We already *did* pay $10 to $30 for The Rogue Isles (CoV) and Praetoria (Going Rogue). And, unlike the often arbitrary gates that usually exist in F2P games, that money actually was well-spent in terms of value added to the game.

But it's entirely possible that this would not generate an acceptable return on investment for NCSoft and that they would have to start charging extra for every little thing in the game. It's not the way I'd like to see things done, but I'm not in charge of any online game companies, so I can't say for sure what needs to be done to make money.
The ONLY way most F2P games stay in business is by nickle and dime'ing their playerbases to death. That's annoying, but what's even more annoying is the demographic it attracts. Without the commitment that comes from monthly subscriptions, people are more likely to show up for short periods of time, act like a troll, and get banned. Why not, they didn't have to pay anything, so losing their account costs them zero dollars. FREE LULZ. Ugh. No thanks.

This game has had many good improvements lately such as the inherent Fitness powers (should have been done ages ago) and the alternate animations and coloring of the powers (should have been built into the game from the start). Still, the game is not growing in certain ways that would make me want to play more. Most missions are static; the enemies just stand in clusters as you move from from one to the next.
And I'm sure that under a F2P model, these problems would get solved SOOOOOOOO quickly.

There are few cutscenes and no voiceovers.
Quite frankly, adding voiceovers would piss a lot of people off. Myself included.

If there is ever a City of Heroes 2 that modernizes and improves the game I will definitely check it out.
I think that the devs are doing a pretty good job of "modernizing and improving" CoH on their own, thank you. They're making very good use of subscription money and recent additions like the Incarnate system and Ultra Mode seem to justify their current subscription-based model.

Ok, i can see the real problem here.... Hero, the magic of a online MMO ISN'T in the content, yes it's great when it's uber fun, but everything gets old eventually. What makes a MMO great is it's community. To log in and meet up with friends and run thru the content. Yeah the missions are static-ish, yes the mobs mill around and wait for you...btw they did try increasing the mob intelligence years ago, didn't work for the community, thats why they act (or don't) the way they do. Voiceovers & Cut Scenes are great the first cpl of times you entounter them, they get unbeliveably annoying the 500th time thru. Not to mention vioce actors AREN'T cheap. As a example, FunCom thought they'd Voice act AoC...they ran out of money quick, and only the opening area has VO. Also, after hearing the VO the first time....almost everyone clicks thru it afterwards, and thats a fact. As far as Cutscenes? I don't want a game that plays itself, the cuts they do have are done right, they move the story along and aren't too long. My advice to you is, make some friends that are on when you are, team up, and enjoy the comaradery.

Climbing to top of soap box.

I think it's safe to assume you have never tried a F2P game. I suggest trying one before you wish it upon CoH. The one HUGE factor that makes CoH head and shoulders above F2P games is that people are paying a monthly fee in order to come and have a good time. Most are interested/serious enough to learn the mechanics of the game, along with how to play their toons while gaming with other people that share that motivation. One thing I am fairly safe in assuming is when I join a PUG in Talos or beyond - the people have a farily good understanding of the basic mechanics. In short if someone is paying a monthly fee they have committed themselves at some level to playing the game. Without that commitment you get a lot of people that are just turds.

As for lvling faster, in the 'old days' it took a good month to get to lvl 20. Now I can get to lvl 20 in one gaming session on a full team running regular missions arcs. To be honest I think they have made lvling a bit too easy. It's human nature - the amount of effort needed to achieve a goal is directly proportional to the value we place on the said goal and ultimately, it's not the goal that's truly important, but the journey to achieve it. I really do enjoy playing my lowbies, often more then I enjoy playing my lvl 50's. To me it's the challenge that makes it interesting and not just 'a grind'.

Finally, if you run the TF's in order and at the minimum lvl for each, they are quite challenging and you will only need to run them once to get to a sufficient lvl to run the next one. At one point serveral other players and myself did just that. My toon made it to lvl 44-45ish just running each TF in order. I only played that toon with the others in the 'group' and we were all min lvl or there about for each TF - it was a heck of a lot of fun, very challenging and probably the fastest I ever leveled a toon. (actually playing time vs lvl's, not farming, tax tags and other options extra)

Climbing down from soap box.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Have a happy and safe New Years.

What if I want to try out an illusion controller some weekend? Its weeks of "work" through stuff I've done many times before until I get the higher illusion powers. The content is not "skipped" I've done it all before.
I have never seen a bigger case of entitlement issues in any written media than this post right here.

You are literally asking for everything in the game RIGHT NOW, and FOR FREE. You cannot get more self-entitled than that, it's just not possible unless you ask them to pay YOU to play.

You know what will happen if they do what you are asking here? The game will quite simply die with a whimper as all the F2P jackholes chase off the longtime subscribers with their behavior, and then get bored and leave themselves, never having spent a dime on the game.

You might as well have titled this thread "Kill the game, right now, today", because if you make it F2P and speed up leveling, that's exactly what will happen.

You want to lvl faster find yourself a nice AE farm ,then you can go from 1 to 50 in 6 hours thats what some have claimed in the past I,m sure that would suit you,as for wanting this game to go F2P you are in a very small group of people. From what I have seen of these so called F2P you end up paying thru the nose for everything that will improve your experience of the said game.I am quite happy paying my £8.99 a month and for any packs and expansions that I want,so IMO this game is fine as it is

Prof Radburn controller,Celtic Ice Maiden, blaster,Miss Knockout scrapper,Mistress Davina controller,Stone Hart, tank Split Personality PB.Queen Lostris controller,Fridgid Mary blaster,Shocking Fire blaster Future Elfling defender, Little Weed controller,Capo Angelo MM, Commander Buzzsaw MM, Justice Tank tank all 50,s

CoX F2P wouldn't last and i hope that NC never think about making it that way.

As for leveling being too slow? Dude if you really think leveling is too slow think again. I rolled a kat/regen scrapper to solo some of the content and by the end of a week (playing an hour or 3 each day) got her to the early 30s, i also stopped at that point because it just seemed way to quick to me as a soloer and shes been gathering dust ever since. Leveling is too quick in this game IMHO and i for one wouldn't mind if NC changed the xp rate so it was slightly slower than now or at least give us an option to have different xp rates, not just on and off. Say for instance no xp, 1/4 xp, 1/2 xp, 3/4 xp and full xp, then i could tailor how quickly i WANT my character to level.

In other words, to the OP, If this happens It'll be a cold day in hell for me

Just FYI, TameDragon, there's an option (in the Options menu) to toggle XP on and off. So if you really feel you're leveling too fast, there's a fix for that (aside from deliberately dying a lot to load yourself down with debt, which people used to do in the past).

Read my post again... i know about the on/off option, i want an option to have for instance no xp, 1/4 xp, 1/2 xp, 3/4 xp and full xp.

Nope, no, and no thanks. I have quit a bunch of MMO's that went FTP. All it did was ruin the play style and the game itself.
I also think the leveling of the toons is right just the way it is. I have played with a few people recently that must have been powerleveled or something because they had no idea what the character they were playing was supposed to do. (Not that I am an expert of anything of other people's toons, but whent he entire party is complaining.....)
Playing through the levels and learning what the game mechanics are and how to play the toon you chose is part of the fun in this game. Something that has kept me coming back for many years now.
