freeware photo editor?

All,

After a hard drive crash, my old version of Photoshop is gone. And since we moved a few years back, I cannot find the installation discs.

Does anyone know of a decent piece of freeware pho-editing software? Mostly all I need is the ability to crop and resize. Adjusting brightness/contrast would be nice too. I'd search the new myself, but I'm concerned about picking up trojans and viruses and other sorts of malware from unfamiliar sites.

Thanks in advance.

The version of Microsoft Paint (mspaint) in Windows 7 is actually fairly decent (although cropping still sucks).

If you want more, though, you might want to check out the Gimp (yeah, wonderful name, huh?) and Paint.Net. I've never used Paint.Net, but have heard wonderful things about it. I've used the Gimp a fair bit, and it's UI is fairly similar to Photoshop (in the most primitive, crappiest sense of the word), but it's pretty feature packed for something free (and Free).

Little bit more on the Gnu Image Manipulation Program. A couple years back one of the guys from Attack of the Show created a hack of the GIMP's ui to resemble photoshop: http://www.gimpshop.com/

The hack is quite old now having been based off of GIMP 2.1 and 2.2.

That hasn't been the only effort to make GIMP more usable to the average user. There's also been GimPhoto: http://www.gimphoto.com/ Gimphoto is also out of date having been built against GIMP 2.4.

One of the reasons these hacks haven't really been updated is due to the GIMP developers trying to rework the interface. GIMP 2.6 was a huge step forward in terms of usability over 2.4.

That interface will change yet again in GIMP 2.8. Some of those changes can be tried now in the developmental branch: GIMP 2.7; http://www.gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.7.html

As far as I am aware though there is no binary build of GIMP 2.7 for windows yet. Theoretically one should be able to compile the source code and get it to run... but whether or not it will run well is just a guess.

Gimp is an excellent piece of software, but for quick and simple edits like you mention here, I usually use Irfanview. While it is technically a photo viewer, it has plenty of simple editing ability.

Photoscape. I prefer it to Gimp and Paint.Net. It does what Office Picture Manager can do and a lot more.

I use it to create posters for the local cat charity. Great free program.

Paint.NET is GREAT. Use it all the time for basic stuff at work and for home stuff. Used to use photoshop and indesign to put together magazines and paint.net is very very similar in how it works. Its basically free photoshop light and its regularly maintained and updated as well. Whenever I have to restage a machine, its one of the first things I always download back onto a machine just because its so useful. You get layers, effects, adjustments. For what you said about just wanting to crop, resize, and brightness/contrast adjustments, it will do all of that and more easily.

For batch resizing, I have a different program that is specifically for it that works very well. Can't think of the name of it off the top of my head. Will update when I get home, but batch resizing is about the only thing Paint.Net doesn't do well.

I've been quite happy with Paint.net but Photoscape looks fantastic. Thanks for that.

Paint.net is great.
GIMP is imo more powerful but less friendly.

As also said above, irfanview is good enough for most peoples needs.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Just use http://www.picnik.com/

Simply upload your photos and edit from there. It's free and is actually very nice for retouching photos.

Crop, cut & paste (perfect for ctrl-v'ing a screenshot of your enhancements screen), resize (including batch), image flipping, add text, adjust color balance and gamma, some basic image effects (emboss, blur, that sort of thing), etc., etc... And all so much quicker and easier to do than in Photoshop or GIMP.
