Your opinions on /Nin

Hey all,
I am a big fan of the Stalker AT first and foremost, my main is a Spines/Nin for instance, but with the release of GR I was pondering making a Praetorian version of my Spiney Stalker, seeing that I love /nin I figured I'd stick with it as a secondary, but Im curious what folks think would make a good primary?
I don't mind if it isnt huge damage, it'd be nice but not necessary, just curious what people feel works really well at the moment, I understand that km/ is pretty strong for Stalker but have no idea where to start with that pool, hense coming here.
Another, related, question is, do claws/nin Stalkers work well?

I love Ninjitsu and hope that it always remains exclusive to Stalkers. I have a EM/Nin, DM/Nin, and KM/Nin and all three are absolute beasts.

The only thing that I do not like about /Nin is the click mez protection, but otherwise there is nothing negative that can be said about Ninjitsu.

Personally I wouldn't remake a character you already have because that is repetitve in terms of primaries. You can pick just about any primary for a Stalker and get good performance out of it. I love Katana for Scrappers so I know that Ninja Blade will perform very nice and Golden Dragonfly has a very nasty critical hit. EM, DM, KM, and MA are also very good. I would have made a 4th /Nin when I did my MA Stalker, but decided to go /Regen for concept reasons and to experience a new Stalker outside of Ninjitsu.

In the end it doesn't really matter what primary you choose if /Nin is your secondary.

Oh I have no intention of remaking my stalker, just making a second one Sorry that I wasnt clear there, but thanks for your opinion, its appreciated

I'd say give Ninja Blade a try. I have a NB/Nin at lvl 42 and he's very unkillable. divine avalanche keeps you close to the softcap, most of the attacks do -DEF as a secondary effect, which allows you to slot Achille's heel: -RES in them, and it's just synergetic with the ninja theme.

the new shiny KM/ is really fun too, and has a good AoE move, plus the Tier 9 move will recharge your build up instantly if it crits randomly.

Ninja Blade is indeed a good choice with /Nin...

I have a few of those (across a few different servers) and they're very effective.

Pretty much any Primary is good with /Nin, or at very least, worth trying
if it appeals to you.

How about MA/Nin folks? I'd really like to know how it works as a whole, I'm kinda determined to make an MA toon work, but am as of yet able to land on the best way to do it.

MA works with plenty of sets if you want it to. Regen is nice, as you won't have redraw to contend with. Same thing for Nin and its heal, click mez, and other bag of goodies. The stuns in MA should complement Nin nicely, too. You can stun and knockdown a lot, which is another layer of mitigation for you that will help. Even if you get yourself to the softcap, you benefit from your enemy not trying to hit you.

What are my opinions on /Nin? Well, I only have the one and without IOs (only the Steadfast +3%), she's really squishy. The build I made for her to get her closer to the softcap only puts her within 2% of the 45 mark for melee and 5% for ranged (and AoE is abysmal). Even with all that and her tricks, I bet she'd still be knocked down really fast by some lucky hits...not to mention the build is stupidly expensive and I hate expensive builds...

Stipulations on the build: I want Mako mastery because that'll be her 'special' of my character list (I only have 1 character with Mako that's a Dom mainly for the pet). She needs all the attacks because I like having all the combos >_> Ablating needs 2 procs in it.

I knows: She doesn't have KB protection. I like not having KB protection on some characters. I had it on my Spines/DA but took it off and he's still awesome. The build isn't in the power order. I usually leave that up to what I need/want at the time or respec into it. Also, no fitness because, by the time I get to the point of IOing her, we'll get it for free...that's what that extra slot in brawl is for ^_^

I was aiming for perma-hasten (the only character I have to have such) but couldn't get even close without fudging up the defense and getting the powers I wanted.

*reads OP*

What to pair with /Nin? Probably not Dual Blades. I enjoy my DB/Nin but I often find myself using either or of their tools. I dunno why but I rarely use the trops (but they're nice to have). If I use the trops, I end up just not bothering with combos. Still don't have smoke flash so haven't tried that.

How about Kinetic Melee? Angry Citizen's favorite stalker that he proclaimed the best of the best of all of stalker-kind was a Dark Melee/Nin and having played a DM/WP, I'd probably agree to a point. Not as AoE-tastic, but a great mix of ST and utility ontop of a utility rich secondary.

I personally love /Nin, but it's not for everyone. Ninjitsu can be very effective if used correctly. In other words, if you tend to rely on toggles alone with the "toys" thrown in as value added, you're going to be disappointed.

Set bonus priorities should be ranged first, with the caveat that you take and slot caltrops.

Caltrops is one of the best melee damage mitigators in the game. Take it and use it. Use it early and use it often. STAND ON your caltrops patch. Slot it with damage procs from slow and targetted AoE sets if you want to see minions just suddenly die every now and then before they can flee the caltrops without you having to move a weapon or a fist to help them along.

Blinding powder doesn't break hide or draw aggro, and it can and should be used pre-emptively to mitigate damage from alphas. However, if you know your target won't die in one AS, then jump back before you placate and throw it out there to stack the tohit debuff with the demoralize effect. Then placate and finish the boss off.

Smoke flash isn't for me, but some will swear by it as an ambush mitigator and a panic button. Even I would tell you to try it out before making a decision.

Believe it or not, Soft-capping a Ninjitsu - while expensive -isn't cost-prohibitive. For under two hundred million and with a little patience you can do it without gimping your build. Here's one I whipped up:

You might notice two missing slots. That's because Mid's doesn't have I19 changes for fitness in there, yet, so I left two out for slotting stamina. (or one for stamina and one for health, YMMV)

I also took Retsu on a softcapped build. It does more than defense. Plus, it can come in quite handy in the face of cascading defense failures or extended AV fights where you need the recovery bonus..

However, if you wanted to skip it you could. You could even (shudder) skip it in favor of smoke flash. ;P

EDIT - Where's my head? I meant to respond as best I could to your request there, Leo, and totally forgot! Sorry - anyway:

The build looks good, but I think you can get better defense numbers while retaining the recharge bonus, I think. What do you think of this:

It might be a bit more costly than what you wanted, due to the three extra luck of the gamblers, but a few villain merits can help take care of that, yes?

Oh, and yes, there are two slots missing from this build too for stamina.

This is probably why my enjoyment of /Nin isn't what I'm seeing in everyone elses. Honestly, the whole caltrops moving stuff out of melee messes with my cones from DB. *THAT'S* why I tend to either use combos or caltrops...and I didn't even realize it until I read that. Weird >_>

I think I might actually skip Caltrops on my DB character or just slot it minimally and pull it out for groups of foes that are annoying in melee. I think I can lean on Blinding Powder more in that case but I really have to play around with it with more slots to know...

Thanks! ^^

But it's gotta have 2 procs in Ablating...that's, like...a *must* for me to fully enjoy Dual Blades Also, it kinda doesn't do much with the Mako pool, which is kinda what I wanted to explore with this build with effectiveness taking a back seat to unique and fun.

I actually wanted Spirit Shark Jaws to be her 'specialty' cause I like the animation and I already got 2 parts of the Lockdown set plus the +mag proc.

I see what you mean. I don't have a tremendous amount of experience in dual blades, but I can see how the mitigation from the combos could really devalue the mitigation tools in /Nin.

Hmm.. my next stalker after the KM/Dark was gonna be DB/Nin, but now I might have to try a different secondary.

I love a challenge! Okay, Two procs in Ablating... check! All the powers in Mako's except Summon Guardian... Check! Lockdown set in Jaws... Check! At least 45% recharge bonus outside of Hasten... Check! Softcapped to at least two positions... Check!

I skipped caltrops on this build to give you the slots necessary, and you've still got two slots left over for inherent stamina. Mid's doesn't give numbers for suppressed hide and stealth, but I THINK you might be softcapped to all three positions:

Whataya think?
Why keep touch of death in the power if you're not getting the defense bonus? The 5th bonus is just hold resist, ie meaningless. You're only getting 1.5%HP and 2.5% damage.

If you go with Mako you get same HP and 3% damage, plus higher % enhancements on the off abilities.

Crushing Blow gives you HP and Accuracy instead of damage, and you can stop at 4 and add two procs.

On the procs:
I recommend against Mako's and Touch of Death. Mako is more lethal damage and ToD is only 15% to fire. Ablating strike takes defense debuff. Lady Grey is same damage as ToD but 20% chance to fire and cheaper to buy. Plus you have the option of Achilee's Heel.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

........beeecause I only remembered that he wanted two procs in the power at the last minute and had to post and get back to work?

So yeah. Good points. 'Swhat I get for hurrying!

Since folks are posting build, does anyone have a viable, affordable build for a KM/Nin or MA/Nin toon by chance?

Posted

Without knowing what you want to do with it (ie - what app/ppp you prefer, any thematic considerations) it'll need some tweaking, but here's a softcapped MA/Nin that doesn't use purples or LotG's or PVP sets. That being said, affordable is in the eye of the beholder.

The two extra slots in Hide are reserved for the inherent Stamina, should you want to 3-slot it. Otherwise they're yours to distribute.

EDIT - just noticed I had the stealth IO in sprint - consider that VERY optional.

Thanks for the help, Joe.

Couple things though:
-Is there a reason you went so overboard with ranged defense? I know /Nin doesn't have a whole lot of -def resistance but I'd rather get better mileage out of my powers at the cost of that buffer.
-Why in the world did you slot Explosive Strike in Spirit Shark when you could get nearly the same ranged defense with Thunder Strike?
-Is there something good that happens from putting a Miracle unique in Hibernate? I've only had Hibernate on a Blaster and never got a chance to do anything special with it so I dunno. Otherwise, I'd just slot a rech IO in it and put the +recovery proc in Health.

I'm wondering if I'm just awesome or maybe there was just a lot of room to work with this build to improve. With Hide suppressed, it runs at *juuuust* over the def cap for melee, ranged and AoE by .7-1%. It also has a tad more +rech and I get to use Water Spout to put a dent in hard AVs/EBs. Maybe she'll even be able to solo them ^^ Who knows...she'll probably run out of endurance fast though.

And is there a reason you put a stealth IO in sprint? Wouldn't really do much in PvE would it?

[EDIT] added data chunk

I do tend to go overboard on ranged defense. The main reason for that is that caltrops provide so much melee range mitigation that capping ranged first tends to be enough of a priority for me. Now, I left caltrops out of that build I put up, and so the point is somewhat invalid, but I also tried to slot Touch of Deaths where possible because they tend to enhance damage a bit more than Mako's. Also, I forgot to take some of them out when I dropped caltrops. The Red fortunes were also slotted for recharge bonuses and damage bonuses.

You could probably do without some of those Touch of Deaths.

'Cause I forgot about Thunder Strike...

Yeah. It should go in Health. Actually, I was assuming that one went in health anyway but couldn't show it if I was assuming it was inherent. I just saw the empty slot in Hibernate and thought, "What the heck?"

Nice build! I might have to steal some ideas from it.

Yeah - I started from an old build that happened to have that IO in stealth and forgot to take it out. Did that in several posts.

Agreed wholeheartedly. I often think of other secondaries for my stalkers, but I always get drawn back to /Nin. It has great protection and such neat toys.

Thanks

Anyone happen to have an Elec/Nin softcap build? By any chance, I'm going to try & put one together, but I figured i'd ask around first.
