Okay... so what's the issue? Has the download slowed down to an incredibly low amount? If it's been like that for a while, you could just close the Updater and restart it, and it should speed up.

If your previous motheroard melted down, wasn't the hard drive still intact? You might be able to just connect it to the new system as a secondary drive and just copy the CoH directory that way.
...especially given that most stores no longer carry the MA DVD expansion.

I continue to see it on store shelves all over the place. Odd that your local stores do not carry it. However, I can't really comment about the rest as all the ideas I would've had have been suggested.

I have been away from the game for a month because I was on vacation with my family. Shortly before I left, my PC had a meltdown that forced me to get a new computer. I bought a computer that was a huge upgrade in specs from the one I previously owned, and had to dl the client from scratch because I bought the game (the installation CD's) before Issue 3 went live.
The game should be EASY to download. I could not find it in box form in any store within 50 miles of my house. My only option was to download it. What is the future of the game when you have to employ tricks to get in on your PC? Is this supposed to attract new players?

Do you actually think this is ok? |
I do agree that the updater has some glitches, but IMO it's still better than WoW's in my experience (with CoX's updater, I've always been able to just start it then forget about it for a good while... with WoW's, I have to click 'accept' and 'next' a few hundred thousand times to download every single minor and major patch since the game was created!). I wouldn't mind seeing a rewritten updater, and I've actually been tinkering with completely replacing it, but part of the problem seems to be with the updater server, as well as the upstream ISP.

No, you were just fairly vague about what was wrong. Still haven't gotten any clarification to possibly help you beyond wild guesses.

My point was that installing the game easily should be among the highest priorities of the dev team. We are not Wow. We just don't have that player-base. If it is hard to dl CoH, players won't last past the 12+ hours to dl the game. They will leave before Outbreak. That concerns me for the future of the game.
I have a lot of respect for your posts in the forums, and I feel awkward jousting with you about this. This is not an anti-CoX rant, it is a legitmate frustration about not being able to download CoX as easily on my computer as I can other files. Cox is not inferior, but the dl process sure makes it feel as such.

I think I speak for all of us when I say "WHAT EXACTLY IS HAPPENING."
You've been asked for clarification a couple of times now, and have yet to get a response as to what exactly your issue is.
So far, we know that you had a slow download of the sound.pigg file. What is your connection speed? Are you aware that the sound.pigg file ALONE is more than 300mb in size and is the largest file in the install? You do understand that CoX has absolutely no control over your connection speed or the connection speeds of the internet between you and the download server?
It is all well and good that you want to rant and vent, but we honestly cannot help you if you can't provide basic info such as what exactly your problem is.
Also if it took you 12+ hours to download that seems to me like you are on a slow connection. I too recently bought a new computer after my comp crashed. I thought I had a back up and unfortunately I didn't. So I downloaded and it took less than 2 hours. That was at work while we were also uploading large files to an FTP site on a shared wireless connection.
I am thinking this is more the exception than the rule, otherwise we'd see many more rants.
So what kind of connection do you have? Are you on a wireless modem? Do you share that modem with others? Does it have a firewall that could have thrown up a red flag in the middle? Tell us a little about your new comp... These are things the gurus here could use to help narrow down the problem, if that's what you really are looking for.

Just wanted to clarify a bit and update.
First off, the download did finish sometime in the middle of the night. I am back in CoH/V after three weeks off and it is great to be back.
My computer specs are as follows:
Intel i7 860 at 2.8GHz
8 GB RAM
1.5 TB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon 5850
I was downloading from a wireless connection N 2.4/5 Router, and my connection speed is variable but averages about 65 MB/s according to the staus screen. I have a laptop and two iPhones also connected to the router, but only one of those was on and active during the download.
What was very frustrating to me (and I apologize for letting my frustration get the better of me--this is a forum to discuss fixes not to post rants), is that the speed while downloading the Sounds.pigg file would slow down to 0.0 kb/s and stay there for several minutes at a time. A few times, it kicked me from the download altogether and I had to re-connect. It was only this file. Everything else went smoothly.

Big B is Bytes, small b is bits. I doubt you are getting 65 megabytes/second over wireless, even 802.11n.
Sounds.pigg is the biggest single file in the game at 310 megabytes.
I take it you haven't/can't try a direct network cable connection.

This download is incredibly frustrating. I have been a subscriber since 2004, and I just bought a new tower. I needed to download the entire coh client, because my previous tower's motherboard melted down. Please understand that I bought my current tower with specs that would run UM very well. Unfortunatley, one file has brought me to a standstill on the download.
I am already pretty invested in this game. I am looking forward to playing it again. If I had to deal with all of this crap with fixing piggs as a new user, I would run like the wind. I am basically dealing with what a new user would experience upon downloading the game client for the first time, and it is terrible. There has got to be a better way to install CoH/V, especially given that most stores no longer carry the MA DVD expansion.
