Union Cathedral of Pain recon run 1

Well I'm pleased to be able to say that we completed the Cathdral of Pain Trial on Union for the very first time tonight with around 5 minutes to spare! This was our third try and our most problematic when it came to being able to complete the first half of the raid. Every other time we were able to sync up the pillars with no problems but this time it just went horribly wrong and it took us 45 minutes to actually take them down, and only with a bit of luck at that .

With 10 minutes to go (roughly) we moved into the second part of the raid and we cleared the mobs as usual and managed to get the AV down to half health. Then we cleared the mobs again and managed to get the AV down to 25% health that time. This was when everyone wanted to start to believe that we could actually do this! We had a person or two quit team out of frustration during the first stage but suddenly we actually had a chance at completing it! We cleared the mobs again and we managed to complete the trial with, I'm told, about 5 seconds before the AV's shield came up again.

Man that was an absolutely epic finish and I'm proud to be part of the teams that managed to complete it for the first time.

Below is a list of the people that took part and below that are a couple of pictures I took of the finishing victory shot.

Team 1

1 - Polyphony (@Soul Storm) (Sonic debuff)
2 - Kassroll (tank)
3 - Ejecutora dark (-regen debuff)
4 - Pirea (debuff troller)
5 - Piromana (kinetics)
6 - Li sensei (scrapper)
7 - -Lady Arrowhead (blaster)
8 - Fortunata Kulenkov (-regen/dmg)

Team 2

1 - Tsumiju zero (scrap)
2 - Flints (ice tank)
3 - Mindtrip (-regen debuff)
4 - Estelita verde (debuff)
5 - Exploding boy (kinetics)
6 - Miss firestarter (blaster)
7 - Isuki (archery blaster)
8 - Patebringer (scrapper)

Team 3

1 - Tamedragon (fire tank DMG)
2 - Mac attack (invuln tank)
3 - Ultimate damz (debuff/heal)
4 - Frigid brigitte (-regen)
5 - not2sweet (scrap)
6 - Sonia Startrail (pb - dmg)
7 - Prince masterful (blaster) (left before end)
8 - Tancred sunstorm (pb - dmg)

Absolutely fantastic job there should be another one soon and it'll be smoother.. I hope

Gutted about that given all your effort, however all the more reason to kick that fat cheap broken AV's backside AGAIN!
I'll be back, since being in that Hamidon Tank team, I really want to give that Aspect a reason to hate me, and all the toys and trouble we bring along.

I got the reward though, I've also gotten more knowledge and data on tanking the pillar mobs, most notable is that there is a specific sound that the cube makes before the first mob spawns below it, seems to be about a half-second delay, the sound is made when the first mob is formed, but it doesn't become active/aggressive for about a second. (And from what I've seen, the first mob to spawn is always an eyeball.)

It's also worth pointing out that if you keep aggro and stay in a tight ball under it when the detention field hits, you're immune to all damage and unable to attack, but you'll maintain aggro until the last tick wears off (about 13/14 seconds for Ice, although I believe its close to 2 seconds for willpower) I didn't have any breakfrees and it seems that I was unable to be targeted for Clear Mind, so Tanks should carry a stack of them and save some for the second phase, as wisps exist there also and could cause a wipe.

From whats been seen/said, it seems that HVAS and Shivans work well on the Red AV (I did see a dead snowman though) so unless they don't change the purple AV, we'll need to gather some data on how to take that one down.

Also this was the team that destroyed a pillar before the shield could come back up.

So there's probably some high resistance on the pillars that could be debuffed as well a requirement for AoE to bring shields down.

The pillars don't necessarily have to have high resist, -resist has just as big an effect of big lumps of HP with +resist. and with Kinetics, Dark Miasma, Radiation and Sonics on the team, we had a LOT of -resist and +damage to throw at things.

I was proud of our team, once we got over the learning curve, we were handling things pretty smoothly, beat up rularuu, clear natterlings from Pillar, damage pillar or wait as appropriate. No moaning in team chat, nobody getting ratty, just getting on with the job as best as we could.

And yes, we sort of ate through our pillar a few times while the team were learning what was needed, and when things just didn't work out with people accidentally overlapping attacks at the thing or just poor luck.

a) Keeping pets the hell away from the pillar is pretty damn essential.

b) DoT effects can take a pillar down if you get too close to the lower end of its health bar.

c) The rularuu spawns from the cube are annoying as hell, when one of them decides to bugger off on a sightseeing tour and means you take 20 seconds to track it down and drop the shield. This, I think aggravated the sync/coordination problems we were having.

d) Seeing 'Take them down' in Broadcast and then doing so, only to see other pillars still up when the shields reform can test your sanity a little.

e) If we'd could have cut it any finer against the AV, I'm not sure how. There were about 5 seconds left on the shield down time that we got him in. Although there *was* plenty of time to get the shield down again.

Nicely done all, for sticking with it. Enjoy the temp powers if you chose to receive one, I got [The Perfect Eye].

I also had -regen on blaster (Miss Firestarter) in drain psyche.

Don't know about other people experience, but on 3 tries I had - 2 that took more then 30 minutes in first phase had red AV and one where we finished first phase in few minutes have purple. Probably just coincidence.
Red is so much easier then purple one that have tornado and spam ice rains and blizzards all over.

Still need badge on my main scrapper, so will join one of next tries.

Anyone planing CoP on red side?

We're currently discussing a redside CoP attempt on Sunday, although depending how many people we can get pencilled in we may be moving the date to in the week (This Tuesday is the Tanker Tuesday EU, Wednesday being MSR, so it might even be a Thursday attempt again if people need a week to get organised/bring toons across.)

I'll be taking one team in on my red defender, I know @Pillbug said he'd be willing to supply the base, I'll be talking to him Friday to see if we can get everything sorted out.

Might have to squeeze a MSR Saturday for HVAS, but I don't really see that being a problem for Union

EDIT:
Canine, I was more impressed at that teams power, and by the looks of things the triple-spawn seemed to be some sort of bug, but I guess we won't know untill we try again.

A redside base is a non-issue. I can rejig my Villainous base easily to be raid enabled if you want, There's several million reserve prestige waiting to be used up.

Kudos to all who stuck it out til the end.

As for a redside CoP I'll be sorting my solo sg out so we can do one soonish as long as Tsu leads it again

Yeah not to mention we had someone rage quit our team while we were getting the double + triple spawns

If im honest, once we got to about 20 minute mark i thought it was a no go and was just going to stick it out for more data to be collected. However seeing Rularuu's health drop that fast did make me go WE CAN DO THIS!

Sometimes the best kind of raids are the ones with the most chaos

[had a great time though, and thanks for the rare badge/temp power ]

To be honest once Flints and I moved across to the pillar that was struggling and noted the immediate improvement I though to myself "damn if we could have done the pillars faster even if we got the Purple AV we'd be allright" but when I saw the Red version had spawned I went all tingly as I knew it was looking good!

I did note your cry of "WE CAN DO THIS" though hehe, I have to apologise for putting doubt in your mind in the first place

all in all though I was VERY pleased it went well and amusingly I learned just as much in terms of attack data as I did for the last two raids combined! So I'm hoping subsequent attacks will be just as successful!!!

I'm betting he/she is now headdesking for leaving when they did. Even if things look bad see it through til the end cause you never know, plus the whole thing only lasts an hour :P

Oh and btw Tsu, my vill side base is CoP ready if you need one

There's another Redside base set up and ready for the trial.

I spent about an hour fiddling about in the base last night, so there's a second option for you if needed.

speaking of bases, was the additional space in the main room and the balcony setup ok? did it look rubbish/work well etc? It was noted it was too cosy in the base first time, so I made some more room!

I ran another 2 attempts tonight. The first one we had a purple version of the AV and we struggled so much and just couldn't do it, trying many different tactics. We tried a second time and got the Red AV (still don't know what triggers Red/Purple) which we managed to slowly whittle down and so Union got its second CoP Raid success!

Thanks to Mini-Nukette, Nightshade, Salacious and Electronuts for help with team leads.

Below is the group pic for second successful raid...

I'm there! Hiding, but I'm there!

Looking at the stats we did have him hit the -regen cap of 0hp/sec a few times, without him being that low (on the attacks we didn't floor it) we were simply out of time with his regen, once we had gotten the hang of it, the mobs went down at a good speed and he was lowered to 0hp/sec in two attack phases, having him drop completely.

Discussing with Soul at the moment, the best attempt at the big ol' purple is to hit him with enough holds for 50 mag, we'll have to run some tests and we'll definately need a few Domis for that to try and smooth out the issue with having too much debuffers/buffers.

Another idea I'm suggesting (as stats seem to say he has 0 immob resistance) would be to pull him against the wall, have him immob'd before the shields come up so the slow effect and the -tohit doesn't prevent us from killing the mobs.

Thats the spirit guys!

I'll be happy to take some teams in again this week and perhaps get a redside attempt going via one of the offered bases!

Immobilisation of the Purple AV is a possibility, however I've found him difficult to move given the number of people involved. However it would theoreticially be possible to use the first occasion on which the shields go down for a tank with healing backup to try and move him then, as once the AV is fully engaged the Willforge spawns will pretty much automaticially go for the raid party and at that point controlling the situation will be difficult.

Question from last night though (apologies I couldn't attend) was the attack initiated against a single Willforge like the one on Saturday (just checking the strategy behind that still applies) and when encountering the Purple AV did the entire raid party engage at melee range or was a melee and range formation used?

We tried the first stage 2 ways; holding at 30 which worked but also tried taking them down in one go which also worked.

In the second stage we tried all sorts, tries a team per cube and working as a big group. The big group worked because we needed buffs to survive (too many buff/debuff) but we were too slow so found it difficult to take shield off wc. Sped up in time though. Second run again worked as a big unit which worked well as long as we all took groups at same rate.

The trick definitely seemed to be staying as one group and taking down the respawns quickly. Once we got into the rhythym of it, his shield was back down before he had regenerated fully. Big aoe damage is the key I think.

As for the storm guy, it seems a completely different team set up would be needed. Not being able to go to melee certainly cuts down the damage I could deal on my blaster. A lot of defence debuffs might mitigate the worst bit of hurricane I think.

Judging by this post http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=238947 you can alt during CoP, so maybe if we get Purple we can change teams during CoP - switch to ranged instead of melee and similar? Also if someone quit, other can replace him like in regular team.

Since CoP is not like other TF's (trials) where you are stuck with what you get at the start maybe some strategy can be made based on that?

Purple AV have Ice Storm, Freezing rain and Blizzard (and of course Hurricane) and that can be big problem if you have to be closer to AV for -regen (Poison Trap, Drain Psyche).

Also thanks for 2nd successful run. Can I join next time (blue side) on my scrapper?
