Red Ring Q

I was wondering... I am thinking about buying the new Xbox "slim".

So anyways, I was wondering if the red ring of death is no more. I heard its no longer an actual red ring but a red dot, but still, is it still occuring or has it been fixed?

I've been trying to find this out for myself but there doesnt seem to be a lot of info on it. I am also hoping that asking this doesnt get me banned or whatever since I am unsure about the "new" forum rules for this section.

But in the end, I trust my fellow CoH players and respect and rely on their opinion when I can't find what I need myself. So since I don't know where else to go, I am asking here.

So does anyone know?

Probably against the rules.

I haven't had an RROD in.. coming up on two years. I think their later generations of regular consoles have pretty much managed to fix the design flaw that led to RROD.

The RROD thing has pretty much been fixed, in not just the slim but most other Xbox types.

Just uh, be careful when moving it

Um it hasn't been fixed. Where the heck can you get the idea you can permanently fix a hardware issue like that. It is like windows saying BSOD is fixed with every release of windows.

No red ring isn't fixed in fact several of the ones people got from the slim announcement were red ringed when they first turned them on. I Cite Angry Joe, he went to the announcement and got his then turned it on and guess what it was red ringed. All they have done is added fans, which helped with the aspect that red ring can be from overheating. And that in some models they actually removed the red LED. They have gone the route we don't care to hear this issue anymore lets make them not be able to tell it is happening.

And no I am not flaming anyone other then Microsofts bad Practices. Can you tell I have been screwed by them to much. Check youtube there are lots of videos there of it happening.

Then of course there are people like me that had one of the original 360s and it never RROD. It did get taken out by an E error. Though, I'd had it for several years. Got an Elite now.

Yeah only 1 of my friends are as lucky as you. He still has his Day 1 360 and it is running perfectly. It is annoying. He is lucky with consoles. Real lucky.

And yet I have personally seen over 10 red rings of every model. My brother has a real bad luck with his original 360, literally has replaced every part in it one at a time cause of failures. Then a friend who bought every version of 360 when they came out. After awhile they each ended up with a RROD. Though the Elite it is rare. I am not saying the slim is going to RROD on everyone. It is rare but at day one it is happening. You can't permanently fix a hardware error like that. Things come DOA it just happens, hello Hard Drives.

Oh and I am not a PS3 fanboy. Friends and brother has one. I don't give a bleep about either of them really. I like my computer, if I want to play a console game that is what friends are for. I just hate microsoft so anything they make makes me have something against it already.

Yeah, the hardware defect that caused 98% of RRODs was fixed back in '07 or '08, though since that particular defect (present only in the first few manufacturing runs) will always cause RROD eventually, RRODs can be repaired free of charge within three years, warranty or no warranty (this is from experience, I had no warranty, and they even sent me the boxes in which to ship the 360 so that I didn't even have to pay for shipping).

The rare case of RROD these days is generally experienced by anonymous people on the internet.

My buddy had his "slim" for less than a week before it crashed. Can't remember if he said it just wouldn't turn on, or if it was a RROD though. By the same token I have one of the original white ones that I got back when Halo 3 came out and have only had two issues with it, one being a RROD.

(Side note, the new rules are crap. There have been several occasions lately I've wanted to ask a video game question, or have a discussion on one and the remember "oh right, we can't do that anymore".)

Yeah, there's been a few times when I've wanted to discuss the latest news from a hotly anticipated Star Wars property with folks here, but we can't. The new rules really toad the wet sprocket.

Goodbye, I guess.

That's because the smaller version of any item is inherently inferior to the original (except in the case of cars, where it's reversed).

It's youtube, never read the comments... ever. You'll regret it every time.

I've not run into the RROD on my xBox, although I have had the transformer powerbrick overheat and needed to be replaced. Which they did free of charge. It was annoying, but I've had bricks burn out on a variety of equipment, so it wasn't completely unexpected. We have a lot of brown-outs at our place due to an old distribution grid in the area. We're picking up UPS units to clean the power into the various electronics, but we can't afford enough of them to cover every electronic device in the house.

Anyways... back on topic...

Yeah, I've seen several of those videos but when I googled about the new Slim, I don't find anything, which is why I was asking here.

The reason is because I currently have an elite and the other problem with it, is it freezes once every few months. Or has. Its inconsistant.

Anyways, I always wanted one of the limited edition halo xboxs and apparently Halo Reach is the last halo... at least last one that Bungie is making.

I greatly fear selling my current one, buying this new one and getting home to have a red dot of death.

On the warranty issue. They no longer fix them unless you have a warranty. Another reason I am scared. Only Xboxes bought before X date can be sent it within 3 years. Otherwise you have a one year warranty and can buy extended in some places.

So no one here, themselves, has had any trouble with a Slim, yet?
