Hello all Brand New player here
Why Hello all again. Sorry for not replying for a long time. I just got done with giving all my WOW stuff to my cousin who plays and I also gave him my toons as well. Anyways now that I am done with that and finally uninstalled wow I feel like a free man and am ready to start my adventure. I am kind of wondering how I add different channels and how I find out what my Global is and I think it said that I could not Email until I was lv 10. I did go and buy the game and now have subscribed. So I should be good to go and be able to be reached in game. I will try my best to figure out how to add channels and hopefully will see some of you guys in the game. I will prob create a couple more alts on different servers once I get used to the game and gain a couple more levels on Blue.
BlueMyth
Hiya BlueMyth,
I took some time off the game due to personal reasons, and have returned recently, so a good chunk of this is new to me too. As advice from a sorta-new player to a really new player, take the time to go over all the various options screens and whatnot. There are some customization bits and pieces that might be a bit hidden or not 100% intuitive that can improve your personal experience.
For example, most of the 'drop screens' that open up like the Inspirations, the Map, etc. have a little dot in one corner. Click that dot and it 'undocks' the little window so you can move it around. I tend to do this with the map and the inspiration windows so they're always open in the corners of the screen.
Another example, in one of the 'Options' menu screens there are options that can customize the colours used for your character's word balloons.
It can seem like silly little things, but it's surprising how much difference they can make to your immersion in the game.
Welcome aboard!
It definitely sounds like you found your home.
What Father Xmas said was all true and possibly even understated.
Just hop on, play and enjoy smashing, blasting, hacking, and/or knocking enemies around and watch them fly, fall, stumble, dangle...
The community is great, the content is thick and varied and the game itself is just fun.
I guess just a little bit of info for you...
If you start making other characters, know also that there are varied ways/paths to leveling up... So, don't feel like you will always go through the exact same stuff each time.
Sounds like you're enjoying going through the Praetorian experience right now and that;s great and, obviously, has variances as you make different choices (As you've seen). So, you can get some different experiences just from starting there alone.
However, there is also Paragon City where the heroes of this world generally start. And, even there, you may go through the beginning contacts and story arcs and follow certain paths throughout your leveling "career", but some times you may skip certain contacts and story arcs, as you follow other ones and out-level things... And next time, you might end up doing things you didn't with the previous character. Plus, you can always just team up with others (Possibly even higher levels, thus missing/skipping your own contacts as you progress) and there are ways to progress just by running around and fighting enemies in the streets, in the sewers and/or just running somewhat random radio missions from your police scanner (And stopping bank robberies along the way).
And then there is also the Villain side, where you generally start in the Rogue Isles. And they have all their own contacts and story arcs and content.
And, of course, there is also player generated content that you, or others, can even tailor specifically for your own characters... story-wise or whatever thrills you most.
You don't need to take that all in now, but I thought you might like to know (In case you didn't already) that while you can absolutely enjoy this game by playing one character and one character only... If you do want to go through it mulitple times with different powersets, archtypes, moral choices, hero or villain... You'll find different content along the way that you likely did not experience previously.
Of course, you can also go through the same stuff over and over by choice, because you like those story arcs/missions so much, hehe.
Most importantly, don't feel rushed. Just enjoy your time pressing keys and playing the game. Enjoy the show... and hopefully, get a little lost in it.
And while I'd never consider trying to convince anyone of adopting any sort of playstyle that one doesn't care for, a lot of "RP" in this game is quite simply having a bit of a concept in mind for a character and enjoying watching or experiencing the action and events as though that character is going through it (Like reading a comicbook or watching a movie)... Really just a dab of make believe.
I only say that because I know role-playing can have a negative stigma attached to it... especially from what I hear about some of your previous game's role-play servers, hehe.
Still... no matter your tastes on any of that stuff... This game is fun and should have you feeling like a kid flipping through comics or playing in the backyard. Just a little, at least!
I hope you enjoy the game nearly as much as I do!
And again... welcome aboard!!
and round up everyone that knows more than they do"-Dylan

Easiest way to join channels is to right click on the chat window and choose "Join Channel", I believe (pulling this from my tired mind, at the moment). A window will open up for you to type which channel you wish to join. You'll just have to type in the exact name of the channel and you'll be set.
You can right click on the different chat windows and edit it to display different channels. And make multiple tabs to separate certain channels and switch back and forth to check things and whatnot.
Nothing to worry about, but, eventually you'll probably be interested in doing so.
And Wildclaw is right. Open up your options (easiest way is to hit \ and then the O key) and look through and see what you might like to change, both for fun and for comfort.
I don't know why the default mouse control is the way it is (Assuming it still is that way), but I was so happy when I finally inverted the mouse control (the Pitch, I think).
All in all though... I suggest not over-thinking. There are complexities, but they're rather simple once you get into them (Enhancements, the different kinds, the different tiers as you level, inventions, invention enhancement sets, standard inventions... Choosing what to slot and what to put in them and what powers to pick when... Best not to get worried about it. Learn when you want, leave it for another time when you just want to play).
And, on that note, I'll stop typing for now!

To join a channel say like the N P C global channel, down in your chat line type in...
/join_chan "N P C"
Note the spaces and the quotes, both are required.
Oh, want to see your character from the front when you're outside of the costume creator? Hold down the 'Page Up' key while holding down your right mouse button and moving. That will rotate the camera around. 'Page Down' (or 'B' as well, I think) will reset your camera position.
Hello all again. Just wanted to give you all a quick update. BlueMyth is now up to lv 5 I believe and he is on the Champion server. I have had so much fun even though champion seems to be a little too quite for my taste. Might be the time of day I am playing. I have decided to create my first alt named Deaths Menace on the Freedom server. He is a Villain of course. I am going to be switching back and forth but prob focusing on Death a little more then Blue for the time being. Both Global's are @Bluemyth and @Deaths Menace. I hope to see some of you guys in game. Until next time.

Of course, welcome to City of Heroes, the best MMO all around {then again, we're hardly unbiased}.
Since you're still on a trial account and can't use global channels, you might check out the in-game Help channel, which is basically a serverwide channel for players to answer other players' questions {or on semi-rare occasions, just chatter}. The tab for it should be in your main chat window by default, and you can talk in it using the /hc command.
PS: Come to Virtue! We have cookies. And catgirls. And the Cape Radio.
Also, simply holding down your middle mouse button and moving the mouse will pan the camera around you too - mouse wheel will zoom the camera in and out.

I was just teaming up with Someone from the N P C chat. Can't remember the name but I had a blast and I can't believe that we where teaming up at lv 2 and made it all the way up to lv 5 really fast. Was not trying to go fast as I was reading all of the quests and exploring all of the areas with everyone in the party. We where able to get 2 others to join as well and just were running through quests left and right. It was one of many blasts that I am sure to have in this game. Anyways I am going to go to bed as I got off from work a couple hours ago and need sleep. I will talk to you all a little later.

Champion has a great community and lots of server events. The best way to connect with other players on Champion is to join one of our global chat channels: either 'BMT of Champion' or 'Champions United', or both if you like. Also, check out the Champion forums to check out our community. Also, check out our Event Calendar for the times and dates of player run events.
Hope to see you around!

It should be mentioned (in all fairness) that the in-mission choices and such are a fairly new innovation and currently you're going to find most of them in praetoria (the going rogue content). Once you're popped out into either Paragon City or the Rogue Isles at level 20, right now they become a lot more rare.
They're slowly making their way into the rest of the game though as old missions are updated and new content is added which makes uses of the new technology.
But, I'll have to echo what the others have said. This MMO is probably the most casual friendly MMO out there. It's also very Solo-player friendly for the most part if that's your thing. 90% of the content is doable without a team. Maybe a little more or less depending on what Archetype you've chosen.

If you are in Paragon City or the Rogue Isles (i.e. NOT Praetoria), at level 5 you should go to the next level city zone -- Kings Row for Heroes, Port Oakes for Villains. Look in your "contacts" tab for a Detective for Heroes, a Broker for Villains. Go to that contact to get a Scanner for Heroes, Newspaper for Villains. Then do three missions from the Scanner/Paper. You will then be sent back to the Detective/Broker for a Bank/Mahem mission. See if you can get some others to help you the first time, because if you can successfully complete that mission, you get a "Raptor Pack" as a reward -- it is a jet flying pack that will let you get around much more easily until you can get a travel power.
Then go back to the Detective/Broker, and he/she will give you a new contact for missions.
This works when you are levels 5-10. At levels 10-15, you can get a "Zero-G Pack" that lets you super-jump. At levels 15-20, you can get a self-resusitate power, and at levels 20-25, you get a "team teleport" power. Characters in Praetoria do not have this option -- you can't get a Detective/Broker until you exit Praetoria after you hit level 20.
There are other ways to get a flight pack, including a recipe that can be crafted, or you can buy one from a vendor in a high-level area. You may be able to earn a flight pack from some missions, too. Most people also get a travel power. Travel powers are not "essential," but recommended unless you know how to put together an alternative way to get around.
If you want a travel power as soon as they become available, you need to take a pre-requisite power during levels 6-12, and then you can take a travel power at 14. For new players, I recommend Hover/Fly, but each of the travel power pools have a choice of two pre-requisites for each of the four travel powers. The four are Fly, Super Jump, Super Speed and Teleport. Teleport is the most difficult to use, but the others are pretty easy.
Another thing for lower level characters to understand is the need for Fitness . . . but this will be changing as soon as the next free update is published. Issue 19 (usually called I-19) will include the Fitness pool for "free." But until then, you should plan to include the Fitness Pool when you build your character. The Stamina power will increase your Recovery rate so you don't run out of endurance as much. Take Hurdle or Swift no later than level 16. Then Health no later than level 18, so you can choose Stamina at level 20. Some characters can go without Fitness or can delay it if you know how to slot your powers, but the majority of characters take Stamina by level 20 or 22.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

I have always been the type of gamer that grinds as fast and as hard as I possibly can to make it to the highest lv but I plan on changing my gaming style to slow and steady. |
Remember, CoH isn't a game about BEING a super-hero (or villain), it's about BECOMING a super-hero (or villain).
But it seems you've already embraced the "it's not the goal, it's the journey" mentality, more power to ya!
One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet - if you like to Team, take a second to set your Teaming Status Flag when you log-in.
Hit the Team tab on the top of the Chat-box area, there's a drop-down menu there, Select Looking for Team, or Looking for Any...or if you're gonna be shopping, upgrading your enhancements, etc. and don't want to be disturbed, select Not Looking for Team (just don't forget to change it later if you finish your stuff and want to team).
Players who build and lead teams regularly *DO* use the status indicators to hit-up people flagged as "Looking for..." first.
Wondering if someone could tell me the different RP servers so I can avoid them or are they listed in one of the websites that some of you guys pointed out to me.

(( Lv 20 brute lft ))
That means that the player is speaking out of character. Chat without the (( )) means that the player is in character and their speech is tailored to the personality that they are playing. For example, if the player is a pirate, he might say suggest pulling some enemies from a big mob. Usually, a non-RP player would say:
Let's pull.
The pirate player would say:
Arr, me maties, thar be many o' em. What say ye that I throw this here barrel and lure some over? Then we jump em.
I myself have roleplayed as a cybernetic villain (Mastermind with Robots). My powerset includes thermal shields. If I buff you, I will say:
Configuring firewall for <your name>.
If you die, then I can resurrect you:
Initiating reboot for <your name>. Click Accept.
If I self destruct before I level, I will tell the team not to resurrect me:
System restart in a few cycles. Will resume normal operation.
I don't mind if an RPer is on the team. If they're good, the chat is kinda interesting. I care more about that they are able to team well.
If you haven't done so, check out the guide about teaming while on trial accnt on the forums so you can find teams that can invite you.
I'm on Freedom around 8 - 12 pm PST. If you want to play a villain, make a Vill on Freedom, name it Lord BlueMyth. If you're on when I'm online, I can show you around.
Welcome to the game, BlueMyth! I also play on the Champion server. Please feel free to send me a tell @Amygdala if you'd like some company or have any questions.

i'm pretty sure Champions United is intended as a server-wide channel though. In any event BMT of Champion is an excellent channel to join if you're looking to get some serious badge acquiring done. Champions United is a bit more of a social channel and a good place to ask questions and socialize without the risk of diverting the channel from its intended purpose and incurring the possible penalties for doing so.

Once again and not to sound like a broken record here but WELCOME also!
I have played for 4+ years myself....
but I admit I am usually just too lazy to post stuff on here......
but I read it daily!
Very informative.....
very much a special community feel to the whole game.
As many people have stated also....
it is the journey to level your charachter/toons and not the destination.
This is and has been for the most part my only hobby for the last 4 years.
Like my wife used to tell me;
"It beats doing drugs....
drinking like a fish....
or beating the spouse.
And far cheaper too!"

Alright well what I have to say is that I am thrilled to get so much feedback. It seem like whenever I post something in the forums I get a response really fast and they don't stop coming. I really enjoy all of your comments and all of the new stuff that is being brought up. What my plan is to keep the game in Window mode go to COH forums and add everyone on in this topic to my friends lists. Which brings up another question. Can I only add people to my friends list who are on my same server or on any server and also is it the best way to keep in touch with everyone through friends list or is there a better way?
Another thing that I was thinking was is there any add ons for COH like through curse.com or anything like that? I really don't have any probs with the normal UI but I really like to customize whenever I have the chance too and if it makes the game more playable friendly then I am defiantly down for that. I am pretty sure that I can find most if not all of the answers to my questions in some of the websites you all have suggested but I kind of like getting perspectives from anyone who will give it and some of the questions have multiple answers where one answer may not be the best for me. I am going to make sure that I go and check out the sites though next time I get a chance.
Well I am about to go shopping for some food right now and will be back later. I defiantly plan on playing for a couple of hours tonight. I will talk to you all later and might see some of you in the COH / COV. Take care all
Bluemyth
BlueMyth,
You have two friends lists
- Server - add character names (on the current server) to the list. This is a per-character list. Use /friend <character name> to add people to the list. It does not require action/consent of the person being friended
- Global - add global handles to the list. This is a per-account list (available on all characters on the account). Use /gfriend <handle> (e.g. /gfriend @AcceleratorRay) to send a request. It requires that the person being gfriended consent to the request.
Global: @AcceleratorRay

It is a VERY USEFUL addition, as it adds all sorts of useful info to your in-game maps (badge & plaque locations, enemy groups and their levels in-zone, etc.) Just FYI it's a beefy download & install, multiple Gigs if I remember right.
But there are other helpful websites and *external* tools you'll come across as you play and read the forums. CoHPlanner & Mid's Hero Builder are just two that spring to mind.
p.s.
I am pretty sure that I can find most if not all of the answers to my questions in some of the websites you all have suggested but I kind of like getting perspectives from anyone who will give it and some of the questions have multiple answers where one answer may not be the best for me. |
