They're moving the European servers
So if they merge servers will we just get dumped onto the American ones? or will Union, Defiant etc remain? And will I become @EU_Virtue because an American has the same global as me or worse still will I have to choose a new name althogether?
The only difference we should notice at this stage is an improvement in performance in the UK.
It may be different for French and German players but the connection between the UK & US is often better than the one we have to the servers now.
So far there has been no announcement regarding merging lists and I don't expect we'll be getting anything soon - so in effect we'll experience a few hours down time and then hopefully less lag.

Rather than 'merge', they could just put them in the list of servers available to all and give everyone a week of free server transfers.

Cos the former is a terrible idea and the later is exactly what we want.
I think that what Zombie Man means is that we would have a merged server list which is desirable. However a week of free server transfers straight after such a list merge would kill the EU servers in a mass migration to NA servers.
Instead it would be better if no server transfers were offered, thereby encouraging NA players to roll up on the former EU servers and the EU players a chance to try out all of the NA servers. My altisis would certainly go into overdrive for a short period.

Free server transfers would kill the EU servers quicker than a new upcoming superhero game offering 6 months free gameplay.
Any potential list merge would need to be handled way more sensitively than that.

What would happen with a list merge followed by free transfers:
- Some people would move lesser-played EU alts off onto another server.
- Some people would roll new characters - both ways, to and from EU.
- Some people would say "I'm not going over there."
- Some EU players in the NA would go "Hey, I know those servers!" and roll alts THERE.
- Some of my fellow Americans would roll on Zukunft and go "lol wut spk englesh nub wut u say?"
- Some would transfer to Freedom and go "Someone just said 'lol wut spk englesh nub wut u say?' to me. Defiant, take me back!"
- Sprinkle with /ragequit and doooooooooooooooooooom posts, serve warm, feeds 6.

Really? REALLY? This would be sublime news!
(although it will mean I will shuttle between one account and the other on an almost monthly basis, but I don't mind that). I could Gleemail between my accounts, which would be excellent.
They shouldn't offer a weeks worth of free transfers though if they do merge. To do so would be missing out on a lot of potential revenue.
I think the main effect would be that a lot of people, like me, would roll (yet another) alt on a EU Server to see their compatriots and run GR. Of course it will work both ways but I feel the net effect would be more NA accounts trying out alts on Onion and Deviant.
Yes, I'm aware the announcement specifically says "No merge at this time" but surely it would have to happen fairly soon afterwards (otherwise why bother going to the expense and hardship of setting up a new server group and transferring all those 1s and 0s).
On the other plus side does it mean the EU servers are being brought inline with the US ones Hardware-wise?
... right. Just like how everyone transfers to Freedumb every time free transfers have been offered now.

My concern is that for a couple of years before the forums were merged there was a constant cry from many of the EU forumites for a server merge - and many players on Defiant jumped ship to Union when the slump was at its worst claiming that Defiant was dead - and although that wasn't factually true, it did mean Defiant took a hit.
Even last xmas with the free transfers given out traffic was largely one way from Defiant to Union other than the parking of 50s.
Many people who may not even frequent the forums also still claim - erroneously as it happens - that Defiant is still a low population server and would almost certainly jump to Freedom or one of the others simply because they perceive it to be "better" - regardless of the actual facts.
I strongly suspect that if free transfers were given out with a subsequent merge, only those who had no emotional/time investment - ie those not part of big SGs, server channels, groups of friends etc would feel encouraged to jump - and once it starts it becomes a slow haemorrhage that will bleed the server to a lingering death.
One option - and it would take a lot of doing - following a list merge would be to offer transfers from only the highest population servers to give some kind of load balancing, but that also has some issues.

I guess that if SGs (including bases) could do a wholesale move then you might get them moving if the high population server is deemed to have performance issues, but otherwise I'd imagine that it appeals most to individuals and small groups who aren't well established/don't have ties to other players on the home server. Does attracting a lot of solo/duo players to an EU server help much?
Better IMO to list merge and have no extraordinary transfer period.

Which I briefly considered then dismissed, as what sort of MMO player decides to knowingly move from a high population server to a low population server?

I agree. I'm only putting it out there as an option

YAY!
GREAT news. UK player here and this has always annoyed me. Just getting those off those servers in germany will be great.
And as to merge I think it will be better to merge the lists to give all players access to US/EU but keep the EU servers as a seperate entity. no transfers etc.
I would be happy with that.
So they are moving the European servers to the United States, could anyone more technically minded than myself tell me what the implications are?
