Weekly Costume Contests from The American Legion

The Zombie invasion and the Mapserve of AP were not helpful. Once I began the contest, I went into announcment mode, so I personally was not monitoring local and broadcast heavily ( they are in separate tabs from my request channel). So if there was an issue with the person who won and I missed it, then I am sorry.
As a group we are pretty good about policing our events, and if someone was "trolling" it would have been mentioned, so he may have been annoying ( take in mind I don't know what he allegedly did or did not say or do), but was it disqualifying worthy?

As far as the winners go, that was the person with the most votes. I did not cast a vote as I was hosting and would only break a tie. The next person with the most votes was Lightkeeper.

Apparently people found his costume to fit the theme, or else they wouldn't have voted for him.

If people feel they should have done better, they should just enter again. The contests are so frequent that everyone has a chance to shine at some point.

Personally speaking, there's nothing wrong with a simple costume if it's effective.

You can't make everyone happy.
I've participated and won a few honourable mentions in these contests, but I watched this one from the background as I personally couldn't come up with a good absence of colour themed character (although someone mentioned a creepy black and white clown that they thought they should have made and I kicked myself for not thinking of something so very simple). I've always admired the professionalism of the Legion in how they handle the large contests and their willingness to dole out hundreds of millions twice a week, and I was extremely impressed when a few of them actually got right into the contest themselves and shifted into gray scale costumes. I liked how, despite being a black, white, and shades of gray contest, the Legion characters themselves each had a different take on which shades should go where, resulting in their usual matching uniforms all looking very, very unique. It was kinda cool

The zombie invasion sucked, and a couple of characters actually predicted it before the contest even started. It's nothing really new, as it's happened before with Rikti invasions, but it still sucked. The mapserve really sucked

I do have to disagree with you, Camille, as it was so blatantly obvious why people became upset. The Legion let someone continue for a good 20 to 30 minutes with his rant against another character for what was a common occurrence (he was nudged off the ledge, then he threatened to report people, loudly and repeatedly, for throwing snowballs), and only once did a member of the host group ask, "What's going on here?" As Matt's pointed out, that person was then rewarded handsomely with the top prize after he had told people to shut up and that they had no hope of winning.

Frankly, the excuse that "it fit the requirements of the contest" doesn't really cut it here. The requirement of being in black, white, and shades of gray was adhered to by almost everyone in attendance (although I'm pretty sure I saw one person in bright red and another with green armor...the instructions were so clear!) met those requirements. I was surprised at how many actually made a gray scale costume that worked conceptually. Personally, I wasn't impressed with the choice but I respect the right of the contest holders to make it. It did look, however, like the overall perception held by many in multiple channels that the Legion's judgment was questionable. The admission that channels weren't being watched and the player's conduct didn't factor in at all doesn't make matters much better.

I'm sorry to say that I found the entire night's events very unfortunate.

Honestly, I've given up trying to figure the reason some of the winners/honorable mentions are chosen over other, obviously better costumes. I just shrug my shoulders and wait until next time.

As one example, during the cowboys/cowgirls themed contest a female toon won an honorable mention even though she was not dressed as a cowgirl. The toon was wearing a modern looking top with detached sleeves, blue jeans, and a cowboy hat. She looked like she just stepped out of any country western bar on a Saturday night, after a night of boot scootin'. Her outfit had nothing to do with being a cowgirl other than the fact she was wearing the hat.

Sometimes you just have to say "whatever" and move on.

My apologies to the 'Legion for starting anything in this thread with my comments. I should have used better judgement and kept them to myself.

Hopefully you all have thicker skin/armor/carapaces than I might have in your position.

For the first time since we began these contests last July; I was not able to attend last night's contest due to outages caused by the winter weather here. So I cannot comment on the behavior that may have occurred by the person who ultimately won the grand prize. What I can comment on is our method of choosing winners. Each member of the Legion participating as a judge reviews the contestants and then sends one vote to the host of the contest (usually me) to be recorded. When all votes are in; the contestant with the most votes is awarded the grand prize. If there is a tie; the contest host casts a tie breaking vote. Often times people disagree with our choices; but I believe our method of selecting winners is fair and consistent; and ultimately that is the only thing I am concerned with.

I would suggest in future events; if someone is exhibiting behavior that is detracting from the contest and you see no action being taken; simply send a tell to the contest host and ask if they have noticed the behavior. While I try to monitor all channels during the contests; it can be difficult to catch everything. I will not Monday Morning quarterback last night's event but instead would like to thank all of you who participated and would like to publicly thank the members of The American Legion that come out twice a week; every week; to judge these contests despite the often times harsh and unfair criticism that is heaped upon them.

That being said...this thread is meant to be a fun thread for themes and winners of contests...so let's get back to it. The next contest is this Thursday at 10 PM EST and the next themed contest is next Tuesday at 10 PM EST. The contest will be Sports Themed.

When I hear Cosmic I think of Power Cosmic types like the Heralds of Galactus. Are those type of designs fitting for the theme next week? I realize they usually fall into Alien or Human categories of course but just making sure!

If it fits the theme of outer space it should fit the category.

Metal isn't the fifth in the fire-water-air-earth combination. (It varies, but is most commonly called aether.)

There is the wu xing, though. Chinese, I think. Fire, earth, water, metal and wood.

ahh that's what I was thinking....Aether.

OH.

yeah, Energy/spirit/whateveritwantstobecalled.

>_> I think I'll make an air costume...because I know fire will be the most commonly done for this CC
