Cobat Jumping vs Weave - better offer on Def?
City of Data, part of the Red Tomax portion of the CoH Titan Network, is made for questions like this.
Brute Weave has 3.75% defense for an endurance cost of .1625 per half second.
Brute Combat Jumping has 1.875% Defense for an endurance cost of .0325 per half second.

Since this is a defensive question thread I would like to post my question here as well. Does anyone have a link to a detailed explanation about defense? My exact question is:
I have a DP/Elec/Elec Blaster. I have several IO set bonuses that give postional defense. AoE and Ranged in particular but my melee is slacking. So I was thinking about going cold for FA or Scorp for the shield. This will give me good S/L def. I cant use Mids because I have a mac so Im going to throw out some hypothetical numbers.
With FA or SS:
S/L = 30%
Melee = 10%
AoE = 31%
Ranged = 20%
Other Damage types = 5%
If I fight an enemy that does S/L melee damage is the mobs chance to hit based off my S/L or melee? Im assuming S/L because its higher...But now lets say that mob does AoE S/L damage is the mobs chance to hit based of my AoE because it higher? Im hoping yes.
I hope this makes sense and is easily answered. Thanks in advance

So, using the numbers you have above:
If someone throws a Fireball at you (marked as Smashing, Fire and AoE) the game will count you AoE defense (31%).
If someone shoots at you with a gun (marked as Lethal and Ranged) the game will count your S/L defense (30%).
Basically, if you are taking a shield such as Scorpion Shield or Frozen Armor you should be using set bonuses to stack more S/L defense with it, ignoring Range, AoE, Melee.

Maybe im missing something super easy like most mobs do S/L damage. To me stacking S/L and ignoring everything else is like have 1 good player and 10 crappy ones on a football team. If my first sentence is correct then I suppose I have a lot of work to do.

IMO, if you can afford to concentrate on building defense to one type, (it's really two types, but you know what I mean) S/L is by far the best bang for the buck. Especially if you have a readily available power that provides a substantial amount of S/L defense that you can build on.

I don't recall the exact portion of all attacks anymore but it is a very large majority of the attacks used in the game that fall into this category.
Global: @Kelig
Only Defense of like types stacks with each other and the game uses the Highest value you have that applies to the attack in question.

Second thing - Fireball's damage is type smashing & fire. However, damage has nothing, really, to do with attack types. Fireball is Fire/AoE for attack vectors - your S/L defense has nothing to do with how hard it is for fireball to hit you.

If im reading you right Rajani, than your a little bit wrong.
Most attacks carry 2 markers for defence, 1 is Damage type(s) and 2 is Attack Type,
1) Most attacks in the game carry atleast one Damage type, but many are actually flagged for two, Fire/Smashing or Toxic/Lethal, Energy/Smashing etc etc, you could occasionally get am exotic varierty, but mroe often than not, its Something// Smashing or Lethal.
If we look at shadow Maul, its about 50/50 Negative/Smashing, but even if you had a hyptothetical attack that was 99.9% Toxic (the damage type thats hardest to built defence to) and only 0.01% Smashing, than your smashing defence value would still apply to the power if it is the highest one that applies to the power (this is, at higher defence numbers where I think defence exceeds resistance exponentially)
2) some psionic attacks ignore the Attack Type flagging, and some are counterintuitively marked, should Shadow Maul be melee or AoE? its a melee cone, so it could be both, this can only have one Attack Type, so really, if your close to softcapping all 3, go for it, but its ahrd to tell whats gonna hit you and whats not.
So, ill keep on Shadow Maul here, I don't know if its flagged for AoE or for Melee, but we do know its flagged for Negative and Smashing, so if I had;
10% Negative defence
45% Smashing defence
then it will take the smashing defence value in it's final tohit calculation, if we had 45% both, then it would use either, and if negatiev were higher it would use that.
Thats why, with as someone said apparently over 70% f attacks in this game carying a Smashing/Lethal Tag, the easiest softcap to aim for in MOST given opportunities will be Smashing/Lethal. And to go back to my correction of Rajani, for the case of defence fireball is Fire/Smashing/AoE and will take whichever of those values is highest when calculating defence.

So, a large amount of smashing defense won't help if Fireballs are being chucked at you.

You don't even have to have a character with fireball. Either "start" making a new one, and open up the Power details and hover over fireball, or type /l [Fire Ball], click the result, and go to detailed power info.
When they build a power, they basically hit a check box for what defenses that power will check against. They could make a melee-ranged, Psi attack that checks vs. Ranged/Cold defense, if they wanted to.
In fact:
Fireball:
Maul is melee/smashing/negitive
Notice where it says "Attack Types"? That's what defenses that power will check against.
Fireball deals smashing damage based off the concept of concussive damage from the explosion.

Combat Jumping (from wiki)
**While active, Combat Jumping increases your Defense to all attacks, and adds resistance to Immobilization. Moderately increases your jump height and distance while providing good air control.

My question is, whats the baseline defense for these sets unlostted? Is it 3% def to all for both? Cant check in-game, and was trying to pre-plan build for I19
May end up taking them both just for the added defense, but wanted to check.
Any insight would be appreciated
