I'd emphasize this.

A LOT of folks only ever saw the hack job version that was broadcast on American television. Where they severely butchered the show, editing and sanitizing anything that might possibly have the slightest controversy.

So, it's not unusual for many folks to have a bad opinion of this show.

I have to say I agree with the people who say that One Piece was not a visually appealing anime/manga series to me. Because of that I refused to watch it when it was being shown on cartoon network or read any of the manga chapters. I also was a bit intimidated by the idea of watching or reading a series that I was so far behind on because that's a large time investment.

I decided to give it a chance in April and I have to say the series was engrossing enough to me that I see past the art and appreciate it for what it is: A vast, engrossing world with many endearing characters, antagonists and storylines. I honestly can say at this point that without the art being the way it is, it just wouldn't be One Piece.

My problem with One Piece is that my first experience with it was the original English dub. Yes, that one. And no matter how much better it's supposed to be when done properly, I just can't bring myself to watch it. That said, even that was better than DBZ....

Dragonball Z is awesome.

Just needed to be said to balance out all the hate.

Similarly with me. Once it started streaming on Hulu I gave it shot and fell in love. Especially after hearing Buggy the Clowns dub voice(FUNimation not 4Kids). The VA is Mike McFarland and he does an imitation of Mark Hamil's Joker, but more gruff sounding.
I'm up to episode 125 and own volumes 14-28(26 is in the mail though...) of the manga.

Black backgrounds on EVERYTHING, animated GIFs all over the place, blinky letters, etc.

This, by the way, was an off-topic post.

Continuting the off topic ness...the 80's had no web design. We had 900 baud modems Kermit and BBs' and we were grateful.

You mean "refugee from the 90's."

The 4kids version is so bad that I only watched 2 episodes to see how bad it was. Currently watched 463 episodes of it and 597 chapters of it and while there are better animes, Code Geass comes to mind, it is the best long running anime.

The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.

Dammit, leave me alone, I'm old.

Should I start bringing up stuff from the 70s and earlier?

You know, while I like the Funimation VAs, generally speaking, I can't watch any episode featuring Kazuki Yao in English. He's just so great as Bon Clay, the guy doing it in English can't compare, unfortunately. Eiichiro Oda liked him so much that the character of Franky was designed specifically to give him a permanent spot on the cast (well, Oda figured they needed a new crew member anyway, but he made sure that Yao was the only choice for the role).
