IO sugguestions for a SS/WP brute?

Hello,

i've just gotten this toon to 50 & intend on IO'ing him out & taking advantage of the Incarnate System. He's been alot of fun & i can see alot of potential for even more fun. Since i've never done it before, i'd be very much grateful for whatever advice you people might have. Once i get my first freespec, he'll have Energy Mastery, mostly for the support powers. In SS/, i skipped taunt, handclap, & hurl. In /wp, resurgence & strength of will were skipped. So, before i waste alot of inf, i was hoping for some wisdom from those who know..

Take another look at your tier 9 on willpower. Strength of Will is a very nice power. The drop is negligible (especially for a Willpower after running 2 min with a end boost) and more res is, well, more res. The only bad thing about SoW is it is stuck at 5 min recharge.

When I ran my last ss/Will it was my main. I happily purples it and stuck all the cool globals and procs that would fit. This is not necessarily the best strategy however. I have just 50'd a new SS/Will (i Like the flexibility of having my vet respecs avail to strip a toon, so a new one is best for me) On the new guy I am planning on following standard build philosophy. The first thing almost anyone will tell you is to softcap Smashing/Lethal Defense. this involves hitting around 45% def. For me, after that, I plan to throw on the best procs and globas after that, then start min/maxing my resistances. I havent decided exactly how I will be going about the last (my current choice is go all for smash res, or more likely just raise everything a litttle bit across the board). Definitely a multi stage process for me. Good Luck on your build.

Now see the way I'm helping a friend of mine with his brute we went middle of the road with defense but a good level of regen.

His final numbers came out to be 33% for all typed def except psionic which sadly sits at 29.7% be hes healing 79.74hp a sec with one enemy in range and 128.14 hp a sec when hes has 10 or more. Not to mention he only has a end use of 1.21% and an end recover of 4.48% with 3 separate procs that have a chance of giving him back 10% end. Then I tossed in the pvp heal proc for flavor. Now this build in terms of INF is expensive but with the hero/villain merits system its much more manageable.

Now the S/L cap defense is not a bad idea but I felt like I was giving too much up on the brute to get it. Now if you get close to say 30% or 35% and pop a small purple you should still be at cap when you need it. Not to mention will power has nice T9 power with a minimal crash. Sure it doesn't make you a complete god like the others but you aren't left nearly helpless either like in the case of invul.

See, whats so nice about this build is that he still has room left to make use of both shields from sonics and forcefields and not to mention it will do well on its own when its done. The only purples was one full set of apocalypse but split into two groups for the hp regen bonuses. But this is just one mans take on willpower, for better or worse

I may have to eat humble pie here. After playing with the build so more and going for sl defense specifically I was able to soft cap the S/L and still retain some good regen. Albiet, lowered amounts but still nice.

So there you have it. I almost think build two would be better because your not missing that much from the regen. The only thing I don't like is that I wasn't able to fit in the APP he wanted. But for that, I will need to consult him. Either way, here is an idea of what you can have.

Some good sets to look for are
3 Slot - Numina (Nice Regen and HP Bonus and fits into your powers easily))
3 Slot - Apocolypse (For Hurl or Another APP Ranged Power) ((Gives a nice regen and HP Bonus))
3 Slot - Devastation (For Hurl or Another APP Ranged Power) ((Gives a nice regen and HP Bonus))
4 Slot - Kinetic Combat (For S/L Defense, if you use this in your main powers you may want to 6 slot and add 2 Makos Bite ((Acc/Dam/End/Rec and Acc/End/Rec))
4 Slot - Reactive Armor (Again for S/L Defense)
5 Slot - Obliteration (Just a nice set overall, if you six slot you can get some more Melee and S/L Defense)
Luck of the Gambler : Recharge Speed (With so many defense toggles why not capitalize on them)

On Willpower character, if you have to choose between soft-capped S/L DEF and more global regeneration bonuses, then it's not a choice at all: Go for the S/L DEF.

You have so much native regeneration from Willpower that the comparatively small bonuses you're gonna get out of IOs will not have anywhere near the impact (or if you prefer, return on investment) that the alternatives do. And soft-capped DEF to the most common attacks in the game is about as compelling an alternative as you're gonna find.

It's also worth noting that you're gonna get more than a handful of +regeneration bonuses almost by accident in your pursuit of other bonuses. So unlike DEF, which tends to be an all-or-nothing proposition, regeneration isn't. More is always helpful; it's just not worth pursuing as an end in itself.

What is somewhat difficult on a WP Brute is to soft-cap S/L DEF and fit in large global +recharge bonuses to fuel your attack chain. Whether you want a more offensive or a more defensive slant on your build is subjective, but if you find that you're leaning almost exclusively defensive, then you probably should roll a Tanker instead.

After pondering on the question I do agree with you. Your right though, trying to fit in the soft-caped S/L and a nice recharge bonus is a pain in the rear. Biggest problem is if your utilizing the Kinetic Combats, which I can see no other way, then you loose 15% recharge worth cause you can't use the crushing impacts. 20% if you put a hecatomb in one. The biggest bonus for WP however is the ability to easily fit in 5 LOTG: Recharge with the right power choices. Even still though thats only 37.5 Global recharge. If you 5 slot rage with Adjusted targeting and Foot Stop with Obliteration then thats another 10% for 47.5%. After that its really up to what you can slot out of your PPP or APP. I think the alpha slot for Recharge/Healing is really going to help the SS/WP brute out. Now, if not mistaken the Healing portion will affect Health/Fast Healing/Physical Perfection/Rise To The Challenge powers correct? Possibly High Pain Tolerance? If so that is gunna make things so much nicer for the average and high ?/WP Brute/Tank. Not to mention the Recharge will help a ton with the attack chain considering 30% of it at its highest won't be affected by ED.

Wow. Thanks for the input. First thing, like Blue said, i guess i will be taking Strength of Will in my freespec.
Smashing/Lethal soft capped is another important thing to get. You're also right, Obitus, about not worrying too much about regen. If i get just the right amount resistance, my regen with it's minor bonuses will just heal up the damage that isn't soaked up.
Nice set sugguestions there, Sonic. One thing i forgot to mention was that recharge was also high on my list, since i heard from an io'd tank that when stack Rage six times you don't crash at all. That was a while ago, so i'm not sure if it still works like that. To contradict that, i was intending to get the damage boost for his Alpha slot, since he is a brute & their main concern is achieving the smashgasm. Like you guys said though, it'll be hard to fit in a nice recharge bonus along with a Smashing/Lethal soft cap. This will take some tinkering..

Well one thing to consider is since you have the fury gauge there to help you with damage and setting up a steady attack chain usually is more important then setting up a damage bonus in my book you could go for the spiritual slot. Not only is it effecting your recharge but your healing bonus as well. So you'll regen better and your stuff will come back even faster. Its nice that 2/3s of the bonus wont be effected by ED when we get the final level of the alpha slot. So essentially you can get a 30% bonus to recharge and 22% bonus to healing. I ran some numbers and on the brute I'm helping with it gave him a good extra 6-8 points of regen and sped up his attach chain some. Now, not to mention the Nerve can give you more accuracy, taunt and defense bonus so that you can play with your slots more on the build as you need to. Can't wait for the patch today, just hope it really is I19 this time XD

i could go for some more recharge, but i'm trying to get that globally through io's. i know Fury is the brute's thing, but it isn't what it used to be. More & more, atleast with SS/ brutes, it seems like they slot for damage instead of accuracy and end redux.

Nice. You definitely got better numbers than i did. i finally get the idea that i should be going for Kinetic Combat ..lol.. So i guess three's the max you can use the same set & get the same bonuses. i'll have to look at this again later. Thanks..

5 is the max for same set bonuses, not 3. On my fire/wp scrapper I have 5 sets of kin combats slotted and it is nice.

i messed around with it some more, using some of Ice Ember's sugguestions. A few things- i couldn't four slot jab out with Kinetic combat, so i left it empty. Health & Stamina are other loose ends. Everything else is as i'd want it to. Getting a little better, i guess..

I haven't looked at this thread in detail so perhaps people have already recommended this and I just missed it, but one IO that's very nice but easy to overlook is the Force Feedback Chance for +Recharge when slotted in Footstomp.

It gives a 10% chance per affected critter for a 100% +recharge bonus (nonstacking) for 5 seconds. As an IO'd SS/WP you'll likely always be at the target cap when you fire off Footstomp and you'll get the buff virtually guaranteed.

It's looking better.

One thing to keep in mind is to closely look at the bonus you're getting from the sets. For example, having four Kinetic Combat IOs in a power gives you 3.75% smashing/lethal defense. To me, that's a big help because, when you use it in five powers, you get 18.75% defense to smashing/lethal, on top of what your powers already give you. It adds up quickly.

That said, I'm wondering why you're slotting Red Fortune in several powers. It's giving a slight buff to fire/cold resistance and a 2% damage buff. I don't see this as a big help to your character. You could put in a few IOs from Luck of the Gambler and use the rest of the slots in other powers.

I'm not saying don't go your own way, but look at the set bonuses when you're making a build. The different sets will enhance your powers in similar ways, but it's the bonuses that can put your character over the top.

Yep. It's better.

I still wouldn't use Doctored Wounds in High Pain Tolerance. I'd put four Reactive Armors in there to get the 1.25% smashing/lethal defense bonus. I'd also put four of them in most of the powers that take damage resistance enhancements: Tough, Mind Over Body and Strength of Will.

I use six Eradications in Footstomp for the same reason. Having six gives you 3.75% smashing/lethal defense.

I also six-slotted Taunt with Perfect Zinger to get 3.125% smashing/lethal defense.

You could have another 10% or so smashing/lethal defense. Remember, the soft-cap is 45%, so if you reach that, you pretty much have the best possible defense against the most common damage types in the game.

Again, I'm not saying my suggestions are the only way to build your brute. I'm saying be aware of the choices you're making with IO sets and what they add to your character. Have a goal in mind when you're creating your build and make your choices based on what will help you reach that goal.
