When typing messages, "A" becomes delete

When I am typing messages to people or writing in MA, sometimes my "A" button just starts to delete everything typed before it. The only way I have fixed it so far has been to completely shut down the game and restart. Does anyone know any other way to fix it?

Does this occur outside of the game on occasion as well?

Does restarting the game make it go away completely until the next time you start the game up? next time you load MA? send a tell? does it ONLY happen when you're playing CoX?

having never experienced or heard of this type of bug in the game (and no one else is experiencing it to my knowledge), I'd first guess that it's being caused by something on your computer, either something like a stuck backspace key... or a virus/malware. Though somewhat hard to make an educated guess without more info. perhaps update anti-virus definitions and run a scan to see if it catches anything and then go from there.

My first thought was that it was being caused by your keyboard... but I can't say I have heard of keys that far away from one another getting their wires crossed like that.

Might as well post a CoH Helper and HiJack This log, although in this case I think it's far more likely the HiJack This log would reveal the cause (not to say that's good odds... just I somewhat doubt it's a driver related issue).

Something I'm curious about... when it starts behaving like this, what does using 'A' in-world (i.e. to activate a bind) do? Does it activate whatever is bound to 'A' (defaults to strafe left) normally, or does it not work correctly?

I have had this problem several times, in fact, had it this week. I think I've arrived at the work around, at least for my computer. No idea as to cure though.

In my case, it appears to be triggered when I minimize my active game window to work on something on the WinXP toolbar, such as changing the settings on my antivirus due to interference with the game, or opening an additional window to look up something on paragonwiki. When I return to the game, I'll have one or both of two problems. Either:

1. the "a" button erases all text typed previously on the line.
and/or
2. the UI power buttons stop working, meaning I can't attack or defend.
EDIT: correction, just remembered there is a 3rd problem that also might occur. If the UI power buttons stop working, I have on occasion found that I cannot type anything in the text line, making it very frustating to communicate to my team that my controls are not working properly.

I found that minimizing the game window again, and then re-maximizing it without working on anything else, seems to clear up the problem. I do recall one time where I had to do this twice before it took effect, so it may require patience and multiple tries.

Your Control button is "stuck"!

When you press A, it is probably activating Control-A (Select All) and deleting the line.

I've seen this type of complaint several times after switching applications, but usually with the Alt key. When this happens, try pressing the number keys to activate powers and see if it's activating an alternate tray's powers instead of the base tray. That would indicate the button is "stuck".

Usually to free a key, press it a couple times to refresh the "buttonUp" status in the game.

Or maybe that's not even it, but it sounds good. haha

@Thirty-seven- No. Never have this problem outside the game and I type a lot of stuff on my comp.

@Mystic-cross- Restarting the game completely fixes the problem. (Meaning quit to desktop) It works normally in game world. Just when I try to send a tell or type MA text.

@Rodoan- Maybe. I do minimize my screen to check on stuff in forums or otherwise. However, i remember once or twice it Just happening. Like in mid mission with a team. Will try your workaround next time though.

Just click both mouse button at the same time. It happens to me on occasion also.

As for the "a" deleting message it does sound like a stuck ctrl key.

Your comment stirred the dusty cobwebs of my memories. I think I may have also had this problem once or twice when zoning on a team. I can't be sure, its happened so often this last year. I've learned to deal with it, though, after reading this thread, I took a can of compressed air to my keyboard. Didn't get much, but will watch it more closely.

Wow, after several years of having and bugging the keyboard problems, finally to have someone else speak up!

While technically, it is a stuck control key... This issue has followed me across three different keyboards across two different brands. It also happens ONLY in CoX. I am a heavy gamer, and the only game that ever triggers any keyboard issues is CoX.

IOW, it isn't your fault, and it isn't the keyboard.

The causes I have found:
running Window mode, click off of CoX and work with a different program (doesn't matter if it is already running or if you start it now). Worst seems to be a browser - chrome, FF, and IE8 seem to all do it more than any other application I have tried to run. I click in and out of Windows Media Player constantly while in game and rarely have the issue, but I pop a browser and there we go.

The fixes I have to use:
1. Left Click on your CoX window to bring focus back. Then left click again on an empty part of the CoX window (dead center works ).
2. If that doesn't work, Left Click to bring back focus, then right click in an empty spot on your CoX screen.
3. If that doesn't work, left click to focus CoX, then hit your LEFT control button.

One of these three things always fixes the issue for me.

Sorry I should ave been more specific. In my case pressing both button fix the issue since the game thinks both my button are pressed. so pressing them again, "unlocks" them.

It also happened that I would start turning in one direction constantly, pressing the key to turn in that other direction would make me stop spinning but releasing said key would make me start spinning again. By pressing the key to turn in the same direction the game "unlock" itself.

So in short, find the key or combination of key that are "locked" and press it again. If you are moving forward try both button or the forward key.

It might sound counter-intuitive since you want to stop moving forward so why would you press the forward key???.. but it seems to work.

I wasn't referring to the key being physically stuck with dust or grime. I meant when the system or application thinks a key is still being pressed when it really isn't. This can happen even on the cleanest and newest of keyboards. It's more of a programming thing.

That's because every time you press a key, there are actually 2 commands sent to the computer. The first command is a key_down to say that you are pressing the key, the second is a key_up to tell it that you released it. This is why it's very common for the alt key to "stick" for many people.

When you alt+tab to another application, the game knows you are holding down alt, but once you hit tab, the operating system is taking over focus, and the game might not realize you released the alt key. That means once you switch back to the game, every button you press is actually Alt+key instead, until you press alt again to re-send the key_up command and "unlock" it, as you put it.

Similar things can happen with any key. Any number of reasons can make the game not receive the key_up command, like sometimes if it is being held down while a screen is being switched or loaded. That can "lock" it into a pressed state, and you'll have to press and release the same key again to reset it.
