farming on the cheap? (no Shield or FA)

All,

I know that due to AAO, Shield is perhaps the best farming character, but I don't really enjoy the set much. Same for Fire Armor. So, I'm looking to avoid those.

What would make for a good farming on the cheap type scrapper?

I prefer to have decent AOE, but I like to have decent single target damage since I swear that the code for mob placement in some maps has made them all scattered.

I was thinking that Fire/WP might be a pretty good choice, but I wish the secondary added to the damage. Maybe Fire/Electric? Energize and Power Sink could be pretty decent for being able to keep moving a bit.

Are there any good choices I'm overlooking? Again, I'd like to be able to relax and do it on the cheap (<200 mil on the build).

Thanks,

Lewis

You want cheap? Fire/SR. While SR doesn't do much for increasing your damage, it can be softcapped very cheaply (Heck, with the right power choices, you don't even need IOs to soft cap, though that can cost you in terms of endurance consumption). 20% global recharge can help with getting hard hitting AoEs up faster, as well, namely FSC, Fire's main source of AoE damage.

Here's an example of a decent farmer. Will you be faster than a purpled out Elec/Shield? Heck no! But you will be able to farm at a steady pace with no major endurance issues. And as you get more funds, other options open up to increase recharge and recovery (Namely things like Miracle/Numina and LotG, plus purples).

This is just for looking at, not meant to be a "how to level" guide. I just grabbed powers and tossed in slots as I went along to see what I could get out of it. From what I can see, the biggest ticket items are the Steadfast Res/Def and the Gaussian's set. Everything else should be fairly cheap to buy as you level up. It's always a good idea to look for IOs under max level, since you can often save 2-3 million or more per IO for the cost of a very minor reduction in performance. That's what I do, and I have no complaints.

If you want a farming toon, I'd suggest you to get a secondary with a taunt aura. It can really make a difference, and prevent some annoying scattering in certain situations. At least that's my experience. (Edit : those are /WP or /Inv, if we put /SD aside as you said you dont want it). However some people have reported very good performances with /Elec, /Fire or /Dark so that's maybe me being maniac with the "scattering" thing

Anyway I must say have much more fun farming on my Spine/Inv or even my recent DB/Inv toon, than on my overexpensive Elec/SD, even if the Elec/SD is obviously faster. So those two work better for me because when I have fun with my character, I dont get bored after half a run

So the secret is "find something with enough AoEs you have fun with !". Spines, Fire, Elec, DB, even Claws can deal some decent to really good AoE (Fireball or Energy Torrent in the ancillary pools help too). It's up to you which set you prefer.

For a secondary /WP is a good all around choice. Not expensive to build, and has good performances (unless you fight very hard hitting SL and def debuffing mobs like cimerorans). /Inv is really good too, but more expensive because those kinetic combats the set really needs to shine cost alot atm.

On the other hand, sets like /Elec, /Dark, /Fire without a taunt aura on a scrapper, have a damage aura that can be very handy too for AoE dmg.

Anyway as long as you dont go for tough farms (+3 or +4/x8 with some S/L hard hitting mobs), alot of combos will work pretty well here. It's up to you to give a few tests and see which one you prefer.

Good luck

Claws/Dark is a good option. Not as much AoE as spines but infinitely better st dmg and considering how thirsty dark is claws will also help with that too

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep thinking about my options. I do already have a level 50 soft-capped Fire/SR but to be honest, without a self-heal I'm a little worried that big spawns will eat him due to occasional lucky streaks. But, I never tried using him on a farm map. I might give it a shot.

If anyone else has suggestions, I'd like to hear them. If not, cool.

The biggest restraint on your damage output with a budget build is going to be endurance issues, and Willpower will be a huge help there. Go with Fire/WP, IMHO. WP is an extremely rugged power set on just SO's or common IO's, and Fire is a versatile power set that can really dish out the pain single target or AoE.

fire/sr is horrible imo. stuff starts to run around lack of taunt aura.

Depends what you wanna farm. Solo, without a lot of investment, I find that the 5th Column Overthrow is a very reliable arc to solo, and I imagine that Fire/WP would do excellently at that.

Spines/WP should do a reasonable job.

Oh don't worry about that. While farming you'll be getting insps like there's no tomorrow and will always have plenty of greens (and others) handy.

Given what you're looking for, Fire/WP sounds about right - good ST, good AoE, can hold its own in a farm with minimal investment and has an aggro aura (= no scatter). I say go for it.

Count me as another vote for fire/wp. It's painless and plenty dangerous, and as money rolls in can be developed into a MONSTER.

I know, becuz I got one, and it is sweet.

Sounds good. I'll give Fire/WP a go.

Another option for farming is an aura set (Dark, Elec, or Fire) coupled with Broad Sword or Katana. With Slice these sets have middle of the road AoE, but the damage aura coupled with Parry/DA's massive increase in survivability actually makes them pretty competent for farming.

The general issue I have with the aura sets outside Katana and Broadsword is I cant' get 8/+2 survivability out of them.

Also, unlike Spines or Electric, Katana has excellent single target damage and the ability to slot a -Resist proc so you won't want bang your head against the keyboard when taking down hard targets.

This.

Spines/Elec can also have the job done, not as safe as Spines/WP but sensibly faster.-

You're farming. Use inspirations. Fill up on greens and go!

Spine/WP is cheap, but boring. Spine/Elec seems to work well (having seen nightmarers) but its not as safe. I love my Spine/Inv but its not exactly a cheap build. Spine/SR could be softcapped cheap, but might not be perfect as a few unlucky hits would be very bad for you.

I believe spines is the way to go, depends what you want in a secondary and how much attention you are willing to pay. Spine/Elec does look fun

Would this work or be dumb and redundant:

Dark/Electric

You have two self heals, two end recoveries, AoE and a damage aura...

For some reason, though I've though about this powerset quite a bit, I haven't gotten around to making one. I'm not sure I want to.

[edit - ah you already know about his as you have one at level 31, from another post of yours]

I find my Fire/WP pretty much average at everything and not really excelling at anything. WP doesn't really do anything nice too boost fire like SD does, and Fire doesn't have any status effects or other mitigation to boost WP

I'm not saying its a bad combo, its two strong sets, just think both can gain more synergy elsewhere
