I'd be willing to bet that the reason this has never been done is due entirely to the amount of UI work involved.
I would be insanely happy if they at lest gave us a few canned sets to pick from. You know like Bots might have Classic Bots, Sleek Bots, Magic Golems, and the such.
Not looking for full control just a drop down with some options would make me happy.

As a bot MM I would love to be more of a scavenger - Rikti drones for my battle drones, Council metal men for my protectors and so on.
It'd also be neat to be able to use the Sky Raider Force Field Generator for the /Traps ability, too.
I'd be willing to see some Malta options for Bots. Not the Malta Blue(tm) Titan skin though, some color customizable options. I'd love to see a Bots/Thermal with red/orange Titans running around on fire. Maybe some Yakuza-style options for Thugs, and some less stereotypical Ninja henchies. No Naruto, though. *shudder*

And speaking of which... aren't some phantom army pets women? It kinda goes back to the "why can't we have some minions be female?" debate. Hellions have integrated new women bosses (thugs). We see women serving in arachnos and in longbow (mercs). The new Clockwork (bots).
I'm not saying there won't be people making "pimp MMs," but if female phantoms are allowed to be conjured up and fight alongside male phantoms, why can't we have a random arsonist or medic be a gal? Seems to me that regardless which camp you're on about this issue, it's already in the game.
All girl sets (ala knives or carnies)? That's another story.

I'd be satisfied with a really limited customization set. Can't use the 'but idiots would play pimps' excuse if your choices for female merc costumes are desert camo, jungle camo, or dress uniforms. I'd love a female thug or two, and if they have the same clothing options as the guys, that's perfectly fine with me -- I just want to have all my thug-herder's rowdy friends wear his gang colors.
Basically, pet customization would work just fine if they were given limited costume options. Sorta like the widow/solder AT's start with.
First, though, I want to see pets stop switching faces every time you go through a door, and dropping dead whenever you dismiss them.
