I came here years ago and some great people helped me out with tuning my PC a bit. Well, I'm back and sadly I still have the same computer. I know it's a dino and I should replace it ASAP but its just not an option right now. I play this game on the lowest settings and have done so since i2. Lately I had a bout of virus's on my PC and I think I did my best cleaning things up. I use this comp for music, Facebook (no FB games), and CoX. If there's anyone willing to take a look and help me out just tell me what I need to post I forget whats required. I'm getting a "Unknown Hard Error" (blue screen) now and I never have before. I'm also getting the "Just-in-time debugger" pop up regularly. Stuff I tried googleing either didnt work or was suspiciously miss-leading. Ok just to give you fair warning what your getting into heres my system info.

MS windows XP home SP2
Intel Celeron CPU, 2.40GHz
1.2GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500

Like my original Dell installation disc's? Yes.....are you suggesting a reinstall/drive wipe? I have a small problem with that.....45gig's worth of MP3's I can't replace if I lose. I'm hoping to come up with the cash for a external drive by x-mass so I can get those files off the computer.

No, I wouldn't try that first. But XP alows for a non-destructive re-install. But I wouldn't try that first either.

I would start with sfc /scannow

This will scan your system for corrupt system files and then replace them if you have source to copy them from.
If you have your i386 file you may be able to use that as your source.

you go start button > run > cmd <enter>
then in the command box type in sfc /scannow

Also bear in mind that you may have a hardware problem instead or as well.

RAM can give funky errors and PSUs can do so as well.

I ran a chkdsk over night lastnight and havent had a blue screen (UNKNOWN HARD ERROR) since so if I had some bad/corrupt sectors I think that got it. I'm Running a full Malwarebytes scan right now I'll try your suggesting soon as it completes.

sfc /scannow is done it did not report anything.

Two things you should update are your Operating System and video card drivers:

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.100216-1441)

Video Device Name: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500
Manufacturer / Chip: NVIDIA / GeForce FX 5500
Video Memory: 128.0 MB
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.9131
Driver Date: 6/1/2006 4:22:00 PM
Driver Language: English

Use Windows Update to update your OS to XP Service Pack 3 and NVidia does have newer drivers (dated 2008) for your GeForce FX 5500.

Thanks Tex is there a proper way to install a new video driver? When I just use windows driver update it says no new drivers available. I'd google this but it seems my internet explorer is completely compromised any link I click on in google just leads to a wall of redirects. Also trying to figure out how to use Windows Update to get SP3.

No, the newest Service Pack for the 32-bit version of Windows XP is Service Pack 3.

You can download the standalone installer from Microsoft using this link.

You can download the 175319 WHQL drivers from nVidia using this link.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Info I got was directly from Microsofts website. Said to goto My Comp > Properties > System and if it didn't say I had XP64bit, it ment I have the 32bit and SP2 is the only update availble. Must have been a outdated Info page. I'm Downloading SP3 now. I'm hoping maybe it will close what ever security hole I have now. My internet explorer is completely borked (constant redirects and Pop-up ad's).

Oh and Texas Justice the new Nvidia drivers are already installed thanks for the Hyperlinks since I cannot google anything.

Saw that after I finished my post. I started it before you posted the new CoHHelper output but looking up the links takes me longer than it used to when I had a file with the addresses of those pages. Guess I deleted that file too soon.

OK SP3 is installed and running. Going through my Anti Mal and virus programs to try and clear up whatever it is I got.

FireFox -- Safer than IE in my opinion.

AdBlock Plus -- An addon for FireFox to block ads, may help a little against malware by blocking the scripts in certain ads.

MalWareBytes -- Use as a supplement to your anti-virus software. Use it to scan your entire system to search for and remove malware from it.

(I'm not suggesting NoScript, because it's a complex and powerful tool and thus, not for the inexperienced or faint of heart!)

Switching to FireFox now....and I'll add Adblock. I already use MalwareBytes and its still not getting everything. I used AGV but uninstalled since the blue screens of death (UNKOWN HARD ERROR) did'nt start till I installed AGV 2days ago (I was backtracking). It seems like AGV is a bit of a resource hog (I dont have very much resources to spare). Is there any other free anti-virus program that works well? It qould be great if it had a "OFF" button also for when I'm gaming.

I can not stress enough how nuts this is. Anything that would be even a SLIGHT INCONVENIENCE if you lost it, should be backed up.

The overwhelming majority of computer users have the wrong mindset. Most people need to understand that they will be using computers on a regular basis the rest of their lives. It simply is not a question of *IF* you will have a hardware failure causing lost of data. The only question is *WHEN*.

Microsoft Security Essentials works rather well for me. Much lighter footprint than AVG. And it's free. I was a big AVG user for years and heartily recommended it. It seems to have joined the ranks of bloatware and resource hogs of late though, so I've looked around and MSE fills my needs. Of course, I'm not the typical web surfer.

Also, I noticed that your Free Space on the C: drive is at only 13%. Windows gets a bit flaky with some things when free space gets below 20%. It's a hold over from the days of smaller drives, but they haven't updates some of the code as larger drives became available. I'd recommend freeing up as much space as you can and try to keep it above 20% Free Space.

That small amount of Free Space combined with the relatively low amount of memory can often manifest oddly. Combining the low memory with the low drive space and that old of a video card is really pushing it for CoH to perform well.

I personally use Avira. Works great for me. http://www.free-av.com/

You should start the pc in safemode and do a full system scan that way. The one time my pc got infected with malware none of the scanners I ran found it. But when I ran them a second time in safemode the evil bugger was firmly squashed.

I also recommend Spybot - search & destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html to use togheter with Malwarebytes. It's another malware scanner but this one also acts as a preventive shield against spyware (as long as you update once a week).
