiding Freedom for a while, at least until I work out the basics of the game. I will certainly appreciate any helpful info about the workings of the game, as pouring over the online guides and things can only do so much.

Well, I want to thank you guys for helping me out......although really all I did was sit and wait...but yes, it seems to be going fine now. Only about 20 hours (though I'm also running other programs, so that's probably bringing the speed down currently). Now I just have to think of something to do for the next however many hours...probably sleep. It is 6 a.m. and all that cal.

An unrelated question: So I know the character customization in this game is, well, rather large. So, I ask: is it possible to make a character that is a skeleton? Or could at least pass for one? I have a character that's been bouncing around in my head for a while and I want to know if I can actually make him or if I need to go back to the drawing board.
  5. Sorry for the double post.

So, just a quick update. After quite a few hours of being stuck (it was already stuck for quite a while before I posted here), it seems to have started moving again....quite slowly, but it IS indeed moving. Hopefully this pattern will continue. On a different note, if I close the updater, and later reopen it, will it start all over or will it continue from where it left off?

And I guess that means I can merge this thread with one that I was going to post after the updater thing got fixed...so, newbie help time!!! REJOICE I SAY, REJOICE!

Ya, typical newbie questions: hows the community, any servers stand out as being better than others, how much end game content is there, any particular tips or tricks that you know that you wish you had known when you were first starting out?

Again, any helpful replies (or, for that matter, anything other than flaming) is greatly appreciated.

  6. So, for the holiday season, I decided to start getting into a new mmorpg. At first I originally thought of WoW, but when I saw the Going Rogue complete edition on sale at my local game store, I've made up my mind. I won't be getting it until Christmas or shortly thereafter, so I went ahead and signed up for an account for a free trial, so that I will be all up and ready to upgrade the second I get my hands on the disk.

So, here's my problem. I went and got the download, ran it, and it installed CoH seemingly fine. I then ran it, and it came back with something like a 15 hour update time...ok, I expected that, it's been out for a while and has 19 issues. However, when it gets to a certain part of the update, it just stops. Just for reference, the text displayed (under the news stories, of course) is:

Project City of Heroes - Version (null)
    Fixing files: piggs/sound.pigg
    929198:03:06 Remaining
    0B/3.1G
    0B/sec

And nothing seems to be moving...at all.

Now, before it got to this part the speed was fine and it was keeping track of what it was downloading (i.e., it showed more that 0B/3.1G). I've been searching around for about an hour or so, and this seems to be a common problem...however, i haven't seen any real solutions to it. I've tried closing the updater and starting it again, Is there an alternate way to download the updates, or when I buy the CD will the updates already be on there? Any help would of course be greatly appreciated, I really, really, want to start playing.

On an unrelated note, how is the community here? I mean, it is an old game after all. Any particular servers that stand out as for as helpfulness or good communities go? I mean, I do like to solo in these type of things, but I also want to be able to find a regular group.

Thanks for your time if you actually read this post, and thanks for any help you can offer.
