I'm sure after 10 years as Clark Kent and a failed movie or two, he realized that this is the best gig he's ever going to have. My guess is he squeezed them for whatever $$ he could get to put on the suit, because he's always going to be "that guy who played Superman" anyhow.

I'd much rather of had Tom Welling on the silver screen than Brandon-whats-his-name.

I thought Routh did just fine for what he was given, and at least he's shown to be willing to expand to villainous and comedic roles. While I think Welling has the right look, he's still kinda in the Tribbinani School of Acting where he pulls the standard soap opera "try to divide 232 by 13" look all the time.

I dont mind them having to come up with a story for doomsday, it would be pretty much a show up and fight otherwise since his first appearance in comics were pretty bare bones. But as has been mentioned, its never the IDEA on smallville that is the problem, its the eventual execution. Brianiac they have done an ok job with. Otherwise it seems pretty much a show of the bad guy, with a cliff hanger, then some crap *** way he gets out of the mess.

For doomsday the ultimate battle with the one foe that has technically beat superman was a 30 second 3 punch fight. The first appearance of zod was basicly a possesion of Luthor, the second was IMO kinda anti climactic also. Im I was more intrested in the "They are not candorians" then i was clark falling with the blueK in his chest.

Ultimately smallville needs to realize their is no drama in setting up a cliffhanger with an unbeatable hero being beat. We know that isnt going to stick. They should have just tied up the zod story line once and for all and then the cliff hanger should have been speculation about what is to come next season.

for the show it worked, but i prefer Doomsday in the comics being pretty much the mindless (or at least pure animal instinct) engine of destruction crafted by Kryptonian science. Bloom/Doomsday smacked too much of shoehorning an evil Hulk into Smallville, and having him be Zod's son on top of that felt pretty weak.

but then the only thing i think they did right in using Zod in Smallville was back when he was a disembodied whatever and took over Lex for a little bit. But as in all things, they pussed out on giving us an actual throwdown because they spent all their money on soap opera shots and no money trying to find a fight choreographer.

Shoehorning an evil Hulk into Smallville was no worse than shoehorning an evil Hulk into Superman comics. I quite liked the Zod-Ursa angle because it made his opposition to Clark more personal, and better villains always make it personal.

I think that is a misconception.. the Internet folks taged that on Tom. There is no where were Tom stated he DIDN'T want to be superman or be called Superman. Hell in season 2-3 he had an interview with Carson Daily saying that others were calling him Superman and he even interviewed to be in the Superman Movie (that would have cancelled Smallville in Season 3 if he took it but due to scheduleing conflicts he had to turn it down because of the show). .. here is the video of it

If he did not want to be superman then why interview for it? or take the role of Clark Kent.. he simply didn't want to rush into superman.

Now that he has a background in being a director and producer and other movie roles.. he probably feels more comfortable now than he did back when he was wet behind the ears sort of speak.

I can agree with you there, it did add a bit of depth to the character that was missing in the comics.

I watched the first 4 or 5 episodes of the first season of this show and gave up on it. I always figured it was marginal enough to get cancelled after its first or second season. Who knew it'd hang on this long?

Maybe in a few decades I'll download this entire show into my brain using some kind of "instant-brain-downloader" machine just so that I can have the "experience" of it without having to waste the time watching 10 whole seasons worth the old-fashioned way.

Smallville has been a mixed bag. If you don't get all caught up in the "if it ain't exactly according to the comic, it is WRONG!" frame of mind and accept it as its own variation, then it definitely has some good stuff. Some of the best? John Schnieder and Annette O'Toole as the Kents. Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, and Jon Glover as his father. It was great to see appearances by Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder. I have always liked Allison Mack's Chloe Sullivan, a character created only for the show. Many of the DC characters have shown up, and Green Arrow has been a long-time regular. Michael McKean has had a good few guest spots as Perry White, but there were some significant changes to the character (like a romance with Martha Kent). (McKean and O'Toole are married in real life.)

Erica Durrance is, in my opinion, the best portrayal of Lois Lane in any movie or TV version of Superman. Laura Vandervoot made a great Supergirl. Zoltana was excellent. They had appearances by a young Flash, Aquaman, Black Canary and the League of Super Heroes from the future.

Kristin Kreuk's Lana Lang is generally hated by most folks who have watched the show. The show made her far too important and she became the focus of a lot of dumb storylines and a whole lot of emo crap. A lot of the writing got pretty dumb for a while in the middle seasons, but then got better in the last two or three seasons. The two hour "Justice Society" episode was really quite good. James Marsters as Brainiac has been good. I haven't especially liked the actor playing Zod. Doomsday was a lot of build up with a disappointing conclusion -- mainly due to budget limits, I suspect. I think the last season will have mostly good stuff, with the budget limiting the special effects.
