Im a pretty new player to CoH. What I am looking for is a character build that is good for solo play any ideas?

Katana/Regen or Katana/WP scrapper for heroes
Any MM combinations for villains
For Praetorians - same as above

Brutes are also highly soloable redside; Willpower is a good place to start for secondary, Super Strength is a good primary to pair with it. I would avoid Dual Blades as a beginner since it uses a unique combo system.

Bots/Dark is an excellent combo for Masterminds. Like Fury said, most MMs are pretty good, although Bots and Thugs are the high performers. I haven't played it personally, but Bots/Force Field is supposed to be easy mode.

Since you're new, I can understand why you might want to see/use someone's pre-existing build. But I think what *most* folks will say is that the beauty of this game is the flexibility of building a toon to fit YOUR playstyle.

Just start tinkering.

Go to the Archetype forums (a little further down), and read up.

Check out Mid's Hero Designer .

Tinker some more.

Play.

Also consider checking out the Player Guides section - I'd recommend starting in the Guide to Guides.

Most good guides include at least one proven successful build.

But even if there isn't, just reading through the guide might help put you on the right path.

I agree with most of the others: melee archetypes (AT's) like Scrapper, Tanker, Brute are generally easier to play right-out-of-the-box. You'll then find that certain powersets and powerset combinations have their ups and downs in survivability and aesthetics. Generally though, the game is set up so ANY powerset combination of any archetype should be able to solo -- just not as easily or at as high of a difficulty level as the melee'ers can do it.

Personally, I liked learning the game as a Blaster. In the grand scheme of things, sure I was squishy, but it forced me to learn a little more strategy than if I was a Spines/Regeneration Scrapper (normally I'd say "no offense to the spines/regen scrappers", but, what the hell, you know you had it easy).

Hope you also don't deprive yourself from a lot of teaming. It's fun to see how different AT's and powersets interact with each other once you really get going.

Later on, you might find that you like solo'ing with a Defender, Controller, or Corruptor even more than with a melee'er. They just require a little more finesse.

Start out by just making a character and playing. Pick anything that looks like fun. Go through the Tutorial and read everything.

As others have said, a Scrapper or Brute is a good one to start with. But feel free to try out the other ATs. I started with a Katana/Regen scrapper. Then my Ice/Ice Blaster was my first one to get Fly. Then I made an Invuln/Axe tank. Then a Dark Miasma/Elec Defender -- I thought I had found my favorite with the Defender. Then I made an Illusion/Radiation Controller to be a sidekick for the Defender . . . and I liked the Ill/Rad so much, he became my main character and my first one to 50. On the way, I made lots of other characters.

If you don't like it, delete it and start another. If you like it, keep it around and still start another. Take a look at the Guides for hints on good powers and how to make your character better, but be careful . . . many of the guides are aimed at max, end-game characters instead of leveling up.

As most people have said melee toons are easiest to grasp starting off. I usually suggest Scrappers or Brutes due to them being less squishy and fairly high damage. Tankers aren't bad, but personally find their damage a little lower since they are intended to be the ones taking the brunt of attacks, but if that's what you like go for it.

Masterminds are fun, and easy once you know the game, but for a player just starting off, its a lot to take in on your first exposure and aren't for every one.

Stalkers are melee but still a bit squishier than scrappers, tanks, and brutes, but have a bit of additional strategy with their hide and assasin strikes for high damage.

Blasters aren't bad, but are fairly squishy, but very high damage. Basically ranged glass cannons.

Each class has their own strategy and can be very fun. And there is nothing wrong with making a lot of toons and trying them all out, in fact its recommended.

You almost have to try to make a completely gimped build in this game and nearly every combo is pretty effective at something. Some more than others of course, but everything can contribute especially on a team.

Check the various sections on the forums for specific advise for each AT and which sets are best, but if you're just starting off, just pick what you think looks fun and cool. You can always make more. Also look at MIDS if you really want to tweek your build. Link was posted above somewhere. But as said before, the main thing is to have fun!

just roll a scrapper or brute and play around.
they're all survivable and fun and the most entertaining part of any new game is seeing how stuff works by messing around with it.

What you'll find is there are very few guides/builds written for "as you level" That's because almost anything works. Pointing you to existing guides that are built around being level 50 and having money to spend on sets and enhancers won't help you.

Actually, I think it's because people who write guides are clueless - they're 50, they've been 50 for a quite some time and they've forgotten what it's like to not be a 3-year or 5-year vet, or to not be someone with 50 million inf who knows how to make another 50 million any time they want. I'm not necessarily any better, and probably I'm worse.

There are some general "levelling up" build hints in my frankenslotting mini-guide; maybe those will help?

So you think you're a hero, huh.

Hey Lemur Lad's back!

Haven't seen much of you lately, welcome back! (in fact a little digging shows your last post before this past weekend was 3 months ago)

How've the rafters been treating you?

The new player guide is exactly the approach I took with my first 20 levels guide for Invuln; and I agree that we need a lot more good basic guides for various powersets. Hmm, I'll have to think on this a bit; I have a decent familiarity with quite a few diverse powersets across all the AT's. Maybe I should jot down something for a few of them along the same lines.

The upcoming change to Fitness in the next issue will certainly throw a fairly sizeable monkey wrench into anything written for today's game though.
